There was always trouble ,everytime ,before during and after.Yes that's the one, at the time it looked as if he'd hit it cleanly. Bert can certainly remember it going along the ground.
Boothferry Park was always very handy for the railway station.

Yes, I remember that night match in 1971. It was re-arranged from the previous Saturday cos Hull were playing in FA Cup 6th Round match against Stoke (Wagstaff gave Hull 2 goal lead before Terry Conroy and John Ritchie (2) made it 3-2). Reece scored early on and it was such a bad tempered game so midway in the 1st half, the ref blew his whistle to half play and called over all the players to the centre circle then telling them to "cut out" the rough stuff. Ken Knighton, John Kaye and Chris Simpkin were still kicking our players for the rest of the game. Simpkin equalised in the 2nd half before Wagstaff's late winner. 42,000 plus crowd it wasWas the return match at the Lane the one Knighton got his team to kick us to bits, somehow got away with it and beat us?

I went to watch our reserves at the Lane the following Saturday and looking at the Pavilion scoreboard our promotion chances seemed to be more remote as our 1st team were losing 2-0 at QPR. At the final whistle of the reserves match, the crowd were in a miserable mood leaving the ground but then there were some noises behind us and there were some excitement/confusion and I saw a tall Blade signaling with his hands "2-2" so we rushed back in the ground to make sure by looking at the pavilion scoreboard. 2-2! The start of our unbeaten run (22 games) until October!I can remember leaving the Lane and next morning at school feeling like it was the end of the world after losing this game
Both teams in red and white stripes....i guess!A picture from my late father's collection. Not sure when it came into his possession but looks to be circa 1950s. The writing on the back of the photo indicates it is from a united vs stoke match, with the result 2-2. The caption reads "J Smith (badly winded) receives sympathy from friends and foes'. Can anyone shed any light on the match, date etc? I presume it is looking towards the kop.View attachment 24742 View attachment 24746 ?
October 23rd 1948. Jack Smith is the keeper. Dick Young (who was Carlisle's coach, trainer also manager in the 1970s) is wearing the number 5 shirt. Think Albert Cox is next to the ref. Spotted Dick Young straight away. The clues were "2-2 draw against Stoke and J Smith" so I looked at the bible for matches between 1946 and 1949 (we were relegated that season). Freddie Steele is a Stoke legend and played for EnglandHow do you do it Silent?
Quite remarkable.
October 1973. Lost 2-1. Rodney Marsh broke McAlister's leg and Denis Law netted in the loose ball to equalise. Woody replaces McAlister in the net and conceded the only goal (an own goal by Dearden) in over 160 mins as an emergency keeper.
