Forgive me but as you've raised it I can't resist either. The bluster is presenting RugRon as some hard as nails; doesn't give an inch; ace wheeler-dealer. He's not. You will sell Leonard and you'll sell him for less than your original asking price. All that will happen before the end of August. Bookmark it.

As to offering me definitions, forgive me but you're on my territory there. It won't be necessary.

But what if Rug Ron has "Bald Man Syndrome" ? This might make him INCREDIBLY hard to negotiate with.

After all: "Hairs are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos, and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald-headed men are uptight".

"Is he going to court?"
"No"
"Then why is he wearing that old suit?"
"Old suit!. I'll have you know, that this suit was cut by Hawks of Saville Row, just because the best tailoring you've seen, is above your fucking appendix"..............
I could go on, it's my favourite film!!!
Good choice that man!!!

But how do you know that people don't get snippets of information from other sources (not Southend fc) ? Just possibly someone at the Sheffield end might just know what the initial asking price is...after all they are currently negotiating a sale price. I'm not sure how you can be so sure that no one knows what the Southend valuation of a player was / is.

For the record, I'd say Southend's initial asking price was around the £700k figure which Utd won't pay. So if Utd get him cheaper than that (which is a strong possibility) then they will have done well - hence my earlier comment. As for whether my figure is correct or not....well you might have to stay 'intrigued' until any deal is sorted and any further details become known. Tbh, whether this goes through or not it's not really a concern to me. There are other fishes in the sea if it doesn't.
Plural of fish is fish. You should know that being a seaside bloke!

Sorry to be pedantic but I need to take some pleasure from this 54 page monster thread that appears to be going nowhere!

I'm hoping this thread one day becomes as legendary as the infamous 'Dan Burn' thread. I bet that one is still smouldering somewhere ready to ignite again one day...

As we need a centre half or two....

It looks as though the Holmes deal is 'dead in the water' and Brooks will get his chance, great news.I suspect that this will enable us to free the funds to meet Southends valuation of Leonard and that he will sign for us next week,i think this is the best decision all round.

Maybe......or maybe Charlton have said they want Brooks on loan as part of the deal....?

But Wilder has said that Brooks will not go out on loan to anywhere else but Chessie and I can't see him going back on his word, can you?

It's probable we will sell Leonard and it may well be before the end of August but neither you nor I know the original asking price so I don't think there are any bragging points to had by you on that one. As for definitions, maybe you need to rethink that one.......

Sneaky one Rooty! Getting one in early. The dog won't have got up yet to walk Pinchy.:)

Just so that we can do this fairly, how much is Southend's original asking price?

I don't know. Rumour has it that it's around £700,000. The point is not quantum, but rather the inevitability that they won't get it. If any club was going to pay it, he would be gone by now. That's axiomatic (ask the Southend bloke for a definition).

There is no bidding war going on. The player wants to go. We're approaching the end game. Southend will sell for less than their original asking price.

I like axiomatic, but I like otiose better. Just apropos of nothing. Bit like this thread really.

Sorry to be even more pedantic, but the seaside bloke might be a biblical scholar - 5 loaves and 2 fishes and all that.;) Nothing like a bit of biblical language to make your case!

Blimey Pinchy....I agree with one of your posts. I'm going for a lay down in a dark room!

Back to subject in question. It's obvious that if Utd end up signing the lad then they will have agreed on a negotiated price with the selling club. If Utd were desperate enough to sign the lad at the original asking price (which we arent) then we would have just paid it and done the deal a while ago. Common sense says it will be higher than our opening bid and lower than Southends opening selling price. Southend wanted to start a bidding war but it seems they haven't got one. Seems we have played it pretty cool and calculating so far.

Wilder did not go back on his word the club did. Wilder was never in favour of Brooks going out on Ioan, but someone else agreed to it. ( who, well have a guess?)
If anything this proves again wilder overall control of all things player related and occurs just after negotiating the new terms of his contract.

My money's on Mr Meadows he's been very quiet lately.

Literally in the last 24 hours...

If you mean by cancelling the loan, that's a different matter, clubs do it, clubs recall players and not an eyebrow is raised. If he's publicly stated that Chessie is the only club he'll go on loan to (I've only seen Shields' tweet on this) then he's backed himself into a corner and needs to stand by this or risks losing credibility.

As a guest I probably shouldn't have posted my last post, especially as I'm just adding to this thread getting longer for no obvious reason. I'm going to trot back to ShrimperZone now and wait until this deal is done or not before adding anything more. Bye, thanks for having me.

Carry on mi owd. You're not a pig and we've got lots of pointless threads that go nowhere in the archives. Feel free to bump this one in 2019.

If it wasn't for pointless threads, closed season would be boring.

You've behaved admirably, so well done you. I hope your lot have a good season as I hope we do. Best wishes mate.

Surely it's simply how good the player turns out to be?

If we sign a player for £250k and pay him £3k a week and he is worse than Hussey then we've had our pants down? But if we pay £5m for a striker and pay him £20k a week, but he scores 40 goals then he's an absolute bargain!

I don't think the policy has changed since Wilder came in, the manager works to a budget and we pay what we think that player is worth.

I loved Beattie but at the price he cost and the fact that McCabe obviously brought in Robson to spend his way out and it didn't work meant that McCabe sold Beattie half way during the season, when as far as I can remember, Beattie didn't want to leave it must have only been financial why he left. To me, Beattie seemed a to be a deal that was a bit beyond what we could afford and yes he delivered and is one of my favourite ever players but we might have been better suited buying a younger player for maybe £2m and its more of an investment. Ched was that player really and its debatable whether he offered greater value than Beattie.
