Until then we stay as we are, it's an area we are NOT weak in so there is no need to rush.

'Until then we stay as we are...' oh OK then. If you think we shouldn't try to bring in another midfielder for 7 weeks then that's that then. This strategy (whilst I'm not in total disagreement with by the way) is in your opinion only and what you would probably do. However there's a good chance that you aren't Chris Wilder and CW may well have another view to yours. If CW wants to hold out for 7 weeks and play a game of who blinks first with Southend them I'm fine with that. However if CW wants to try and crystallise this transfer one way or another soon then I'm fine with that too.

Of course the 'hold your nerve for another seven weeks' strategy may well be a good strategy to have, alternatively it might be better to make a decision on the lad sooner rather than later and either try to make it happen so that the lad has some if the pre season to train with and integrate with the squad, or we move on to another target. Sitting and waiting to see of Southend 'cave in' and accept our existing offer just prior to transfer deadline day is an option granted, but that's all it is. Another option available to the club.

Back to your comment. I agree that we are not weak in midfield. But I do think that there is room for improvement (as there always is in any team/squad) and having another player in there with other playing strengths would only enhance our options. It's CW's call whether Leonard is the man to do that and whether he is his preferred option. I dont really know enough about the lad or CWs/the clubs transfer budget and strategy to categorically be able to say whether we should push anymore for the lad or not. Luckily though CW does and the fact that he has been chasing this lad suggests to me that CW also thinks that there is room for improvement and that he thinks this lad could add that improvement. Personally id prefer Utd to try and sort this out one way or another sooner rather than later so that we either get him or close the matter and move on, as I would prefer new lads to have as much pre season with the rest of the squad as possible. Whilst last seasons August transfers worked out well I do think that the circumstances where we had a lot of players not having pre season with us contributed massively to us having a piss poor start. A piss poor start for the club this season could see existing confidence evaporate quickly and it would be more difficult to turn around.

Think he had no choice as it was clearly quoted by the selling clubs that we had put in offers

Exactly, and that's the only reason for his departure from his usual practice. I imagine, if asked, he would confirm the Blackburn lad as well.

Are we on about Justin Leonard the golfer or Jason Leonard the Rugby player because I am now officially lost on this thread. :)

Wilder full of praise for him when asked today, said he's exactly the type of player we are looking at, would fit perfectly into our style of play. Were defo going hard for him

Interesting, has he said that in an interview or more privately?

Did he say that Leonard was keen to join us?

I didnt hear him say it, but I was probably stopping my little un from trying run and join in the training session at the time, he said him and knill both knew him well and what was said above, I think it will probably get done !

Wilder can't say that Leonard is keen to join you because he hasn't said it. As for the Star paper article, that said 'But the South Yorkshire club are believed to be preparing another approach in an attempt to break the impasse.' IF you do make another offer it will have to be a serious uplift of the current one, otherwise Ron will say no again. Someone said earlier that this is like Ground Hog day, ain't that the truth. Neither Ron, Phil Brown nor us fans want to lose Lenny so you will have to bid high for it to happen.

Do you seriously think Wilder doesn't know whether Lenny wants to join us or not? He does and Lenny does.

Like it or not we're a massive club and a very attractive proposition. You're Southend. Your chairman wears a ludicrous rug and your manager is a very strange non-human colour. These things count.

Stop yourself right now, have a cold shower and just read what you said!

If you want to talk like that owlstalk is that way ------->

Like I said Lenny has said nothing publicly, that's a fact. I'm Southend and very proud, Whatever you think of our chairman, I'm proud of him too as he has made nobs like you resort to personal abuse because of his stance. True, Phil is a strange colour and has exquisite taste in polo shirts

But when you balance up whether Lenny will like some of the posters on here, well, then these things count as well.

Whoops, nearly forgot, we've got a pier and a beach as well. Happy days.

Yes you are a massive club. The biggest in league 1 for years!

You seem to feel that any player would jump at the chance to play for you.

Of course you are a much more attractive proposition for players. Bigger club and fanbase. Higher league and wages etc.

That said Lenny could go to you and barely get a game. How would that help his career?

Lenny is our longest serving player. He knows our club and is settled in the area. He will be offered a very good contract by the club. Rumoured to be 5kpw + to stay.

If he goes he goes. But be under no illusion. Our chairman is very stubborn and i reckon it will take a bid of 600k+ for us to even consider it. We don't want to sell and we don't have to sell. That puts us in the driving seat.

Personally I hope the blades just jog on to other targets so we can just get on with building our squad for promotion.

You have said a few times that you don't expect Southend to be amongst the top 6. I personally think that we could push the top 2. I also think you will finish lower mid table.

Yes, but you have to pay to walk on the pier

Rest of England, its free.

I can go along with us being an attractive proposition, but leave the massive jibe to the wendys, it suits their massive ego’s. As for the constant Rug Ron jibe, well, it was funny the first time and quite frankly, counts for nothing.

Tbf, if he's as good as people say, we'll struggle to find an alternative for less than £600k so we may well offer that kind of money.
