I can't think of any other type of work other than professional sport where the boss earns less than the workers.

It's part of the problem for me.
Boss should be the highest paid if only to put the players in their place. Then when someone comes wanting a pay rise, he can say no, that's more than I am paid.

I've never taken on anything just for the money

I've taken on jobs because I wanted the challenge and I've walked away from them when I wasn't getting any satisfaction from them.

I've also taken on many unpaid jobs because I wanted the challenge and to benefit the community.

Like Wilder I've never been sacked, and like me I don't believe that Wilder would walk for more money.

Now if his managers started not delivering on promises they have made to him, that would be a completely different kettle of fish and I wouldn't be surprised to see him take the same actions that I did on a couple of ocassions.

I'll maintain that if you were offered double your money, and all you had to do was to get up early to sign the contract for the same job (unrealistic analogy I apreciate), you'd take it. At some point, on the spectrum, we are all motivated by money. There's a vast difference in how much though.

In the end, this is becoming a diversion. I'm making a point about what I think I know is Wilder's position right now. Our debate about money motivation is a sideshow.

Money is not the motivation. It is what you can do with the money that motivates. If he has enough to do what he wants then job satisfaction, club loyalty, aspirations to achieve and receive adulation and status all come into play. He may well have ambitions that include taking HIS Sheffield United on a terrific journey and becoming our Sir Alex! Bang on - that's the issue. The money itself is not a motivator in my view. If you are demotivated because you have a shit boring job and they say we can't change the job but here have more money, you might stay but I would argue that you would not be more motivated.

So the issue/motivator here is proper recognition for a fantastic job done. If we were willing bring Adkins in on that reported amount based on what he'd done before he joined us, we should be more than willing to bring CW's package more in line with that based on what he's achieved since joining us.

Few things are more de motivating than finding out someone who does the same job as you is on more money. Even worse if you find out someone who does the same job as you but not as well is getting paid more. Doesn't matter if you're in a £20k a year job or a £200k a year job. It's the principle.

I'm not going to reveal any sources, but I have a bit of 2nd hand ITK here.

Wilder is human. I remain stunned at the number of people who are oblivious to how money plays a key role in just about everyone's decision making.

I've no doubt he'd stay with us for less than he could screw elsewhere. I've even less doubt to there being a limit to that loyalty.

I'm not suggesting that Porterfield did a bad job. Far from it. But I think he was given a 10 year contract? That was always going to end in tears, especially with an owner like Brearley.
