Some reyt melt downs going on here.

Window has only been open 13 days

There are 45 days until the first game

There are a further 70 until it closes

We haven't even reported for pre Season yet

I expect there will be a more than capable squad assembled in time for kick off and by Wilders own words a couple of spots held back for later in august once he's assessed how the team is getting on

one more thing

he hasn't signed ..........................as yet

I'm sick of people claiming that forwards don't need to be a goal threat.
We've already got one of those.

There's a difference between being a goal threat and scoring lots of goals. How many forward pairings score 20 goals a season each? Very few and it's normally in a team that wins the league.

Many partnerships down the years have had one big physical presence occupying centre halves and creating a threat that either ends in a goal, an assist or even creating space for someone to find space and score. There is more to forward play than just simply scoring goals. A target man that scores 10 but creates 5 or 6 through other work is a good player.

Look at Jordan Rhodes, he's crap for Wednesday because his one talent is finishing and he doesn't have the right support around him to actually do the one thing he's known for.

Basham and Brayford aint centre backs. They can play as a stop-gap in L1 but will end up on their arse in the championship.

Very harsh describing Basham as a 'stop-gap' CB last season, ridiculous actually. He was absolutely immense most of the time and got stronger as the season went on. Credit where it's due mate, come on?

Agree that next season he will find it tougher but I still don't see him being embarrassed.

Would much prefer to see if we can get the Gallagher lad from Southampton on loan. Similar type player but better

I get what you're saying but I think the game has moved on from that.
I want a Diego Costa, it sounds like you're still after Heskey.

This time last year we had only signed 2, Duffy & Hussey, and as Charlton were signing all our targets the meltdown was full on then too.

Didn`t work out too bad did it!

Hugill was almost ever-present for Preston last season....not sure why they would be looking to off-load?

That said, going into the last year of his contract so maybe there is reluctance on either side to sign a new one?

2 years left on his current deal (old contract was replaced in september), and PNE rejected a £1.5m offer from Ipswich in January

This thread just died faster than the Jags one in that case.

It's a measure of the tedium of close season that a one sentence thread from a poster with under 200 posts (no offence OP) can result in 4 pages in 12 hours, 3 meltdowns and a couple of heated arguments.

We'd be lost without this thread. :D

I don't think the O/P is someone who'd make shit up for the sake of it, we are said to be considering spending on a striker, and Hugill's the sort of player I could see Wilder being interested in. So I wouldn't rule this one out.

Good luck with that. There are a handful of players like that in the world. They all cost a fortune and want to play in the Champions League.

That's a whole different world. If you can find a good support striker worth 10 goals and a few assists each season, sign him....quick.

Starting to think your Paul Mitchell with your scouting knowledge :)

Also very harsh taking my comment as a criticism of Basham, I'm his biggest fan and was praising him last season long before it became fashionable. I don't recall many games where he played centre back, i.e. the central one of three. He either played wide at the back or in midfield. United will play 4 at the back next season as much as a back 3 and he won't fit in a four as one of two central defenders. He won't fit in a 4 as a full back either. In a back four scenario I see Bash as our defensive midfielder. This is where I'm coming from, we need new central defenders at the back, not more bloody third rate strikers.

I just want a James Beattie rather than Iffy Onuora.
Personally I think Leon Clarke is a league 1 version of what we need.

But we want a transfer and we want one now. Players have to be signed in order of priority. We can't sign a striker until we get two centre-backs. It doesn't matter that a midfielder or striker we want becomes available first. That has to wait until the centre-back is holding a scarf above his head.

Jimmy White's Deadline Day Army!

We ❤️ Transfers.

Maybe Billy Sharp is too? Leon was hugely impressive once he attained full fitness. On that form he gets a starting berth. There are two striker places. Neither of them have 'reserved' on the team sheet.

Fair do's mate, just how it came across upon reading. Completely agree we need new CBs. We all like Bash so all is good.

Yes and we need them by tomorrow. There's a much shorter transfer window for centre-backs. In any event the season starts a week on Saturday.
