Well done Michael O'Neill. Sensible decision to not drag Lafferty away just so he can sit on the bench. Not many International managers would be as considerate:-

<< Daniel Lafferty has been placed on stand-by for Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Norway later this month after Michael O’Neill, the Group C hopefuls’ manager, admitted he did not want to interrupt Sheffield United’s push for promotion from League One. Lafferty, the former Burnley defender, hoped to be selected for the tie after impressing for Chris Wilder’s side this term.

Although O’Neill omitted him from the squad which hosts Lars Lagerbäck’s side on March 26, the 47-year-old explained: “We watched Daniel a couple of weeks ago against Bolton. He’s very much in the equation, but we left him on standby. “For players at that level of football, they have to miss their club games, so I don’t want to bring them for the sake of bringing them along. If they come, I want them to have a real opportunity to push to start.”

United, who are eight points clear at the top of the table, are scheduled to face Oldham Athletic a day before the meeting at Windsor Park. Lafferty, aged 27, last represented his country during a 1-1 draw with Wales a year ago. Athletic’s Ryan McLaughlin has been called-up and is expected to miss United’s visit to Boundary Park as a result. “With Daniel doing as well as he is and Sheffield United going well in their league, I didn’t think it was right to name him, but he is on standby,”

O’Neill added. “Depending on what happens between now and meeting up next Monday, we’ll see if he is an option for us.” >>

Common sense being applied in football. Well I never thought I'd see the day. Well done to O'Neill.

Sensible approach. As I said a few days ago, it would be nice to see Chris Coleman bring Freeman into the Wales squad at some point as a back-up to Chris Gunter. He's scored twice as many goals this season as every other Welsh defender combined.

No wonder he's been considered if they watched him against Bolton, he was faultless.

Not only could we have an advantage with the Oldham player being called up, but I'd imagine Conor McLaughlin of Fleetwood (their captain) will be called up too, because he's their undisputed first choice at right back.

Looks like another LWB appearance for Matty Done Saturday, Lafferty been put into the Northern Ireland squad....

Gonna miss the game on Saturday now

FFS!

"Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?"

Done or Hussey then?

Haven't seen this anywhere else yet, so it's that rarest of animals. A James Shield scoop!

Think I would prefer go 4-4-2 and put O' Connell at left back.

I'd rather see JOC on the left .

Changing formations, and taking JOC away from that back 3, in which he offers perfect balance would be too much upheaval for the loss of one player.

Done has filled in there already this season, on a boggy pitch we'll need grafters and he'll do that all day.

Done gives away countless fouls when he tries to defend, in a 3ab formation Hussey is would be better, he can cross the ball and his defensive ability whilst not great is better than dones

That's made my mind up, O'Connell at left back and 4-3-3.

Would've gone like that anyway for this game, on that pitch.

I feel for Hussey, absolute non starter, and as a result overlooked in January for loan opportunity.
