There are things we can improve or upgrade on, but it's difficult to find genuine negatives from yesterday. And how many first games of the season has it been since we were able to say that ?? I'm tempted to offer this as a positive in itself ...

So many positives too, beyond just the performances of individual players. Here are ten of mine, in no particular order:

1) the genuine team ethos and spirit that brought us so much last year seems unaffected by the summer break. If anything, yesterday, we looked more resolute still.

2) the new outfield players seem to have settled really well, appear to understand exactly what we're about on the pitch--one sign of an effective pre-season--and so far look like like they give us a substantial upgrade defensively.

3) the new signings also make us bigger, collectively, than we were ? If they can get off the ground, Stearman, Stevens, Lundstram (and in the 95th minute when we need a goal, Jamal) should all increase our threat from corners and free-kicks, as well us making us more imposing defensively.

4) we are sticking with 3 at the back, which is a fantastic sign (hopefully) of optimistic, attacking football to come. Also interesting that Wilder stressed this positive approach as soon as the second paragraph of yesterday's programme notes. The extra body in midfield that 3-5-2 gives us may be part of what allows us to surprise a few teams, literally, this season. It will be interesting to see if this remains our default shape away from home. Hope so.

5) we weren't overrun in midfield, when it might have been a major weak spot for us. Teams that had a proper go at us through the middle last year, and there weren't many, occasionally had players running straight at our goal for 20-30 yards+ without meaningful challenge. It's been an issue for us for years. With the step-up in oppo quality this season, I was concerned how this might play out. Instead, Brentford often found themselves forced out wide yesterday, where they were dangerous enough: but we battled them effectively in the middle for most of the game. Coutts' seemingly constantly improving fitness, and Stevens' athleticism, may be big factors in this.

6) having to battle, which this Utd side isn't used to doing, didn't negate our ability to play. Quite the opposite. Despite the View from Bitter Brentford, as relayed to us by the weird-and-mighty Roygbiv, we did indeed knock the ball around effectively and pleasingly at times, and if yesterday is anything to go by we should have more than enough in the "proper football" locker to dispatch plenty teams in this division during the coming months.

7) one or two looked tired before the end, but that can happen at any point in the season and for the first game of the year (in warm sunshine) fitness levels look really good; another sign of an effective pre-season.

8) three points taken against a club on the up fielding accomplished Championship trickiness and talent.

9) a crowd that size, in the middle of the school holidays when plenty people are away, and with relatively poor away numbers, suggests we will "sell out" league games this season (albeit that "sold out" these days seems to mean "not really sold out at all").

10) was it just my summery, "1-0" mood, or did the much vaunted, new "fast pour" system actually get me a much quicker pint at the South concourse bar, kop end ?

And I didn't even mention that Preston won, or that one of the seriously smelly buggers who used to sit next to us seems to have moved. Hurray :)

Hard to disagree with any of that.

On pt.5, and I could be naive in saying this, I don't think we will have much harder afternoons (in the middle of the pitch) then we did yesterday. Upon reflection, Woods was the MOTM. Their entire midfield oozed quality with possession and the fact we matched them is very encouraging to me.

AND.... given the larger crowd I still managed to find my preferred parking spot.

10. The fast pour system is good. The fast brain system is pour (among one or two of the staff)

Sharp and Clarke were good.
Carruthers was excellant.
Fleck good.
Stevens excellant.
Back 3 super.
Blackman very good.
Lavery good.
Basham amazing. MOM

Fitness levels of a few second half questionable given Brentford had no drop off.
Would love us to sign Leonard.

Well Brentford couldn't drop off because they were losing. I have just rewatched the game and they had less of the game than I thought. We deserved to win. Over the ninety minutes we were the better side.

Don't disagree with any of that SBB apart from I can't comment on the freeflow system in the south stand because we are limited to small, expensive bottles of lager or cider in the Westfield corner. Very poor.

Seriously though re point 5. The only concern (and it's not a massive one) for me was the odd occasion that we seemed to struggle with their movement and speed of thought/passing when they attacked from midfield. It's something our defence and midfield will grow into, I have no doubt, but we did give up 2 or 3 chances as a result of this and better finishers might have punished us. This is just getting used to the higher standard but I have no doubt we'll get there.

That first day could have gone either way. We could have been battered at home which might have had us thinking that the gap between the divisions the swine would have had us believe was there, was real BUT I came out of the ground thinking that we have more than enough to to be OK this season. We will have some great days and probably some awful days, but I think we'll consolidate nicely and be able to build further to keep up this fantastic progress under the current management team.

I'm a very happy chap.

Yeah, I think that's absolutely right. I must admit I've been a bit bemused by posters suggesting we don't necessarily need more pace in the Champ, or that technique will usually trump athleticism. Having players with the pace and/or power to match their decent technique is, generally, one key way of differentiating between higher-level and lower-level teams, for me. Crudely, and allowing for exceptions, you need to be an athlete to play in the Prem whereas you don't in League 1. Brentford had more of that stuff than we did on Saturday, and I agree, the moments when they displayed it while attacking were the moments that had me gripping my seat and swearing more loudly than usual.

Got to say that, as I have commented on the movement and speed of thought of some of the Brentford Players it's only fair that I heep praise on one of our own. Hope this link works to ifollow (I'm crap at this stuff so if it doesn't copy and paste the URL). If it does, check out GoalCam and enjoy Billy's movement - sheer class for someone who won't be able to do it at this level.

It would be extremely harsh to point out negatives after that but there are definitely things for the team to work on.

I assume Chris will be replaying their post/ludicrous miss moment to the defence and midfield and enquiring as to where they all were. We definitely can't get away with backing off or losing runners in this league.

I thought Enda was a huge plus, especially given it was his debit and a two division step-up.

Saturday showed out starting 11 is a match for any team in the league. Yeah sometimes we will play like that and lose. But it shows our side is going to be competitive in this league and in our first season back that's all we can ask for.

My missus now offers to drop me off and pick me up from matches, as she knows "how bad the parking is"! Major positive for me!!

As this is a 'do, review and evaluate' session....

Does anyone have any negatives?

I'm going to say three....
1. Didn't get the second
2. Allowed them to play a little bit too much
3. Gave the ball away in the first half to much

Agreed. Was clear to me on the rewatch. Funny how we you take away the uncertainty about what the result will be it looks a bit different. Not hugely different, but different.

Yeah I came to the same conclusion. I came back from the game thinking we were under the kosh for the last 15 mins but it was more even when I watched it back

Biggest positive for me was that we proved we can more than compete at this level. Looking at the other games played over the weekend also showed we have nothing to fear..........bring em on!
