1. Grow a backbone
2. Say they are not for sale
3. If the club or agent persist, report them for tapping up.

You're welcome, Kevin.

Unfortunately that's the harsh reality.

We could offer Brooks £12K a week but a PL club can afford to laugh at that salary and offer him £20K a week.
He might rarely play another game of league football but some would class being a millionaire a success
Even if it means you're sat in the reserves all your career.

I would think Wilder is persuasive and able to keep talented lads grounded.
He'll talk about what's best for their development.
If a player is confident in their ability then development is more important than quick money.

I don't know who allows him to talk to the media, it never helps. Basically any premier league side will look at that and say they can pick him up cheap. What McCabe needs to say is that we will not sell cheap and we will fight to keep all young players

In answer to McCabe: I don't think anyone ever expects to keep every young player but protect ourselves better:
1) Give them a good, but realistic contract with a decent duration. Give them regular new contracts when they reach milestones and games targets.
2) Set his price exceptionally high, beyond a level which makes it "small change". 5-10 Million will do as a baseline, even if they're not currently worth that.
3) Put a sell on clause of 10% into any deal (which in fairness has been done for the past few years)

Its very easy to buy from United. We need to make that a little more difficult.

Does anyone know when Brooks contract ends?

Is your suggestion that we let his contract run down and let him leave for nothing?
But the question was " does anyone know how to keep talent"
The obvious answer is we need to be in the PL, then we can pay Brooks £25K a week.

Serious question for Kev - if a Prem team offer Brooks £20K a week, we would have to sell him ??

Look how much of a pain in the arse it has been for us (a side in a higher division) to sign Southend's Ryan Leonard and Charlton's Ricky Holmes.
We'd obviously up their wages significantly.

It's fucking easy to say 'no they aren't for sale' you buffoon.
I wish he'd fuck off with the 'you can't say no' bullshit - yes you fucking well can. Southend have with us. If that was us we'd have accepted the first offer.

We could just give him a deserved improved contract now.
Based on his performances for England and us in pre season his development deserves reward.
Bring him closer in line with the first team, make him feel valued.

i am assuming that McCabe is talking about the situation where the kid is under contract and you want to keep him.

There's a contradiction between points 1 and 2.
If the club set a valuation of 5 to 10 million then surely the agent will argue and produce figures proving he's worth £20K a week.

Are you suggesting we pay him £20K a week over 4 years?
That's 4.1 million, which seems a bargain if we believe he's a £10 million pound player.

One could argue paying Brooks £20K a week is a worthwhile investment but how would that make the other players feel? Will Fleck then demand £20K a week?

Exactly. All this 'we can't keep em if a big club comes calling' shit gets on my goat. Yes we know that is the case, most of us do live on planet Earth, but for once can we get to the second date before we drop our little spangly knickers and get royally humped by a higher division team. Tell any potential suitors that he's not available for any price shy of £10m. Let them cough up the money or go forth and multiply.

People might scoff at that figure but with the clear potential he has he could be a real player for us for half a decade and still be a relative pup. £10m in't a lot of money in the premier league these days. McCabe should hold his tongue or tell the media that he isn't for sale and if he was to go it would be for a fortune. A couple of million to a prem league team is pocket change.

I understand it's difficult to stand in a player's way if one of the big boys comes knocking, even if it would be better for their development to stay with us a bit longer. The one thing I can't get my head round is when we undervalue our talent.

Yes we mugged off a few teams with the likes of Jordan Slew, but if Ademola Lookman can be sold for £11 million, i'd expect nothing less than that for Brooks who if anything has been the more impressive player at least on the International stage. Sadly I think £3 million would be pushing it which is peanuts in today's market.

Agree 100%. The starting point should be a fee like Charlton got.

Fair enough
Basically you want McCabe to follow the example of the Southend manager regards Leonard.
Agree we do tend to sell our players too easily.

Hopefully this will change now we're in the Championship because we can now afford to play hardball.

You can only say this when Leonard doesn't arrive and I'm confident he will!! We got good money for many young players who did not even feature for us, it's unfortunately how it works, the big fish pick on the smaller ones. How many wish we'd sold Long? Glad we sold Slew, Got good money (which was reinvested) for reserves Rammers and DCL. Sold a sulker in Adams. For me it is what we do with the proceeds not that we have sold young talent.

Easy solution Kevin.

Just appoint Ron Martin in some capacity and let him do everything for you. Or just ask him how he deals with it?

If we sell Brooks this window United can fuck right off. No excuse for it.

Exactly. The thing with Brooks too is he was part of an academy before at City and got thrown on the scrapheap when we picked him up.
I think he'll have a bit of loyalty towards us and maybe even wouldn't fancy the idea of going back into an elite academy/development team again after being burnt.

If we accept an offer though he hasn't got a choice. And we've set a precedent for ourselves.

Why does he talk to the media? Every time he does he puts his foot clean in his gob. He's got so many Partridgeisms - 'big dog' is a great one.

I would think his valuation is more than £3 million which is incredible for someone who's rarely played league football.
To be voted player of the under 19 Toulon international tournament is a very impressive award.
One could argue he's amongst the best young talents in world football.
Man City must be kicking themselves.
I understand their Academy let Brooks go because he was too small and weak
But it seems he's a late developer and luckily for us had a growth spurt.

I can, I said we'd have accepted the first offer.

DCL was a regular for Everton last year.
Ramsdale after a few games could be worth a shit tonne of money - Pickford has just gone for 30 mil.
Adams has just been subject of a rejected bid of 5mil from Fulham.

We always get fucked over in terms of young talent. All are worth more now than we sold them for last year. Anything above a million and we seem to consider it a good deal.

If we sold Brooks we'd sell him for miles under his worth cos we're behind the curve when it comes to the modern day market.

Exactly...... I appreciate what he's saying (though did he really need to say it? ..... again?) but can we at least make a club pay an inflated price based on potential? Last season was a great example. Everton pay us 1m for DCL when at around the same time Charlton squeeze 7m out of them for the lad Lookman. 7 times the value for just a handful of appearances more? This is the one area where Kev irritates me when he gives in far too easily at times. Just like other clubs know we have the Maguire/Walker money we all know the premier league is awash with cash. Premier league potential should start coming with a premier league price tag

Didn't take long did it.

We've just recieved £7mil in sell on fees alone.

Possibly more to come from Che Adams with a bid rejected from Fulham and rumoured Premier League interested.

If we let Brooks go I will be absolutely fucking livid. Whats the point in getting excited about our young talent? It never sees the light of day! If Ben Whiteman has another good season for Donny undoubtedly Burnley will be along with an offer of 12 pence a week and 'how can we stand in his way?'

It stinks to high heaven.
