Did he finally admit, and was honest enough to say he has got this whole Hanson thing badly wrong ?

Whoefully inadequate once again. It's now gone beyond not being a positive influence on the side. His very presence on the field is in fact detrimental. When he is directly involved in play, our offensive build up play breaks down around 80%-90% of the time.

And I'll now go on record, having now seen more than enough to make the call, to say Lavery won't cut the mustard for us either.

All others more than adequate.
Slight ? On Lundstrum.
Duffy MOM.
Please for Ched.

If it's not Hanson with you, it's Clarke. FFS man give it a rest or visit a psychiatrist. This phobia is gonna poison you! TF we won? Christ knows what this board would have been like if we'd have lost!

I want all our players to do well, I really do, but Lavery and Hanson aren't good enough for the Championship. Carnt really say anything about the new players yet because its too soon, but put it this way, Coutts has Nothing to worry about for the distant future!
If Lavery and Hanson are to compete for Coutts' spot then I agree, he won't have to worry too much. :)

Lavery will be useful coming of the bench this season, he's got that bit of pace up top that we're lacking.

As for Hanson, yes Championship is probably beyond his level. But I guarantee you there will be times this season when we're all over teams, needing to get a goal, but just unable to break them down. Going into the last 5 minutes when things start to get desperate, I can't think of many better guys to bring on for the long balls, corners & free kicks.

I'd rather chuck O'Connell up front, he'd do just as good a job and more likely to score than Hanson.

Fleetwood showed that we had a big big weakness, just sit back defending deep in numbers with occasional fast breaks and we would struggle to score. We did the same against `Shrewsbury and Bury at home.

We lacked any kind of physicality up front and used EEL as a make shift striker.
Surprisingly the lump it up to EEL tactic worked well.

Our promotion push was in danger of floundering, teams had found our weakness.
So master tactician brings in Hanson and then our weakness had gone.

In the early stages EEL played a massive factor is getting us promoted
And in the latter part Hanson played a massive part because teams were no longer able to park the bus and defend in numbers.

Agree though at Championship level I doubt that the situation will arise much when tactically we need Hanson.

At least Ched looked impressive tonight and it looks like he's still got it.

Spot on mate. How do some not get this?

It's the black and white world that seems so fashionable these days.

All opinions need to be extreme in order to make a point.
So when we win "we were brilliant" and when we lose "we were absolutely hopeless".

Same with players, many are so keen to put them in either the "great player" box or the "terrible player" box.

But in reality there are nuances and shades of grey.
You have to understand how each player interacts and provides value to the team.
It's not as simple as he's a good place or he's a bad player.

Explain consistent play break down of 80%-90% when said player is directly involved in a positive way then for me ?

What am I missing 10%-20% of the time ?

The ball comes straight back at us !

Please do bear in mind I study football and footballers meticulously and look for good and bad in everyone. There is precisely nothing good about James Hanson. Sorry if this offends a few, but the facts are there, you just have to open your eyes !

5th / 6th choice striker, injury prone, adds nothing to the team (in fact is a detriment). John Terry must be shitting himself :)

This view that Hanson single handedly changed our system and season is as baffling as it is laughable.

That we were floundering and he changed us from being weak to being strong. Our "weakness had gone".

We walzed the league. We walzed it pre Hanson and we walzed it post Hanson. His personal impact through ALL of this was limited. Extremely limited.

EEL was used up top for last 5 mins or so on occasion when time was running out. Did the manager see fit to put him up there for longer to provide this vital physical presence you speak of ?

No he didn't.

I won't pull any punches here. Your view (and others) a physical target man is an essential ingredient for success across any level (PL to L2) of English football is as antiquated as it is wrong. To compound matters, when your own sides target man can't control a football, can't pass a football, has a 50 p head all of which leads to possession turnover of 80%+, then it becomes extremely difficult to make a case for either the tactic employed or the player himself.

Hoof n hope no longer has a place. Did you (and others) not get that memo ?

It probably won't happen and I get what you're saying regards Hanson but if you study players that well then John Terry won't relish any match up against James Hanson.

There are still a lot of goals from set pieces in the Championship after watching the first week and Hanson will have some role to play defensively as well as attacking no matter how poor you think he is.

I'd have rather we had Chris O Grady if truth be told or even put a cheeky bid in for Matt Smith at QPR for the role Hanson will play, they can both play on the floor.

Interesting.

I'll check for any sweat on JTs shirt after the Villa game.

Might take a while !

I'd rather have Gallagher, same size but different player. I am ambitious too :)

12 months in and your only just realising how good he is?

Considering some of his brain-fart tactical mistakes (Fleetwood at home!!!) in the early part of last season, my worry was that he wouldn't learn from them.

Boy has he proved me wrong!!! He is the real deal!!

From September onwards I think Fleetwood at home at the end of Jan was the only time he got it wrong, when he dropped Lavs after a tif and played McNulty.(I think, bad memory and lack of sleep means I could be wrong)

Started McNulty and then shifted to 4-4-2 at half time... Two complete clangers.

However, since then, he's been imperious and unquestionable in his actions. If he can integrate Chedwyn and Brayford into the team/squad then he really is a master!!

Which might be useful if someone could actually manage to get his feet off the ground.

Actually loses height when he "jumps" for the ball. Baffling !!

Your anti-Hanson agenda is clouding your already dubious judgement. Have an opinion by all means but try to be a little more objective.

You are now making yourself look silly.

Hanson was useful last year, but giving him a long contract was very short sighted. He was never going to be good enough for the championship, he's nowhere near the required standard.

As for Lavery, jury is still out but he needs to sharpen up, his finishing and composure infront of goal are poor. He's learning from Billy and Leon who are two of the best finishers I've seen at the Lane and both brilliant under pressure, Lavery just doesn't seem to have that natural touch. He's useful to bring off the bench but I can't see him scoring many against Championship opposition at all.

In truth, when Leon and Billy are our automatic first choice pair in the Championship you've kinda got to admit we need another striker. No offence to the two, I love them both, but we really need to sign a championship standard striker this window.

11 changes tonight to keep the first XI fresh. Wasn't quite working, made the adjustment and won the game.

In Tufty I well and truly trust!!!

First United Manager I trust 100% - even in the good days under both Warnock and Dave, sometimes you would think what the fuck, but so far Wilder as me not questioning anything always seems to know the right moves and good to know when its not right and move on, like with Hussey, really think with Chris Wilder we will go places and finally we have a team and a club we can be wholly proud of and feel very much part of.

he's been at the Peroni again

What most don't understand about Hanson is that he's just the new boo-boy. Don't forget this is SUFC, someone has to cop it, better players than him have in the past if that's any consolation. It only takes one to start it and the mob willingly tag along.

Get off your high horse, you're talking like you're the only one who's ever watched a game of football. Before you start lecturing us all on how the game should be played just be aware that we already know that hoofball is outdated and ineffective. That's why hardly any teams play hoof anymore (Bolton aside). Nobody is extolling the virtues of hit and hope, we know it is limited and to be used as an absolute last resort. The opinion that Hanson could be useful as an option is not antiquated - it might offend you but target men can be effective at the right time.

Big men that can play football, can control a football, can pass a football, often wrongly referred to as "target men", you have a good and valid point.

James Hanson ................ ??????????

No high horse. No lecture. Something born in your own mind, and your own interpretation of what was said. Nothing more.
