Has been released according to the Alan Biggs show. It was news to me - don't know if it's old news.

Very old news ........... along with fellow current pros Graham Kelly, Shea Gordon, Nat Crofts and Conner Hall.

Thought Kelly was rated highly, just shows managers coming and going it really can be difficult for the young players.

Whilst I'm genuinely sorry to hear of any young player being deemed not good enough/surplus to requirements I'm pleased it's happened quickly and seemingly efficiently. I look forward to seeing an equally efficient cull of all those Wilder deems irrelevant for the challenges that await next season in the first team.

This is all now driven by CW.

If a young pro is not looking like being part of the first team squad in the medium term then they are not being kept on to make the numbers up in the 23s.
This means next year first year pros like Semple, Ty Smith or Hallam know they have a genuine chance to progress over the next couple of years.
It also keeps the number of pros at the club at a manageable level hence keeping to a budget.

Harsh on the lads released, good for the ones being signed.

Wilder appears to have a different approach to young players than previous regimes in that he appears to favour offering 2 year pro deals with the option of a 3rd obviously weighted in the clubs favour as at the end of 2 years they have performed and progressed it will cost anybody to take them away from the lane but if they haven't the clause won't be activated everyone offered a deal this season Graham, Slater and Ty Smith are all on this deal....good management to me players are not under the pressure of having to worry about being released anytime soon so can concentrate on developing their game with a bit less pressure and if they don't then the fact they've had 2 years should hopefully limit the number we release in future that don't go on to make....fingers crossed!!!

That sounds like a youth policy to me! I'm confused now. Woody assured me we hadn't got one...
:)

Great post Totally agree. It seems that at all levels Wilder is integrating and putting together a club that from top to bottom will operate cohesively and seamlessly.

I don't mean this maliciously but so it should be! Only the best can make it and very few of real talent slip the net. Those few will find a way back if they have the strength of character required. It's no favour to anyone to make it easy at youth level, least of all the lads themselves.

Ah, I thought he was talking about his old-fashioned wireless.

Think the only wireless he had was the internet connections from third world countries he never tired of telling us lumpen proletariat he was visiting.

I think his heart's very much in the right place. The brain, on the other hand...

What's Diego up to these days?

Surely it's more about not showing potential to make it in the first team than budget? These lads must be on peanuts in the world of football?

Look. I'm in it to enjoy it. I watch a lot of SUFC U18 & U23 football. Of course, I want some of those players to kick on & develop & get into the First Team. But, if I'm giving up my morning or evening to watch a Sheffield United XI play, I will enjoy it in the moment. I'll happily say to anyone ..... watching Diego play at U18 & at U21 before his injury was fantastic entertainment. A United player, at the top of his game, putting the opposition on their arses, week in, week out - superb. He didn't kick on. That's the way it goes. I loved every moment watching him.

Is it right that all but 2 of the U16s have been released?
