Was it painful for him?
Don’t think we’ll bring 2 WBs and 2 wingers in. 3 players for those positions at most (possibly 2) IMO. Maybe Stevens, a winger and possibly one who can cover both WB and the wing.

It's been really, really true though. You don't like it; that's your absolute prerogative, as indeed it is to say so.
In turn, I find repeated favourable references to Bassett, Montgomery, Warnock, Jagielka and many others extremely tedious, so I say what I think about them. My views are shared by many more people than Bladey Blades would like to think. Not that that matters much. I have been arguing for minority causes all my adult life so have no need for the comfort blanket of approval.
An Internet forum (and I ❤ this one by the way) is not a representative sample. This one is full of people beguiled by Bassett's Hoof and knowing, sadly for them; no better.
Our fellow fans have some very parochial, and at times, very silly, attitudes towards football in general and United in particular. I point them out, on the vast majority of occasions, in a light-hearted manner, in the spirit of my literary heroes.
You could count the amount of threads I've started in the last five years on two hands. So I can genuinely say "you started it..."

I had to use Google three times to fully understand that.
I need to read more books.

They don't really though do they ?But they appear frequently in black and white. If they didnt, I wouldn't exist.... I'm the Nathan Jessop of S2.
We all do, Steve. The internet, whilst essential, has done lasting harm. Rather like Bassett, come to think of it...
Would love us to try and include Jackson Irvine in the deal somehow, but he's probably a little bit out of reach for us now.
Goodn call and I don't see why he's out of our reach, Us or Burton? unless premiership/top champ teams come in for him.
Already linked with McLaughlin and Stevens and bid for Thomas and O'Shea.
Tom Elliott, George Baldock, David Wheater, Nathan Mendez Laing are great frees in League 1 if we're stabilising. I'd sign Baldock and Elliott for the squad even if we're really going to go for it.
I would even raise the stake/steak further and go a full Fray Bentos.Completely agree, Irvine should be absolutely within our reach. I will bet a kidney that we finish above Burton next season.

To be fair to pinchy he has a good point.
Bassett only took us from the third tier to the top tier and kept us there for 4 seasons. Pretty awful record considering those 4 seasons were 4/5 in 40 years we've spent in the top flight. Give me Weir and Heath any day.
Jagielka - awful player whose only achievement is getting 40 caps for England.
Warnock - Awful manager who has consistently had the audacity to perform mircales and save clubs from relegation. Fair few top flight promotions on his CV too. Give me Clough anyday.
We've had little to cheer about in my whole lifetime, 36 years, however the above were all synonymous with success whilst at United. If you see Bassett as a negative, then I'm surprised you're still around.
Usually helps if show the full discussions. CW wants 24 players in our squad, he believes the 3 Transfer Listed will go.
Means we are looking to sign around 9.
GK
RWB
LBW
2 CB's
CM
2 Wingers
Striker
Just guessing here but:
GK - Etheridge from Walsall or Smith from Northampton
RWB - Baldock at Mk?
LBW - Enda Stevens
2 CB's - EEL, Mcfadzean, Jags
CM - ???
2 Wingers - Holmes, Thomas, Carey
Striker - Danny Ward
Without wanting to interfere or suggest I know what he means as I may be off the mark, but as I understand it the point is, that Bassett was right at the time for what was needed. He brought success on the meagre budget we had and on the whole did a great job.
However, once we were up there competing with the big boys we should have been looking at adapting and becoming one of the big boys rather than the plucky, skint and hardworking underdogs bringing the big boys down to our level. We didn't invest wisely and continued to buy cloggers to replace the cloggers!
We didn't make the most of our situation then (board as well as manager to blame perhaps) and we didn't when we went up under Warnock, except that time I believe the Chairman DID see the need for change and adapting to become a big player in the premier league. He just hired fuckwits to try and do it, starting with that Robinson bloke!
However....the belief of some is that our club cannot compete with others around us, the Basham thread being another example. We shouldn't be worried that Wolves or Norwich look at our players....or that a certain player won't come to us on loan from Chelsea because we are new in the division while the other clubs around us have been steady there for a year or two.
It's that inferiority complex that is wrong. This club IS a sleeping giant as proven by the support it can generate even in bad times, and the facilities that are second only to perhaps the top 6-8 sides in the country, and the academy that is now PRODUCING international players as well as many good top level players.
Fans should be proud of this club and realise that ANY player currently in the championship or lower would see our club as a huge club and one they would want to play for...and that's before even talking about the superb manager we have and great football we play!
Totally agree with Bassett, however it's hardly his fault. He did the best he could for as long as possible with no money.
The point about Basham is a good one, however Norwich have shit loads of money through parachutes and regular flirts in the Prem and Wolves have a billionaire as Chairman. These guys can throw 25k a week at Basham no problem - can we? Even if we could, would you justify it?
Hell the pigs haven't been in the Prem this millennium and they're throwing 50k a week on players. We are nowhere near that level, no matter how big a club you think we are.
And that's the point mate, let them chuck those sums at him if they want because he isn't worth it.
If he thinks he is, then he can go find it elsewhere. ( I don't think he does mind) We COULD pay players those sums of money....not many of them but we could if we wanted to. But that causes all kinds of issues in the group of players as the pigs found out with the diving Argie.
Our owners have the finances behind them to match that level of spending. BUT! As we have found out through paying like that in the past, it isn't the way to do it and it doesn't guarantee anything. So no, I wouldn't personally justify it because it really isn't necessary to succeed in this league. And Km wouldn't make those kinds of mistake again thankfully.
As it is, there are enough good players out there where money isn't their primary consideration. Brayford being a good example. Sure, they want a good wage, but most are quite grounded and look beyond pounds and pence. And on my impressions of Bash, I feel he is in that mould.
Have you seen Long play behind a stable defence? I don't think I ever have, mostly just Neil Collins and Jay McEveley.
I suppose it's not what we think that matters though. Do you think Wilder will be looking to get rid of any of our keepers? My main point is that we have 3 already. I'm not saying we can't improve in that area, just saying I can't see room for 4.
What a bloody shame we had to sell Ramsdale. If he stayed I don't think we'd need to entertain the idea of a new keeper.

Different centre halves and that would be the best team we could get I would imagine.
The difference if Long played behind a stable back 4 , they would pull him out of the shit more than a poor back 4 . The young kid at Sunderland plays behind a crap back 4 but does look class . Long unfortunately is not good enough and is bordering on a maximum league 2 standard . We do need another goalkeeper to give Moore a run for his money .
Selling Ramsdale was good business for a untried unknown . Long need to be out in loan .
Don't know enough about Eastwood to comment .
Long career in professional football could be at a cross road this season coming .
Pickford is different class and the fact that you called him out for he made the odd mistake he made this weekend is harsh. He is undoubtedly the best young English keeper out there, as will be seen this summer with all the massive bids for him.
