Its begining to look like we have moved on , a full team of stars , over the last ten years or so . But if Spurs can not keep them who can .
Fair comment CBC, I guess every player has his price. I've got no real gripe with us selling Ramsdale, we were in L1, he wasn't getting in the side and a Premiership team came in that was probably offering much better wages. Can't really blame the lad for wanting to go or us for selling. My issue is the fee, £1m is nowhere near enough for somebody with his potential and is peanuts for Bournemouth, they are owned by a billionaire and receive millions from TV and sponsorship revenue. It was a poor deal in my opinion.

I think this kid might be the next huge star to graduate from our academy. A snip at the price they paid. He was in the last year of his deal, and only part of our system for a year or two, so we'd have received minimal compensation at a tribunal. Far less than the 800k plus add ons that was rumoured at the time. Lets hope we have a big sell on percentage.

Yeh it's a sad fact about money in football there's an elite within the elite when it comes to players wages

It's a food chain with Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top, and everyone else vulnerable to someone above them. I blame Jimmy Hill.

It would be nice to be a few places higher in the food chain though, above the likes of Bournemouth.

Yep. Totally.

When the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham can't hold on to players, you have to realise it's a dog eat dog world and our teeth aren't very sharp!

Did any of you guys saying we need more money read the article (with examples) about young player compensation?
http://fullcontactlaw.co.uk/2016/11/compensation-players-24-mystery/
Once out of contract you will be lucky if you got near a million quid compensation (and with Ramsdale's stats it would've been nowhere near), you can't force a new contract on anybody.
On top of this in the Q&A (2 years ago) McCabe goes into detail about who can stop young players leaving, many in the room didn't acknowledge this so I know not many people on this forum will either but the answer is 'nobody'. He uses Arsenal who have a cat 1 academy as an example, if Chelsea turn the head of one of their youth players he will be leaving.
It's on Youtube if anybody fancys listening (4 parts) here's a link to part 2 where he talks academy:

In the long run isn't it better to say we aren't selling unless it's a decent fee and accept losing on one or two players for long term gain?

I know it's easy for me to say when I'm not running the club and paying the bills, but it would be nice to not be seen as a soft touch.

At the moment clubs can just start at £750k and they know that £1m - £1.5m and they have their man. Clubs should be thinking that Sheffield United won't even talk to us unless we start at £3m+.

If we'd played hardball over Ramsdale, made him stay until the end of his deal and received paltry compensation, it would have been a case of McCabe not knowing what he was doing. Bloke can't win. Especially with all the football contract expertise on here.

YES Blade Wish this could be true too but having seen the 2 items I pointed out, I realised that the guys sorting out the transfer fees were probably doing the best anybody could. If we'd held onto Ramsdale until his contract expired I doubt we'd have had half a million quid for him, he hasn't made a first team appearance in the league. DCL had made a handful of appearances split between us and Northampton, so no big payout their either. Neither was really near the first team so all we were doing were running down their contracts until they could leave for a tribunal fee which would've been much less than what we did get. The tribunal fees don't reflect the value or work put into making a player but once again it's the hierarchy looking after their own and there's nothing anybody can do about it. The only players we can play hardball with are under contract, first team players and ultimately those sales haven't worked out too badly.

I don't think the club has done bad in recent years with academy player sales. Had lots of decent money for players that have supposed "potential." DCL, Slew, Jacob Mellis, Ramsdale. All over a million.

To me the these are great deals for players who by no means show anything ultra rear or special in the little I saw of them and not even close to first team players.

The last real stars I saw to come out of the academy were the Kyles and Maguire as soon as they came on you could see they were meant for better things. I thought if they improved all could play for there country, shame about Naughts. Maybe Lowton as a late bloomer but thought he'd grow with us.

Not seen there level of quality in a player breaking through in a long time and not in the recent crop. We seem too quick to jump on the "potential" band wagon a bit too quickly for me and lambast the club for low sell on fee' when these players aren't near the first team.

I know money has changed the game but I think the club is doing great so far. I've seen far too many Harriotts, Ironsides, Slews, Forte's, Mellis' come through all with big potential that never made it. The men's game is a big step up and some of the current crop may make it to the first team and better (hopefully) but most won't, unfortunately just the nature of the game.

The next Walker that comes along and gets sold for only £3m I'll join in calling the club out but for the the current lot meh, yep a mill sound right at the moment for them. P.s. for me at the moment. Think Brookes needs a loan or two and Whiteman seems to have the brightest future.

If the player wants to go you can't keep em

All you can do is get the best you can and the best offer is the best offer, regardless of what valuation it meets or doesn't meet

The key is making sure we stay in the championship and that we have a clear pathway to the first team. Then, we can do that. Firstly, we have to be a club where a player like Brooks knows that if he stays, he'll get some first team action. That will be an incentive for him to stay with us. He'll know that with a season or more of first team football under his belt he'd be going to a club who expects to play him in the first team, especially if he goes for big money. And he'll be aware that if he leaves for £1m he could end up in a PL club's u23s.

So, if our kids know they'll get first team football, some of them won't jump at the first offer but wait until they've got some first team experience and can command a much higher wage. That puts us in a position where we can get play hardball.

That's why I think we're playing Brooks in the friendlies; we're sending out a message to him and potential suitors that we consider him part of the first team squad and that if they want to buy him, we expect a serious bid. That might put clubs off a bit and might prevent him banging down KM's door wanting a move. So we can tell Eddie Howe that if he's not prepared to offer in excess of £5m, he can fuck off back to Bournemouth.

Of course you can keep 'em. The agents and lawyers on here say so.

There seems to be a refusal to accept the current footballing climate.

In League 1, you can't stop players moving on to clubs in higher leagues. Simple as that. If they're exceptional (Ali, Walcott etc) then you may get a big fee, but normally you'll get a lot less than their potential. But all it is at this stage is potential. Premiership clubs can afford to shell out £1-2 million on players with potential knowing that only a minority will make it. The others end up leaving on a free or a nominal amount.

You can't make players stay at clubs if bigger clubs come in offering much more money. There are very few examples of players who have been made to stay and the club seeing any benefit (in terms of performances or money) from it. Normally, they'll reduce their worth by handing in a transfer fee/not playing and forcing a sale under the value the club really wants.

Everton and Lukaku are a good example of how to do it. He wanted to leave in January. The club basically said we'll let you go for the right price in summer if you put your head down and give your all for us. Sure, he didn't quite perform up to the first half of the season, but he did perform. Player got the move he wanted. Club got the fee they wanted. Win/Win.

The trick is, as a club, to use these sales to improve the squad as a whole. Losing DCL and Ramsdale allowed us to bring in players who helped us get up. Sure, both may end up up as much better players, but we haven't got the ability, finances or stature to allow 2-3 years for this to come to fruition.

This is where having a good scouting network and Academy comes into play. It's what Southampton have done very nimbly. Selling at the right price and then being able to bring equally talented players through.

Fingers crossed, we finally have a chief scout and a network which will allow us to do this.

We don't do enough to keep them.

Ramsdale will play for England, he is he best U18 keeper, I have ever seen.
Was gutted he opted for moving to a club who don't average 12,000, for a few extra quid, and the Premiership badge.

We only pay the Academy lads £100-£150 a week, so we are asking for it I suppose, but just wish occasionally we would hang on to one or two.

Be nice when we overtake Bournemouth, if we could get him back.

Players like Ramsdale, with no connection to Utd as a kid, just use us a stepping stone, and are off the first chance they get, McCabe despite saying he wants more Academy lads in the first team, is more than happy to sell them, as it funds the whole thing.

What tactics do you think we should use to stop em wanting to increase their wages by tenfold or more?

Just like Long was going to play for England, where do you get your£100-£150 a week figures from? It's a no brainer for any player, if he can increase his wages tenfold then he will do.

Some decent points be made. I'm not naive enough to think we can stop young players leaving when premiership teams comes in offering huge wages. I also accept McCabe is a successful developer with the club's best interests at heart and has experience negotiating complicated deals. However, recent history shows when the bidding gets to a million there seems to be a tendency for us to throw our hands up in defeat. Sunderland are a financial basket case and they have just received £30m for Pickford after one decent season even though doubts still exist whether he has the ability to play at the highest level. Yes, I accept Ramsdale had not even started a league game but I don't think £1m is a fair reward for a player with his potential. As someone said, we won on the Slew and Mellis deals but I'd counter that by saying Hull and Tottenham well and truly had our pants down on the Maguire and Walker transfers.

Not everyone will agree with me but I would have preferred to take a tougher stance by rejecting anything under £2m and risk him going to a tribunal when his contract expires. He would have been on the bench for us next season and would probably have featured in the cup games. He may even have stayed if he could see a route into the first team. Bournemouth would have been left with a decision, pay a higher fee or risk losing him as there is no guarantee Ramsdale would want to join them next year. All about opinions I guess, at the moment I think teams see us a soft touch. Without wanting to sound like an arrogant pig fan, it's bad enough when Chelsea, Everton and Tottenham take the pick of our best youngsters but its even more galling when the likes of Bournemouth and Hull start getting in on the act. I'd like for us to stand up for ourselves for a change and tell them to come back with a serious offer or f*** off.

Congratulations to the lad, just won the Euro under 19 tournament with England out in Georgia.

Hopefully our days of having to sell the best young talent coming through the the academy are over.

I wouldn't hope too much for that but I like the sound of it.

I've been thinking about this and I reckon it boils down to.....

"Do I stay at the Blades on £300 a week or go to Bournemouth in the Prem on £6000 a week?"

What would you do boys and girls?.......o_O

Just where is the loyalty these days!!!!!.......
