One of my best mates and me had just left the Penthouse (UK Subs I think) and he had a piss on the slopey bit just down the escalators from Rackhams and the cops nabbed him ,it was the night before he had his final interview for the fire service. He begged them and they eventually let him go with a verbal warning ,he went on to become one of the top fire officers in South Yorks eventually before retiring a couple of years ago. He always was a lucky bleeder.
Did he tell them he was practising his hose techniques for the interview ?? Lol

Yeh I never got that lucky !

Was the lad from Woodhouse by any chance?

As a kid born in the 1970's, St Mary's Gate, and the inner ring road has always existed as long as I can remember.

However, Looking at an OS map from the 1950's, I found that pre St Mary's Gate, Bramall Lane used to extend further towards the city centre.

I presume there are a fair few forum members who remember this. Also on the map are a couple of pubs on the now demolished part of BL, Did anybody used to drink in them on match days? What were they called? Any reminiscences?

Cheers guys.

When we were kids, there was a youth club which ran during the summer holidays in that building on the corner of BL and Cherry St.

When you look at that photo it's difficult to comprehend how United managed to leave so little scope for further redevelopment. Even with the new stand it looks like little over half the plot is utilised. Why oh why didn't we just turn the pitch round 90 degrees.

Reg Brealey wanted to and make The Bramall Centre all-seater. Naturally, Sheffield City Council wouldn't let him.

The South Stand was built before Brearley's tenure though. I think Hassall was the brainchild. Either way, Brearley would never have seen it through as he was another one with dubious credentials and eventually went bust. The council were and still are a set of obdurate arseholes.

Following on from my post yesterday re Bramall Lane in the 1950's, I've been through the photographs on Picture Sheffield and put them onto the OS map so people can get a feel for what BL would have been like in that period.
Hope you enjoy.
