My dad has a season ticket and the seat next to him has been empty for around 18 months now,not for sale online for games so it must be a season ticket but the owner doesn't attend for whatever reason.
My dad is disabled and I take him to the majority of games so I rang the ticket office to ask if it isn't renewed for next season can I have 1st refusal to sit with my dad to be told no,it's first come first served and they don't know when the deadline day is!!
I told them it would be ideal to sit next to my disabled dad obviously, again told,no its first come first served!
Is this another case of red tape which has happened in the past, surely this would not be an issue given the circumstances for 1 seat in the ground?

Can understand their position, Brownie. You don't know the circumstances of the other ST holder and none of us would like our ST sold without our knowledge. Maybe you could ask the ticket office to deliver your request for you via a letter - preserves their address etc? Just a thought.

I asked for 1st refusal to purchase the seat IF the present fan doesn't renew.

I think it's red tape and lack of common sense really.
Like the time a few years ago I went to the ticket office to buy a seat in south stand. You had to show ID and I forgot it,they had all my details on computer, tickets bought etc, they wouldn't sell me a ticket and I even showed the lad my blades tattoo on my arm!:)

Have you tried speaking to ticket office manager??

I'm sure there must be another gangway seat somewhere with an empty seat next to it

Just take two tickets in the next available row behind or in front

That's what I was meaning. Something nearby.

Not sure if you have a season ticket brownie or if you're a part timer☺. The ticket office girls have got enough to do at the moment, but there has to be someone in authority who can help. Why not phone the club and explain the situation. If the ghost supporter keeps his seat, tough. If he doesn't renew and it goes on sale, ask him/her in authority to give you a call the moment it becomes available and reserve it for you. It's not a lot to ask.

I had the same problem Brownie,I even showed the girl in the office the blades tattoo on my dick..she threatened to call the police..!
Some people eh ?:D

That's what I asked said no its first come first served.
I have had season tickets in the past back to 1981 but due to work shifts not had one for a while now, although I will only miss 2 games from before Xmas to end of season.
Can't see the problem here really

brownie4583 i get your point, I had to wait a few years to get on the row of my mates.

However, I'm not sure how you expect the club and ticket office to manage your request. It won't be the only request.

Given that the likelyhood is that we're going up and tickets are cheap, demand is going to be high.

The season ticket initiative is that the lowest price now will be there for renewals until we know the division we're going to be in, so as well as dealing with early renewals the club are dealing with a bit of a promotion hopeful fuelled frenzy for tickets. Home gates over 20k each game and away games all sold out.

Do you expect the club to keep a first dibs database which they check on a regular basis to see if a seat is available on the off chance someone doesn't renew

It's one of them situations where the club can't win whatever they do.

If they allow first dibs then someone will no doubt complain about favouritism.
They'll say they were the biggest Blade ever in the 70's and 80's and they would expect fairness with a first come first serve system.

I reckon the club will say "wait for us to announce the renewal cut off date"
"Then contact us immediately and we'll sell you the ticket", this puts the responsibility back on the customer.

I had a season ticket in the same seat on the kop from around 2001-till the end of the final Clough season.

I sat in my seat around 4 times during that time, used to just stand up at the back.

Reminds me of when we were in the PL and played at Old Trafford. A colleague who works in Manchester got me a ticket in the huge North Stand. When I got to the seat - just before KO - it was right up in the gods and the players looked like Subbuteo figures.
Looking round, I saw a vacant seat bang on the halfway line, about 20 rows back. I wandered down and spoke to a guy in the next seat.

"Excuse me, but is that seat taken?"

"Yes, well no. It belonged to my wife but she's passed away."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, but haven't you got any friends or family who could have used it?"

"Nah. They're all at the funeral."

Must say, as someone who has criticised in the past, the ticket office staff have much improved and been marvellous in the past couple of years. OK buying by phone usually involves hanging on and on waiting. But buying online is relatively straightforward. I renewed our season tickets in a nano second

What about the Newcastle fan who asked about the availability of two seats next to him that had never been used. He was told they had been sold as season tickets, anyway come boxing day a fella and his lad turn up and take their seats, and he asks why they had not been all season to which fella replied "our lass bought them as Christmas presents and only gave them to us yesterday ":)

Not saying you should do this but if you were seen as say a carer for him they would have to sit you together as it would be a requirement for the care giver to be close to the person they are looking after, I did this for my Mrs old man on away games, its never an issue although I guess season tickets is slightly different.

I thought there would be no problem as my dad is disabled tho,as I said earlier,it's red tape and no common sense
