Blackman 6/10 Could've done better on the goal but let's be right, even experienced goalkeepers don't have to deal with that level of incompetence in front of them

Freeman 3/10. Been poor in both games so far

Basham 2/10. Attitude was fine but Christ he looked embarrassingly out of his depth yesterday. Weak, poor reading of the game and and made countless mistakes on the ball.

He was an absolute joke on the goal.

Big difference from last week, he's not playing a team of midgets who are great in possession but mediocre at best in and around the box. This week he was up against three strong and powerful forwards who know what they're doing.

Stearman. 5.5/10. Wasn't poor but he was brought in to give our back line calmness and experience. Didn't seem that way yesterday.

J'OC. 7/10. Did fine, one of our biggest assets although first half he didn't drive forward like he usually does, this was in the period when we were rattled by the goal and the confidence seem to drain from the team.

Stevens. 4.5/10. Didn't try and take his man on once and made some unforced errors, was disappointing yesterday. To be fair to him he's come up against Jota and then Cyrus Christie in his first two games.

Fleck. 5/10. Not his best although I wouldn't say he was poor either. The game revolved around the fact that all boro had to do was pump the ball up between our goalkeeper and centre backs and we were in a world of trouble against their 3 excellent forwards. Nightmare to play in midfield against.

Coutts 7/10. Did well on the ball and would've been an 8 if it wasn't for the times when he was ambling back rather than sprinting. Showed his lack of stamina at times

Carruthers. 5/10. Thought he wasn't as bad as a lot of people made out. He had little to work with and looked like he could cause boro problems in the first half but things just didn't quite come off for him.

The less said about whatever that ball/shot was before he went off the better.

Sharp. 4/10. Back to the Blackwell days which also wasn't his fault. He's small and slow, therefore doesn't suit the role of living off scraps for a team that just doesn't have any serious control on the game.

Would've liked to see him finish the game in a three around the box with Clarke and Ched.

Clarke 6.5/10. Did fine, especially considering what he had to work with.

Subs:

Duffy: Looked alright when he first came on but made some unforced errors as well. Great ball for the 'goal' and wasn't far off with his long range volley.

Brookes: Won a free kick and showed his quality in flashes as well as his inexperience. Big talent obviously.

Evans: Did alright, shame we still haven't seen him partner Billy

Didn't catch the game, but this Basham hate seems very over the top

Loads on social media calling him a joke, apparently the entire last season, and last game in fact, is out the window due to one bad performance ...

Any of the more levelheaded amongst us care to shed some light on how he actually played - in context of those around him too

Better, but still a bit harsh. Would you have given these ratings if the own goal had stood at the end? Or if we'd been given a penalty for the shirt pull, which was then put away? Or both? Because both of those were down to officials - we could have won 2-1 without playing one iota better. Would you still have given these ratings with that result?

He made one bad header that led to the goal. When Boro were on top first half, the whole defence lost shape for a short time, not just Basham.

5.5/10 for him given his decisive error and ordinary game, but he didn't have a true nightmare.

Yes, they'd at least be very similar.

What would your ratings be? I really don't see where they could be considerably increased from what I've given.

About the same except overall one point higher each. Except Blackman probably 2 higher. Sharp and Evans very difficult to judge due to the lack of opportunities to do anything, though I liked the way Clarke came back to collect occasionally when he wasn't getting any service.

Cheers

Feel for the guy because he always seems to be the scapegoat

But that's another reason I love him cause despite that, he always gives us 100%

I reckon we'll get a result against Cardiff following this anyway

It's funny how people see things so differently. Apart from a few dodgy passes, I thought Basham did ok. Their goal was one of those things, on another day the keeper would have carried on coming and punched it clear or even caught it, and so I'm not sure how Blackman gets 6/10 based on the low scoring when he didn't really have a shot to save appart from that. I didn't think Freeman was that bad either even though I'm not one of his biggest fans.

I'd mark Clarke down a bit because he had a couple of chances but dithered for the first one, and after he slipped for the second chance he also had the opportunity to pass to Evans who was unmarked in the box but just hammered it straight to the keeper on the near post.

Mine would be:

Blackman - 7 - Thought he was unlucky with the goal. Got caught out a bit but not expecting that header. Looked commanding and solid to me.
Freeman - 4.5 Our worst player. Slow. Got caught out several times. Made to look a bit daft by their players.
Basham - 6 - Grew into the game, but a bit panicky and out of position at times. Tried to drive us forward.
Stearman - 6.5 - Lost the battle but managed to hold the defence together in the second half.
O'Connell - 6.5 - Looked a bit off the pace but right place at the right time.
Stevens - 6 - Frustrating game for him. Outfoxed by more experience and cleverer players
Coutts - 6.5 - Thought he was slow and didn't offer himself enough first half. Gradually improved
Fleck - 6 - Off the pace first half. very gradually improved but lacking concentration
Carruthers - 5.5 - Looked like a headless chicken at times. We were pushing up 3 on 3 when they had the ball at the back first half which was borderline suicidal. He was often ahead of the strikes. Not helping midfield out enough.
Clarke - 5.5 - Looked his age and slightly out of his depth today. Had scraps to fight over but not much fight. Not making himself an outlet enough
Sharp - 4.5 - Almost totally anonymous. When we needed an outlet, he wasn't even running into space. Didn't look himself at all.

Duffy - 6.5 - Gave the ball away too much but buzzed around and got us upfield and playing to our strengths.
Evans - 5.5 - At least caused their defenders a slight bit of trouble but looked like he hadn't played football for a while. A bit headless chicken.
Brooks - 6 - Not much time to work with but not really on the ball when he came on. Looked to at least ask them a few questions

Wilder 6.5 - He was outsmarted and out-thought first half. Credit where it'd due, I was dreading the second half but he managed to make it respectable. Subs should have possibly been made earlier.

Apart from Basham most of my ratings are the same as everyone else's.

He was as bad as he was good in the first game. Yesterday he was absolutely shocking and his mistake on the goal was appalling.

Doesn't mean I'm screaming for him to be dropped, but I forget everything about last season and least week when it comes to giving a fair assessment of what he turned out yesterday. He was utter shit.

Blackman 6
Freeman 6...Did his best, but beaten up by the giant Friend, but did create the chance first half for Clarke.
Bash 5.5..Found it tough to handle another giant in Gistede.
Stearman 7..did ok.
JOC...6.5
Enda..5.
Courts 7..got better as game went on.
Fleck 6.5..
Carruthers 6..started well, but got progressively worse and hauled off after shooting wide when we were in a good position.
Sharp 5..hardly got a kick, couldn't hold the ball, lacked pace to trouble then in behind.
Clarke 6...looked a great chance if he had hit it first time when set up by Freeman but took to long..battled away, should have squared the chance late on.
Subs: Ched 6; Duffy 6;Brooks 6
Thought we were ok until the goal..improved 2nd half but couldn't break them down or get behind them...Room for improvement, but we battled well.
Boro were a big strong outfit, but another day we could have got a result.

Blackman - 6 didn't have anything to do apart from catch a few and wasn't great for the goal.

Freeman - 3 he seemed scared to go forward against Friend as was getting destroyed and didn't really help defensively.

Basham - 6 did well I thought against a very physical Gestede. Was good apart from the goal.

Stearman - 6 was just standard.

JoC - 7 was standard against Assombalonga which is hard enough and warrants a 7 for me.

Stevens - 5 wasn't his best game and played against an excellent Christie.

Fleck and Coutts - 6 tried to get on ball but both wasn't fantastic and would have wanted to have done more.

Carruthers - 4 really struggled to find space.

Sharp - 3 contributed absolutely nothing.

Clarke - 6 was just fairly average won a few headers and worked very very hard. But lacked any quality and had a few half chances that he didn't do anything with.

Blackman 5- didn't really have much to do, but the occasion he did, he cost us a goal.
Stearman 5- not convinced by him at all, is he really any better than jake wright?
Basham 5-thought he did alright, however didn't deal with the goal.
JOC 6- same as Bash did alright, should've had a goal aswell
Freeman 5-had an off game, didn't get forward enough and was poor defensively.
Stevens 4-thought he had a shocker, poor defensively and then gave ball away near enough every time he got it.
Fleck 5- poor game, defensively was non existent
Coutts 6- same as fleck defensively, however did show some quality on ball.
Carruthers 6- started well in first 15 pressuring their defence but then faded after that.
Sharp 4-may aswell have been sat with me. Didn't do enough to get the ball.
Clarke 5-did slightly more running than sharp.

Ched 6- tried to make an impact when came on but snatched at his chances.
Duffy 4- gave ball away constantly.
Brooks 5- had a shot, didn't really touch ball otherwise

Can't believe people are blaming Blackman for the goal

I can't believe you can't believe it.

Some of the criticism and reviews on here are so harsh! We were playing a team recently relegated from the Prem with bags of money. I took great encouragement from the game, thought we held our own against a team that is tipped to finish in the top 2. I think we really could do with some pace so we can catch teams on the break in games like that but lets not forget where we've come form. Boro have some very very good players and our guys gave them a good game second half. Realistic expectation for us should be to finish as high in the bottom half of the division as we can and then try to kick on season by season. No harm in being ambitious but lets not slate the players which did so well for us last year and really dug in yesterday

agree .. especially about stearman.. the header bash missed was right down the centre ie stearman is the central cb
