Players often have the last say. There doesn't have to be a formal request. Maguire, at the suggestion of his dodgy agent, feigned sunstroke.
I'm hoping Wilder has the last say as we don't want to be paying over the odds for him. :)

I'm sure I read somewhere that when players put in official transfer requests, they give up their entitlement to being paid money owed to them from the selling club.

Meaning in this case Southend would benefit financially and we wouldn't have to pay as much for them to recieve their valuation.

That's two of us then

Just to explain, then. It's called negotiation. You don't make your final offer at the outset. You save it until the end.

It seems that none of us really know what the bottom line is at the moment. The latest quote from Phil Brown is that the Club have knocked back all bids so far, as the Chairman is determined to keep Lenny. I would think that if the 'right' bid comes in though he will still go. As for him putting a transfer request in, it depends whether you believe the sources. A lot of the web based sites like Transfer Centre are often run by pubescent teenagers with nothing else to do. And Twitter is always so accurate too. That's a bit disparaging I suppose and a bit unfair as these sites have to be right sometimes. It's looking pretty certain that Bolton and Millwall are also players here but if Wilder's valuation matches Ron Martin's then I still think you will get him. If not, then, as others have said, you will move on to another possible target. Fact of life, we need the money to strengthen our squad. The sale of Bentley and Jackie Payne meant that last season we were able to bring in Simon Cox and Anton Ferdinand. I'm now just going to wait for the next edition of the Southend Echo with words of wisdom from Chris Phillips.;)

So you don't make your final offer at the start or in the middle then ?
What an eye opener

What tutorials do you do ? boorish oafishness for beginners or rid yourself of self awareness in three easy steps
Do they sell well ?

Is this guy in the category of those players you mention i.e. McGuire, Lowton etc. There's only us and Millwall interested as far as I know. How do you rate him... what's your opinion on Ryan Learnard based on what you've seen?

There's silly money banded about in the Premiership and upper end Championship, but outside of there the market looks depressed with most clubs trying to avoid transfer fees .

Maguire has established himself as a solid Premier league centre half, on the brink of a move to a top club. It's inevitable he will soon earn his first England cap. I couldn't put that kind of expectation on this signing

I think Leonard is being signed because he offers us a different option in midfield. Bash has shown he is more valuable to us in defence, that means we need this type of player.

Player of the season 3 years in a row. That is proven consistency. I'd be excited if we clinched this signing

Surely Bolton can't spend a penny and if he choses Millwall over us then theres something not quite right in his head

I imagine if it was up to him he would be with us now but if Millwall offer more then Southend are naturally going to accept that bid .

The only thing Millwall can boast over us is that its closer to Southend, so if locality comes into play then he might choose to stay down south. There's no way he'd join Bolton over us as they are still in a financial mess, and we're a bigger club with a better team that play football unlike Bolton.

I was reading this on the BBC site yesterday, about Udders and Reading.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40021067

Seems that, despite their tiny Rotherham-like budget, Udds still managed to shell out their record transfer fee at the start of the season - £1.8 million to buy Christopher Schindler. Not only that, but that fee was only the 43rd most expensive one in the Championship last summer!

A sign of what we're up against.

He's just scored the penaly that's won them around £180 million so probably worth it?..

Meredith's a decent signing for Millwall. But if we wanted him we would've got him. Stevens will be better.

They're signing Tom Elliott from Wimbledon too, a decent free transfer. We should've had him in January instead of Hanson.

I don't think Leonard would choose Millwall over us. He seems like the type who'll put football reasons first.

Definitely. Seems a really decent player, as does his centre-back partner.

Kachunga also cost them over a million.

So you'd think we'll be making at least one biggish signing.

I've seen a few people say that Hudders budget was the same as Rotherham. They've spent a few million over the last few seasons.

I'm thinking they must have had similar wage budgets. Cos Rotherham's signings were pretty low-key, apart from the loans they brought in (Izzy Brown, Scott Allan, Tom Adeyemi, etc.) - don't think they made a signing for anywhere near £1m.

Agree, Spending a million on a player is modest by championship standards. I would guess Huddersfield's transfer budget this season would have been in the botton 8-10 of the division and they'll have still spent about £5million on fees. With teams like Newcastle and Villa spending around £50million and having massive wage bills, the pigs have spent about £20mil I think and have a big wage bill... I think we might see a couple of players coming in for around £1-2 million and that'll still be fairly modest by the standards of the competition.

efl72 rumours are saying he wants to go to Millwall now because its closer to where he lives, so who knows! but Fuck him its that's the case.

Twitter said we had a 3rd bid accepted. Today Millwall had a bid accepted and he wants to go there because it's closer like you said. Apparently bids of less than 1.25 million won't be accepted.

All of the accounts are extremely unreliable.

I know, don't know who to believe, looks like we will find out in the next 48 hours for sure. Disappointing in that we seemed to be the first to try to sign him. Maybe we should have gone in with a better offer to start with. Hopefully he will come up to Sheffield and give it a good think over first before making a decision

Although I don't particular remember him, but I did remember Samir when he played, thinking how good he was.
