From the BBC

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell will not be following up his interest in Wigan's David Cotterill.

The Blades had been linked with a move for the Welsh striker following his loan spell at the club last season.

But United manager Kevin Blackwell told BBC Radio Sheffield he will now set his targets elsewhere.

"We are struggling to get [the deal] going, but I've enquired about 25 left and right-side players and we will only pick one up if we think it's right."

Now personally I don't see where it states he gives up, it's just an over-exaggerated headline from the Beeb

we want him
he wants to come to us
wigan will sell him
we wont pay what they want

If they "will" to sell him but have an unrealistic valuation as it appears... they'd end up starting the season with him still on the books. Meaning they will have to re-assess the valuation and sell at a comprimise or he'll be available to loan. That or rot in their reserves.

Perhaps Blackie is losing patience with them and calling their bluff?

Personally, as much as we could do with signing a winger, i'd rather not be held to ransom.

Like Robbie says and I said earlier though, nowhere is there a direct quote saying Blackwell has ended his interest.

its not really being held to ransome, they want most of the money they paid for him, some could see it as us holding them to ransom, at the end of the day, he is worth 2 mil in my humble opinion, i dont think its a factor with us not having the money, just not wanting to spend it

My thoughts exactly Foxy, Wigan have spent big this summer and they are one of the only clubs to be over-stocked in the midfield department.

They are no doubt playing hard-ball to try and recoup as much as they can to balance the books but as the season edges closer and they face keeping him in the reserves while paying his first team wages they may well change their tune.

I think 1.5 million is a fair price and we are doing the right thing by calling their bluff; even if our lack of pace in midfield does have me a little worried.

At the end of the day, all fans have opinions.

But none of us have the facts about the ins and outs of the deal and demands.

Whatever any of us thinks about the deal (and how much people reckon he is worth) it's irrelevant.

I would rather favour the cautious approach than chucking money at the team and us ending up like Wednesday or Leeds, or heaven forbid, Rotherham and Luton.

And it's always easier to spend £2million of someone else's money ;)

I don't think Cotterill was the deity personified that some people are making him out to be. A midfield containing him, Tonge and Squinn would leave us woefully open to attack.

For £2million I would want a consistent performer. Cotterill was not a consistent performer.

I assume you've been sat in negociations and heard their valuation then?

We are the buying club, we shouldn't just go along, ask how much they fancy and whatever it is chuck money at them. It's also pretty difficult for us to hold them to ransom, given that we just want to buy their player.

It's all well and good you saying he's worth £2million, but first off, this £2million is a mythical figure... Then, what wages is he on/does he want? what signing on fee? any relocation costs? what is he like off the field? etc etc

It's not as simple as saying "oooh, we like him, paper says £2mil, here's £2mill jobs a good 'un!"

Whether or not we have got the money, we should only do deals that are deemed good for us, not others.

i do get what your saying, and no one knows the ins and outs, but i just feel we should have really signed him (or should still sign him), a right winger was more needed than a striker, but we went and signed one for the same price wigan want for cotts (apparently), just bites away at me that all, i really rated him, and im sure i speak on behalf of most people when i say i would love to have him back, i think he was quite consistant after his few games, and he had some crackers (Norwich, Burnley) in particualr

You can't be quite consistent, you either are or you aren't :)

Cotterill had some pretty ineffective games in a Blades shirt too... Preston away for example.

If he only plays 75% of the time, then surely 75% of their asking price is fair?

;)

But we got rid of TWO strikers, and replaced them with one.

I'd like to see Cotterill come, but it's not up to me - and you never know what's going on behind the scenes, as various people have mentioned before. Perhaps it's all part of Blackwell's kidology? We'll have to wait and see.

Also, who's to say that one of these 25 other players we're looking at won't end up being better than Cotterill?

Positivity matth, I like it :)

The majority of fans seem to be having an all-or-nothing approach to this deal. What if we do play £2million for Cotterill and (touch wood he doesn't and all that) breaks his leg on the first game of the season? We've then spent a chunk of money on a player who can't play... whereas if we'd have got him cheaper or gone for someone else cheaper, we'd still have the capability to get someone else in.

It is all ifs, buts and maybes and I do think Cotterill could do well for United... but he doesn't guarantee success and neither does spending loads of cash.

I've seen a few wizards whilst on loan at the Lane in my time, who turned into complete turkeys as soon as they signed permanently!!
For some, playing for a contract is a whole different attitude to playing with a contract!

Not saying that Cotterill is one of them, but you never, ever know! All transfers are a gamble of some degree and with all the information we're never party too, the package wanted by Wigan and the player maybe assessed by Blackwell et al as too big a risk.

you mean targets like Cotts I assume? you know the one we've been in discussions about all summer? :p

Sadly, its not as simple as writing a shopping list and going out to pick them up.

Still, I assume it must be Terry Robinsons fault that they want too much money?
