It's clear that our U23 setup is pretty strong despite many of the players playing being u19s, they have proven they can mix it with teams containing first teamers (Beating the pigs is testament to this).

However what I find bizarre is the whole situation surrounding his loan. Did Wilder and the coaching staff not understand what a player we had? Did it take the Toulon tournament to convince them we had a potential first teamer on our hands? Surely they knew of his ability before this.

Makes you wonder, if he'd not been selected for England (and lets be honest, a player with zero first team appearances in the third tier of English football is lucky to even be considered), would he be in and around the first team?

Somehow, I think he'd still be at Chesterfield.

Really looking forward to watching Brookes and Sharpe at Bramhall Lane next season. Proud to be a Sheffield fan.;)
 
I don't think there's anything unusual or fortunate about it at all .

As me and mi owd mucker Pinchy have always maintained ...... if they're good enough they'll be in and around the first team REGARDLESS of their age .

Some slated CW for cancelling Brooksys loan move to Chesterfield .... why? CW has witnessed what Brooksy offers and knows his head right now is in the right place ..... sod bloody Chesterfield, GERRIMBACK , GERIMHERE , GEEHIMARUN .

Exactly the same will happen with Whiteman and anyone else for that matter .

Trust in Wilder and trust me an pinchy anall :)
 
What was wrong with posting this in the 19 Page Thread on him? Or could you not find it as you were looking for 'Brookes'?
 
Oh I agree and clearly he's shown that he is good enough to be around the first team....

But until the Toulon comp, it appeared that he wasn't.
 
So the question is 'didn't CW realise how good a player Brooks was until he started playing well?' No, probably not, why would he? Youth development is pretty much a guessing game. You just can't factor in a player going from a decent youth player to genuine prospect in a few months but it happens. You ask anyone who's played academy football about the kids that make it and eight out of ten times they'll tell you they weren't the best in their age group. It's only usually the outstanding ones that look good at youth level and take it into the pro game, players like Pogba.
 
Maybe it dawned on our manager that we were losing out on Holmes and maybe even Leonard too. His job is a moving feast until the Transfer Window closes.

I'd imagine that they knew full well the depth of his capability, but as always with youngsters he wanted him to get some experience and perhaps thought he wasn't quite ready, after all a youth tournament is not quite as competitive and physical as the Championship or League 1

So a local loan is the tried and trusted method for developing players to get first team action and be away from familiar surroundings, gives them chance to fend for themselves.

Brookes may yet go out on loan but it sounds like he has a chance to see what he has first.

I'm hoping he has a stormer in the next few games and renders the necessity for a Holmes like player unnecessary.
 



Think it's a fair question.

Doubt very much it's as simple as his performance in Toulon suddenly swinging it. Why would it? Plays well against other youngsters. We knew he was capable of that already.

That's what I'm trying to get at.

Maybe Brooks is simply the plan B if he couldn't get in Holmes (which does look dead now).

Could well be mate. Can't help but wonder if interest from elsewhere has also been a factor for some reason.

Wilder and Knill are far from daft. I doubt very much that his Toulon performances suddenly made them think again.

Right, got you.

I'd suggest the only way we're going to keep him is by giving him first team football. Otherwise, he may as well move to Everton and let them loan him out. CW is obviously prepared to do so whereas he didn't seem to think DCL was ready.

Saw DCL a few times and I haven't a clue what made Everton think he was ready. He looked totally out of his depth, but age buys you time.

I don't think they thought he was ready, one for the future but apparently he was on fire in the u23s so I guess that's why he got a chance. Looks a long way off. If anyone actually watched the u20s World Cup they'd have seen that, tactically, these kids were hopeless. They'd give a manager nightmares. Some of the decision making was genuinely shocking. Good to watch but they kept losing possession in really dangerous areas.

Yeah, the naivety shown in the second half of that final was unreal. Venezuela actually gave us a footballing lesson, however we had a potentially world class keeper between the sticks and he won it for us :-)

They were nearly as bad. Their forwards all thought they were Messi.
 



Hardly bizarre. The lad, despite his obvious ability, is young and slight in stature. Its perfectly reasonable for Wilder not to have included him in a team chasing promotion, or to be unsure as to whether he is up to the rigours of Championship football and might benefit from a year in league two instead.

He's had a great summer with England and interest from Prem clubs which has swayed Wilder into giving him 1st team action. That's his prerogative.
