Well, you'll do your best as ever Sean...

Ive never criticised Wilder. I'm quite happy to trust his judgement on all matters. He did get us promotion with 100 points. Has my question irked you in some way?

Not at all, my retort was ever-so-slightly t.i.c (as I thought you'd pick up on) in view of your Kev-defending techniques....

I wasn't too bothered when we sold DCL, I didn't get too het up over the Ramsdale sale. I even thought the two Kyles sale wasn't too bad (although I would have preferred to keep Walker at the time) but from what I've seen of David Brooks, we should be doing everything we can to keep him unless a ridiculous bid comes in. And by that I mean £10Million!

I see something in Brooks and I would like to see whether he develops that potential at United and not in Evertons (or anyone else's for that matter) development squad.

I'll explain it to you danny.

I said the other day, when it was stated that we'd brought Brooks back "because we wanted to have a closer look at him" that this was absolute bollocks. I smelled a rat straightaway when I heard that.

And now, that smell of rat has just got stronger - in other words - my suspicions that we have reneged on the Chesterfield deal because are planning to sell him on, have just got stronger.

No doubt you never suspected a thing eh?
Wrong eh?

I hope we don't sell Brooks. I've not seen a lot of him, but it sounds like he has had a great tournament in the summer, has a lot of potential and could be just the sort of player we need to build with as we look to go forwards.

I think selling him will be a backward step

I haven't seen enough of him to say whether or not he's the next Ronaldo but I do think we need to play hardball on this. If we let him go for a reasonable sum they'll come back for Whiteman, then Semple when he's fit. The purpose of our academy isn't to make Hoyland and Unsworth look good.

It's worth risking losing £1m (if Brooks stays but doesn't progress) to draw a line in the sand. Every time a club like Everton comes in with a £1m plus offer it turns the player's head and we lose them. If we start saying no, come back with a £5m offer, they might turn their attention to other academies, like Barnsley.

Regards the title I agree "we no longer need to sell our youngsters"
But realistically ALL players at EVERY club are saleable assets.

How do you place a value on a youngster with potential?
They are all risks with tend to fail so historically clubs wouldnt bid so much.

However PL clubs have so much money that they can waste some of it and easily afford to mop up the best youngsters at £1- £2 million a shot.

I remember 2 years ago we had the talented Louis Reed and many said we can build our team around him
and if Spurs bid 2 or 3 million we should turn it down. Where is Louis Reed now? He's still not broken in the team.

In league 1 we were desperate for promotion, struggling financially and couldn't afford to plan for the future.
However now we are in the Championship we can NOW have one eye to the future.

I expect we can now afford to resist a £1 or £2 million bid for him.
However if it's £3 million plus then it reaches a point where we'd be stupid to resist such a large offer for someone who isn't anyway good enough for our first team.

This all comes from the fact we have been a L1 club for such a long time. We are not in a position to turn down £1m bids for young players who only show potential.
I can understand fully why our youngsters don't play in the first team as all that mattered was getting out of L1 and cementing our position in the Championship.

Once youngsters actually play for the first team will we be in a position to ask for £5/6 million for them.

Its a strange one as the only way you know if they are going to be good enough is to play them. Unfortunately as a club we are not in a position to take that gamble.

It will be interesting with the next lot of first year pros as Ty Smith, Semple, Gilmoor, Hallam, Slater are all SUFC mad and been at the club for 11 years. Where as Whiteman, Brookes, have only been hear for 2 or 3 years and dare i say don't really have SUFC in their blood.......

Brookes is a top player, without doubt, but can anyone really see him playing week in week out for the first team next season. That fact leaves the door open for Everton to come in and whisk him away to the bright lights of Bootle.

Funny how DCL is deemed good enough to be a starter for a top Prem team. Odd.

All tweeted within the last few hours, so hopefully that puts the Brookes to Everton rumours to bed, once and for all. Wilder has said that Brookes will either be part of the Blades 1st team squad for next season, or he will return to Chesterfield. It really doesn't get any clearer than that, unless of course, you just like a good moan and any opportunity to slag United off?

Some other interesting pieces in there too. Brayford has been put-up for transfer, so presumably will not be returning to us.

Wilder has set a deadline of the end of the week to complete several transfers, else they will be binned and we move on. Presumably Ryan Leonard and Ricky Holmes?

Jake Wright has signed a new contract.

Make what you will of all the above, but I reckon it's another good news day, personally. :)

Of course another factor in this is that he's very young, probably doesn't have an agent and will rely on this dad for guidance. Not the same as 'we couldn't stand in his way', if he was my son I'd be telling him to get off to Everton. He'd be surrounded by far better facilities and players and would have more chance of making it.

Part of the first team sqaud could mean loaned back from Everton.....

I'd put money on him having an agent after the Toulon tournament.

They will have been like flies round shit:

" Dave, sign here and I'll give you a lolly"
"No, Dave sign here and you'll get a new pair of boots and a nice clock for your mum and dad"
"Don't listen to them Dave. Sign with me and I'll give you a 3 year old VW Polo, a new shed for your dad and a slap up meal at a Harvester"
etc etc etc

I think you are being very naive in saying Brookes won't have an agent. Any player who has been at Man City will have had an official agent from 16 years old and an unofficial agent from about 14.
As for more chance of making it i am not so sure. Everton are sweeping up the English prospects i agree but when they have just spent £60m on new first team players it certainly limits the opportunities these lads will get.

A £15k a week contract for 3 years is closer to why these youngsters move far more than maybe getting in Evertons first team.

What I think we need to remember is that once a team comes from the premier league they are offering our player wages which would be at least on par with our top earners. Now if you think we should give Brooks another contract the same as Billy's to see if he develops then I think you should leave this decision to the club

Saw a comment on the Stir website that said there were something like 28 ex-Blades playing in the PL. Not sure if it's true - perhaps we need a thread on the lines of "name the Blades in the PL".

Jags
Walker
Naughton
DCL
Cahill
Lowton
Maguire
Phillips

....struggling beyond that.

FFS Giddings, it's BROOKS!

I don't want us to sell our young players - I don't think anyone does, but we've got to start thinking more practically about it because we have the said players under contract, if we block any move or any progression in their careers it's really easy for us to end up with a tribunal fee, a fraction of the cost and because Brookes has only been there a few years actually relatively fuck all. We should never be aiming to sell our players, but young players heads are turned and with DCLs success after not looking like he'd get a kick with the blades has to inspire a few.

Hopefully. But then again Harry had a touch of sunstroke that lasted right up to the moment Hull signed him, so saying that the lad could figure in our plans or go out on loan doesn't really quell my doubts. Maybe Everton will still loan him out to Chessy?

Sorry if I sound to be on a bit of a downer but I think we've been hear before.

This summer represents the first real test of our "ambitious" Board, both with regard to purchases and potential sales ........

Lets see how they measure up to the test ....... ;)

I think he's got three years as he sighed a new contract. They can't poach him until that expires.
