No, it is just a function of age.

Harris retired in 1973 so to have seen his teams play and remember the football, you would have to have been born say before 1963.

Basset's glory years finished around 93 which is 24 years ago, so plenty in their 30s and 40s will remember the good times. Additionally there is more footage of the Basset era available on line.

Harris was a gentleman manager who built a superb team and arguably retired too early. He was a man of his era and Basset was likewise. Why you seem to have this fixation about an either/or choice between them, mystifies me.

I watched great United games under both but was only 9 when Harris left, so naturally have better, stronger and more reliable memories of times under DB.

Do you have fond memories of that fine footballer Wally Fucking Downes?

Bassett had no respect for the beautiful game. His loathing for proper football was and remains a disgrace. When he apologises I shall show him some respect. There was no misery watching John Harris' football team, yet Bassett is mentioned ten times as often on here. That's disgraceful.

And we're now doffing our caps to Wally Fucking Useless Downes! Incredible.

Kick it Long; Kick it Hard; Kick it High.
Did you, or did you not celebrate promotion at Leicester?

Where has Bassett indicated a loathing for ‘proper football’?

Rumour has it that at Forest, when they were financially big hitters in the 2nd tier, they played some really good football. Utilising a certain way of playing in certain circumstances (resulting in overachievement) doesn’t automatically equal a loathing for different playing styles.

Blimey, did Bassett fettle your future missus behind the bike sheds or something similar? Your contempt for a man who did nothing but good for SUFC on his time working here is baffling.

He did the best with the tools he was given to work with...and he did a sterling job with the resources available. He also got us to Wembley for the first time in just under 60 years.

Your consistent criticism of a fella held in high regard by 99% of other Blades fans seems to imply you are a very embittered and strange man. Or maybe it is just yourself who is the all seeing all knowing super fan. Nah. On second thoughts I will just put you down as suffering from delusions of grandeur...someone who likes the sound of themselves a bit too much. You seem like the sort who could start an argument in a phone box with only a mirror for company.

Me...I will always fondly remember Bassett for what the good times he brought...you on the other hand can spend all your time watching the Brazil 1970 team on DVD and fantasising about when Utd had a team that could have ripped that team apart. I'm comfortable that with 99% of Blades fans sharing my views on Bassett's time at Utd, maybe...just maybe, out opinion holds more truth than the rantings of a bore.

Did you, or did you not celebrate promotion at Leicester?

Yes, wildly. He was the right man at the right time.

Do you think his style would work now?

Would you like to watch it?

Would you rather our team be admired by others than simply bookmarked by reference to a style of play?

Did you celebrate when Freeman scored after 17 passes?

Were you proud to be associated with the passing football played by our team last season?

Do you agree with Tufty's constant references to "proper football" and playing the 'right way' or are you one of the thousands who pretends not to hear it?

Do you agree with Kevin Gage that Tufty's football is 'worlds apart' from that of Bassett or do you cling to the Hoofer's Touchstone utilised by so many on here?

Where has Bassett indicated a loathing for ‘proper football’?

By bringing pub football to the professional game.

Come on mate, leave the alchemy to others. You well know Bassett was a long ball merchant. A devotee of the loathsome Charles Hughes and the three pass and POMO shite. Defend him by all means if you like that sort of stuff but base metal ain't gold and never will be.

Stolen my reply there BFS!

He even admits it in his own words. Strange lad.

You clearly don't follow my wisdom as closely as you should. My regular readers will know that's what I've always said. I've matured like a fine wine since those days.

You hoofers would be well advised to do likewise. Throw away your "Land that Time Forgot" Wimbledon and Watford VHS tapes. Move on from Vinnie Jones, Mark Morris, Paul Williams, Jostein Flo and Wally Fucking Downes. Tear yourself away from Lurch marching to the half way line and launching it to the clouds.

There's some good football at the Lane these days. You might learn to enjoy it, given time. Tufty calls it the 'right way' but you Bassett Boys won't have heard that, because it doesn't fit.

Kick it Long; Kick it Hard; Kick it High.

You're just full of your own clichés.

Downes was recognised as a talented footballer in his young days and not just a midfield enforcer. He barely played here anyway and whilst he undoubtedly wanted to toughen players up, you clearly missed the styles of play of those teams he coached after us.

Harris isn't mentioned as much because he packed in the year I was born and I'm in my mid fucking forties.

Well it's nothing new. It's what I've always said.

I've done you the courtesy of answering your question. Will you reciprocate?

Do you think his style would work now? No

Would you like to watch it? Yes

Would you rather our team be admired by others than simply bookmarked by reference to a style of play? I don't think the 2 are mutually exclusive

Did you celebrate when Freeman scored after 17 passes? Yes

Were you proud to be associated with the passing football played by our team last season? Yes, however I would have been no less proud had we achieved the same outcome with a more direct style

Do you agree with Tufty's constant references to "proper football" and playing the 'right way' or are you one of the thousands who pretends not to hear it? Proper football is beating the opposition, no more no less.

Do you agree with Kevin Gage that Tufty's football is 'worlds apart' from that of Bassett or do you cling to the Hoofer's Touchstone utilised by so many on here. I agree, but worlds apart is not synonymous with 'superior'.

I my opinion, anyone who attacks Bassett with such vitriol, but then admits to celebrating wildly under his tenure, is a hypocrite.

When did anyone say they think we should play like Bassett had us playing 20 fucking years ago, FFS get off your high horse. Have you ever wondered whi people argue with you constantly, it's not because you've "matured like a fine wine", it's because you think you're the only one who's watched football in the last 20 years. Of course things have moved on since then, that doesn't mean there isn't space for nostalgia, it doesn't even mean there isn't space for mixing it up every now and then when you're not having any luck playing it around.

You are not the font of all knowledge, to me you sound like one of them blokes that insists he's better than everyone at work but never gets a promotion because the management think they're a twat.

You clearly don't follow my wisdom as closely as you should. My regular readers will know that's what I've always said. I've matured like a fine wine since those days.

I dont need to follow any 'words of wisdom' from you. I've managed just fine up to now.

'My regular readers'...fk me sideways...do you think your a columnist for the Sunday times or something... dear me. You do know you only post on a football forum don't you?

'I've matured like a fine wine...' ha ha love it. So your not a bit eccentric or a tad egotistical then...

When you leave the village to go to work in a morning....is the village without its idiot until you return...? I don't think your a full schilling fella.

Congratulations. Our survey shows that you are a Hoofer. That tells me all I need to know. Pop down to your local rec any Sunday morning. You will see all your "footballing" heart could desire.

There are those who tell me that I make up views like yours...

What do you think I should coco? Looks like the Neanderthal spirit lives on. Doesn't think Hoof would work but would still like to watch it...

Mmmmm. Only in S2.

People constantly argue with me because, like Don Quixote, they like tilting at windmills.

In answer to your first question, Blade for Sale for one, and there are many others. We have the least sophisticated fans in the land. Only in S2 does Bassett get anything but a passing mention, usually with 'dinosaur' in the same sentence.

All I ask for is honesty. If you like your football to consist of a series of aimless punts in the general direction of the opposition goal; devoid of any creativity or vision, that is your prerogative. One of your number has had the courage to stand up for grotesque hoof. Why don't the rest of you?

Let's be 'avin yer, oofers.

Selectively misquoting what BFS said, reflects more on you than him.

He said he wouldn't mind it if we were winning but expressed no preference for 'hoof', as you so knowingly call it.

I'm out of this thread now, as I suspect you have what you wanted all along. A little joust with fellow Blades and the joy that you've pissed a few people off for no good reason.

You really ought to put the keyboard down one day and come out of the bedroom into the sunlight.

Bassett gets more than a passing mention here because he took us in our darkest days up in successive seasons, people remember the good times, it doesn't mean they think his style of football is better than Wilders, it's only you who thinks everyone else does to stroke your own ego.

Maybe you should stop trying to paint yourself as an intelect and admit that you don't really understand people that well, its plain for everyone else to see.

Columnist for the Sunday Times? Hell no! Firstly it's a Tory mouthpiece and secondly I have a greater command of the English language than any newspaper hack.

Journalism was once on my list of potential professions. It became an also-ran.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach....

The only painting on here is by non-football fans painting themselves into a corner...

I'm utterly convinced you're the bloke who was in the Sentinel toilets after the Bradford game whilst I had a big piss

'Mature' bloke finished his business and gets drawn into conversation with bloke just coming in who comments what a season it's been, and the best since Bassett in his view.

Cue 'mature' bloke saying he didn't like Bassett and didn't enjoy it under him. Cue bemused look on other blokes face and me zipping up with huge wry smile.

I can hand on heart say that, ignoring the end of his tenure when fellow Blades clashed, I've only seen 2 Blades ever say they didn't enjoy it in general under Bassett.

One in the Sentinel toilets and you on here.

My 10 penneth on the Pinchy led debate on DB ( and this is a repeat).

Having had conversations with Dave Bassett back in the day, he quite plainly was a student of the game. His admiration for Italian football back then (height of AC's dominance)was at the forefront of the conversation (hardly kick and rush eh!).
It was an eye opening and somewhat in depth chat in a quiet room and I left it with a new opinion of Dave and his football philosophy.
We touched on his style of management and playing style at SUFC, Wimbledon and Watford, the message was common, no silk purse, hence the (relatively successful) sows ear.
I've never doubted since those days that had Dave had the clout to build a team to play how he'd like, we'd have played something like last season's team.(Bassett is very much a mentor of CW).
My advice to those who are taking up cudgels with Mr Pinch, don't bite, he's the biggest wum on here and enjoys the sport it brings him immensely.
He's also a pretty knowledgeable fellah too....

When you say 'mature bloke' Dav, is that code for 'cantankerous argumentative old bstard who would need help finding the end of his own cock'?

Mmhhh. Maybe you have a point.

Can we have a forum for wannabee comedians and another forum for inane pointless banter and keep this one for the purpose intended FFS.

Man love has been involved in this somewhere hasn't it!!???
Be honest, we won't laugh!!!
