4 games to go and still Wright has yet to taste defeat in a blades shirt
Have we ever had a player do this before
Cant say I know of one, it truly is an amazing stat

and a small mention to Hanson , not nearly as many games but still unbeaten

Lucky charms or just good

There may be players who have a similar record, but over far fewer games.
What is impressive for Wright, is that from the moment he and one or two others started playing the whole shape, effort and effectiveness of our side changed for the better.

Individually, nothing special as a player. Not got a great touch, not gonna spray passes 40 yards or carry the ball out from the back, not quick and not physically big and domineering.

But what he does do well is defend. He knows his job and that of those around him, he communicates that to team mates and controls the game, and gives his all in the process. He reads the game so well he almost seems to know what is going to happen so he can be there to intercept it or clear. He IMHO has been the real leader of the team this season. What an inspired signing by a manager who clearly knew what he could bring to our club.

If, and it's a big if he looks to be replaced for next season, I really hope he hangs around the club. I'm not usually one for sentiment but in this case I think his experience and manner is such that he could be a real inspiration and source of knowledge for young players. Certainly wish that my son had his experience to learn from as he begins his football career as a defender.
But hopefully, he will at least get the chance to play next season and I believe he will do well too. Ok it's a bit quicker, but there isn't a huge jump in quality that he couldn't deal with.

I got the impression he was brought in as a squad player because of his supposed injury record, but with the knowledge of his leadership qualities on and off the pitch. All managers rely on players they know can do a job, unseen or otherwise, but to kop this diamond is quite remarkable.

Really hope he goes the season unbeaten as a just reward for what he actually brings to the t-e-a-m.

A credit to the club, himself, & CWAK.

Sometimes in football there are players who are not the most skilful, pacy or whatever else. But they are inspirational leaders who read the game and can be incredibly valuable in a successfull team.

Others in my time who were in this bracket were ;

Trevor Hockey
Bob Booker
Paul McGrath

Would love it if JW could get some recognition for his acheivement.

I think you need to take Paul McGrath off that list :)

edit. He had skills in sacks full

I'd throw Craig Short into the mix for that too. Yes, his lack of pace was exposed on a couple of occasions but I thought he brought a stability to the defence through his organisational skills and reading of the game that was absent when he didn't play. I imagine that like Wright he also played his part off the field in the team spirit displayed that season.

I would like to add Morgs to that list. I never thought he would make the step up to the Premier League but he did. Disaster when he got injured and that as much as anything else lead to our relegation from championship.

I am a massive (sorry for use of word) Wright fan and I think he will make the step up for next season.

When Wright came off the bench against Halifax in pre season I reported back to my brother that he looked really ropey. But I also told him that on the back of that performance we would be in for a long and difficult season. What do I know

If you look at the difference in character of the side from this season compared to last season, it can be encapsulated by comparing the leading figures we had playing CB.

This season - Jake Wright - Positive attitude, encouraging his teammates, communicating to his team in the right manner.

Last season - Neill Collins (or Jay McC to end) - Mouthing off to his teammates every time he did something wrong. Muted otherwise.

There are clearly two young centre halves in Semple and Graham that would learn so much from Wright being at the club.

You always get midfielders, forwards and keepers at clubs to help young players in those positions. Its refreshing we could now have one to help the centre backs coming through

I've always thought that reading the game well deserved to be accepted as a technical quality in football. For example, Maguire's reading of the game from a young age was one of his better attributes. As unique as his composure on the ball Kante, Makelele and Mascherano's reading of the game were/are their better qualities. Wright compensates for his lack of physical qualities with his excellent reading of the game. He's our glue

player of the season for me
we simply don't look like losing when he is on the pitch

Here's a stat to back up the "just good" argument.

Average goal conceded per 90 minutes with Wright on the pitch = 0.8

Average goal conceded per 90 minutes with Wright not on the pitch = 1.4

Given that's across a whole season, it cannot just be luck, surely.
