It was the first time ever we sold out the Laver Stand. 36k in total I believe. Was also one of the few games where Sabella lived up to the hype.

I was in it. I played Saturday football in those days so didn't have a kop season ticket. Kop sold out so had to go in the SS. Still fresh in my memory, even if what I had for breakfast today isn't...

1978 we'd just beaten the European champions and then we were to take on River Plate.

Anyone else remember this almost 39 year ago?

Interesting to note that Shanks was whinging about the bookings for the lads in the wall and asking for some video back up.

I was there!! Great win...I like Hamson, good left foot...

Fecking great night was there too :-) thats when the champions didn't play reserve or youth teams in cup competitions ,hamsons strike was a peach can't remember who hit the bar for them that night but the woodwork was still vibrating 10 mins later .. unfortunately I remember round after with Nicky Johns performance against L**ds !

I was a tad too young for that game, surely all you older lot are exaggerating. No flares, no smoke bombs no seats ripped out must have been like a pre season friendly.

If I remember they hammered our goal all night think they hit the bar or post half a dozen times.
Nevertheless it was a great night and one of my first nights at the Lane.
I also remember when arsenal played us and Malcolm McDonald destroyed us.

There was a real fire on the kop. People just circled it for warmth. Nobody gave a fuck.

Them were't days. :)

No just wearing your colours with pride , good old fashioned scrapping in the street & on the terraces to the tune of ' your gonna get fkg head kicked in ' ... ahhh good old fashioned family fun ..:-)

There was a smoke bomb thrown near the end of the game from the Lane End. Steve Conroy screamed for attention (I think he was asking the ref to stop the game) but Andy Keeley picked it up and chucked it off of the pitch

I was supposed to be back at my boarding school that evening for the beginning of my 6th year but my dad informed the headmaster at my school that we were on holiday until 2nd of Sept and he was fine with it :)

I was able to watch the home games against Liverpool, River Plate and Crystal Palace

Couldn't move on the kop, hamsons goal was a fantastic strike, Emlyn Hughes said the atmosphere was frightening.
The river plate game ended 1-2 if I remember correctly, their goals were amazing strikes from distance that dipped and swerved,? I was 18, how time flys. :(
Alonso's equaliser was a swerving shot from outside the box at the Lane End. Luque's winner was a powerful straight shot at the Kop End. Below is the middle pages of the match programme. The photos are of the scorers

I seem to have memories of all the Liverpool wall being booked just before the free kick for not retreating, anyone any idea if I've dreamt that or not:confused:

I went to 3 games in 3 days.. Rotherham beat Arsenal 3-1 on the Tuesday between the Liverpool & River Plate games. I think Macdonald got injured that night & hardly played again! The Crystal Palace game was Woodys last home game & Varadi's league debut I think

Kop for me aged 24. So rammed that unusually we ended up down the front at the railings. The photo was just about my view of it as we were behind the photographers. Great night match atmosphere.

You're right Diamond. Will never forget the row of numbers as the wall were turned around by the ref so he could book them all. Ha ha!!

See post #68 in the Great Blades Moments in MS Paint thread ;-)

What a night.
During the day I was playing football in the street with my friends, the ball went in a garden I went to get it got my foot caught striding over the small spiked railings, spike went straight into my leg. My mum took me to the children's hospital cleaned and stitched up.
My mum said I better not go to the game i pleaded with her I was going with my dad.
Anyway I was allowed to go. Went in the John st stand the little like shed thing that bent round on the corner near the away end, the one and only time I went in that section. My two memories from that night was the excruciating pain I suffered when I jumped up when Hamson's shot hit the back of the net. And the ball boy stopping the ball from going in the net when the Liverpool player tried to put it in even though he'd been flagged off side.
Liverpool really did do everything but score that night.
Just a shame we couldn't repeat it in the next round I think we lost 4-1 at home to Leeds.
