With the weekly DCL plays well for Everton... resulting every thread mentioning why did we sell him... etc etc

It got me thinking... bearing in mind we've not really wanted to sell the lot we've lost over recent years (and regularly cry about) can you imagine if we sold someone we didn't think was good enough or needed to who then went on the be awesome?

Is it a sign of actually we don't do a bad job at assessing quality? Or more we either sign superstars or numpties?

Can only really think of two in recent years. Obvs Billy - but he's back now... and the other is probably Jamie Ward?

Probably add Leon Britton. No pressure to sell really, just a calculation that he wasn't good for us so worth getting rid. Clive Mendonca too?

Nosworthy had a good spell at Watford after the end of his disaster loan with us.

Mendez-Laing similarly played poorly for the most part when on loan and fans weren't unhappy when we chose not to sign either of them

It's rare we actually sign someone who then goes on to bigger and better things. It's been our youth players whove go on to 'better' themselves Walker, DCL, Naughton, Maguire, Jags etc.

Can't think of too many players in recent seasons who've made it to the top, who we actually signed. KMac, Murphy we bought by championship clubs but that was down to us lingering in LG 1 too long.

Signing players who are on the downward trend makes it easier to assess their abilities

There's only one way they're going.........downwards.

Britton was awful, truly didn't fit our style at anytime except for Adkins era and offered little. Thankfully we have a manager that doesn't carry players anymore

I could see wilder actually utilising Brittons attributes - rather than just putting him in midfield and lumping the ball over his head.

His ability in the ball would have made him perfect for the coutts role.

I'm not sure Britton was able to pass the ball more than 3 yards And forwards...

Traianos Dellas springs to mind. Didn't exactly pull up any trees at United, barring a wonder goal at Portsmouth.

Then went on to become a European Champion with Greece and play in the Champions league with Roma.
Yeah and speak to any Greek person and they speak fondly of him!

He'd fit in well in the current set up, as would Borbokis

That's something I'll never agree on. Not the sort of footballer I'd want at united. He's right in the Hammond category for me... but not quite Neil Collins

The fact Neil Collins lasted so long at United just reflects where we were as a club. And conversely for Britton - the fact we binned him so quickly showed the cluelessness that led to that era. His Premiership career would seem to back that up.

Hammond we can agree on....

(reyt player) :)

Couldn't agree more. Had no pride in wearing the shirt for us - simply went through the motions and looked to avoid responsibility at every available opportunity.

Little shithouse.

Agree 100 per cent. Never has so much praises been heaped on one player for doing so little. He's made a career out of making wall passes in his own half and this is for some reason seen as valuable.

Spot on. A poor man's Paul Thirwell and it doesn't get much worse than that.

Surely Diego Maradonna must get a mention.

Wasn't Harry Haslam going to sign him, but (as usual) we baulked at the price and signed Alex Sabella instead.

I wonder if Kazim-Richards would qualify. Was decent, but just the one goal (the screamer against Bolton), and think most of us would have been a bit surprised he went on to have 4 or 5 seasons of Champions League football and made the semi-final of Euro 2008.

Unless my memory fails me I'm fairly sure that for some reason Dellas played in midfield for us. Think his success came when he moved to the back - which given his size you'd have thought his obvious position.

Yes. The fee they wanted was deemed to be too high for such a young player, the idiots.

I think you're right. He played at centre-half for Greece in Euro 2004. Was one of their star performers too.
