City played at Maine Road, a corner of the ground was full of coppers watching the game, while outside you knew your car would be broken into. I'm trying not to be confrontational here, as feelings on this thread are running high, but I have long been convinced that a lot of trouble at football matches is instigated by the police - either by poor planning or allocation of manpower, or by deliberately 'steering' rival fans towards each other in order to justify their (over) presence at future matches. They use chavs like the 'spitting moron' as useful idiots. Don't believe me? Witness the trouble that will occur on Bramall Lane after the Barnsley match on Saturday. Utterly predictable, but it won't stop the cops letting the away fans straight out at FT to 'mingle' with female, family and children United supporters.

Their mates from 'Durham Constabulary' will be parked up in side streets waiting for the inevitable call to come and crack a few random heads. Job done. Overtime earned.

Appalling journalism. Let's report from outside Bramall Lane, is that just in case there are some hooligans hanging around? Just pointless. They just keep repeating the same details that were reported on the BBC on Saturday night, they've done no investigating, not even reported what injuries the policeman suffered and at who's hands or what injuries these children, "some as young as ten"suffered or who reported it in the first place.
I'm not condoning what went on but let's have some better reporting to find out just who is to blame or its just hearsay. The reporter at the match which they keep playing states that the Boro fans were running at the Blades, which implies that we didn't start it so why just blame us.
I know we have our share of idiots and they might be to blame but we seem to be taking all the blame which will not be the case.
Personally I didn't actually see any of this and I was sitting on a coach in the coach park and if things were as bad as they are reporting I'm sure someone would have said something or I would have witnessed it for myself.
I'd like to hear how this has been reported on Radio Teeside as a comparison.

Heard a report by RS this morning,saying brick and bottles were thrown,can i ask Middlesboro FC what said objects are doing laying around with 25 yards of the stadium,spend some of the millions that they have on tarmacing the coach/carpark might be an idea,so there is no ruble available to be thrown.

Worst violence seen at Boro in 25 years ? give over letting 500 boro fans hang about near the away coaches was enough to justify the Cleveland police overtime. Looks like Cleveland police allowed a situation to develop but now want S.Yorks police to sweep up the rubbish I don't quite understand how this is only United fans at fault.

TP didn't write programme notes until 1973-74 season ."Pritchett's piece" was the title of his regular column. Peter Howard wrote programme notes (Peter's Points) from 1970-71 to 1972-73 although he was our reporter in the late 1960s
