As undoubtedly popular as this thread is,since the more recent subject matter is nothing to do with the Blades, is it time that it moved to "General Chat"?

This thread drifts around here and there but usually gets back to the Blades every now and then especially when somebody posts a picture from some obscure friendly in 1973 and Silent has to intervene to name all the players including the opposition.

51 ? out to Lodge moor was another great day out ,

It was, and still, is the 51. Oddly it is the oldest bus route in Sheffield (and not the 51st oldest), and they have two buses running the route in the old Sheffield Corporation and SYT liveries. Both look strrets better than the dreary First Bus grey/purple.

To even think of of going on the West Terrace back then would be disrespectful
To trespass would be suicide.

When you could get into the triangle at the JST as close to the away fans without being in them , they where in the main terrace ,
the lads saw what was happening ( after they scored ) and well , you can guess the rest .

We used to be able to get it on the Arbour , close to the top pond ,
in the summer holidays we used to camp out there for about a week , swimming in the river , climbing up the rocks for Jackdaw eggs , then into the farmers fields up top .
All for tuppence ,
Later on we used to catch it up to Herdings ( back then ) for the youth club .
Ahh innocent but t fucking great times , with less pressure on us young uns then .

Not really very central though is it? I do like Endcliffe Park and have spent many a happy hour in there when the kids were young especially. Doing that walk, or cycle, through the park up to Forge Dam and back. I agree with your comments about anglers. They are best left to fish in places where you don't have significant numbers of walkers, joggers, cyclists passing by. Let them go out to some huge pond in the middle of nowhere, where they can be in total silence and stare into space for hours on end.

By 'Central', I wasn't meaning the location - that would be the Peace Gardens (too open-plan and prone to the druggies, winos and beggars who blight every town centre). I was referring to Endcliffe's ambience. Surrounded by fairly built-up environment with a low hum of traffic noise yet many opportunities to find a sun-dappled retreat where you can lose yourself for a bit. Like this:

On a separate note and the same area, I think the 'tree-huggers' who are objecting to Amey cutting down 'healthy' trees are talking bollocks. While nobody should applaud cutting down ancient trees, the ones on Rustlings Road (much like those on Sandygate Road) were planted eons ago when these roads were no more than cart tracks. Now they're busy roads and the roots are destroying the pavements. Get rid and plant more suitable trees.

In 2013, they 'celebrated' 100 years of the 51 route. It used to be horse-drawn and couldn't get up Manchester Road until motor buses were introduced. Even today, they still retain that old tradition. The timetable is the same as it was in 1913.

The brand was Sta-Prest. Such things were crucially important to a young lad in those days, signifying as it did razor sharp creases that would lacerate your finger. Sta Press might have been the Woolworth equivalent, as part of their Winfield range, no self-respecting mod would have given them house room.

Not really, it would be a massive job and would disturb the wildlife. They 'de-silted' Forge Dam years ago and it eventually returned 'back to nature'. I've often wondered how deep the leaf litter is at the bottom of these various lakes - I certainly wouldn't jump in to help someone in distress.

Can't say I'd want to see anglers in Encs. anyway. The hooks, shot, discarded lines and general sadness of anglers would be a danger to the ducks and spoil the incredible tranquil nature of Sheffield's 'Central Park'.

Deffo Top Drum, my dad and uncles local when they lived in Hampton Street (now Manor Oaks Road,).
Remember visits to my grandma's when I was a little kid, Skye Edge looked like Mount Everest to little me.
Our family (according to census records) migrated to the Park in or around 1841 and up to 1976 when my uncle died living on Norwich Row, Parkhill Flats.

Are you sure she didn't mean the number 2 that went down Coldwell Lane and was the 'outer circular'?

Wherever you were in Sheffield you'd see a 2 even on cul de sacs, in Meadowhall, in the market etc. A mate reckons that on drivers birthday's, SYT would give them a number 2 and tell them to drive where they want.
