Did you all become hooked to this great club .i went to belle vue first being from donny and it was shit .
my school mate recently moved from sheffield said come to bramall lane with him and his brother,bearing in mind this was a cup game against altrincham in 81/82 .the game aside which was terrible .i stood on the kop and thought i will be doing a life term here.
 



1967, catch 41 bus from hackenthorpe, walk down to the rent office to pay the rent my old man gave me when he came off nights from british steel, ( what a Fukin queue that used to be).
Enough change left to go to the 4 seasons cafe for a plate of chips/ bread & butter/ cuppa.
Then on to the match, would get there about 2-o'clock, and stand behind the white wall on the kop, nearest John st. Wouldn't change anything, happy days.
So in answer to the op, around 66/67 because my old man was a blade. I was 12.
 
Simple as. I was the first of a fifth generation of Blades in my family.

My lifelong affliction started some time in 1994. Night match, forget the opponent, sat on a packed Kop with grandparents. Remember being taken aback by those floodlights, which I still maintain were a shame to lose. Alas, technology marches on.

Having only seen one promotion in my lifetime I'm praying to the football gods we do it this year. And make a bit of history along the way by winning four divisions.
 
both my parents families support blades there was no other club i'd rather support
 
Started watched United with my uncle, who used take me to the away games in the 4th Division to keep him company following my Grandad being to ill to go. I'm sure his illness was brought on by the previous season's relegation. I probably went to more away games than home games that season. I was privileged to be at the Darlington game for the celebration though. What an experience that was, only bettered by the Leicester game in all the last 30 odd years watching the Blades.
 
1971.
My mum bought me 2 pairs of jim jams, one red n white striped, the other in the evil colours. I loved the red ones and it stuck.
Someone, maybe my grandad pointed out that I must be a Unitedite and not of the other persuasion. I hadn'nt a clue what he was on about but went with it as at school on Wedn**days, it was maths......and I therefore hated that day of the week. From then on there was only 1 way to go.

A ' Hacky Blade ' !

I used to go in the Blue Bell down there back in the day . A load of Blades in there if memory serves me reight ;)

I remember some heavy pre-season sessions in there with an ex player of ours ..... he was off his fuckin head then too :eek::D:D
 
When? First game in April 1973 v Palace
How? I'm not really sure. Grew up in Wath and mates supported various teams like Dingles, Dirties and Liverpool.
I was football mad, tennis ball in pocket for kick about at school then home for tea and back out and kicking a ball about until bedtime.
My mates kept trying to get me to support the team they did but I needed a connection. I honestly can't remember why one day I said I support Sheffield United.
Then my dingle supporting mate suggested a trip to watch The Blades. Can still remember walking on to the back of the kop for the Palace game (only just made the kick off).
I instantly felt at home and knew that this is me for life. My mate must have felt the same as he's was with me at Oxford on Tuesday.
44 years of ups and downs, thousands spent and we couldn't have made a better choice. Some amazing memories, with more to come.
Up the mighty Blades!.

Was surrounded by grunters at primary school, and very nearly went to see them before I was really "in to" football at a young age. I shudder to think that I could have become one of them.

When I was 8, back in late august/early september 1994, my uncle, a lifelong and die-hard Blade, offered to take me to a match at BDTBL, and I accepted. 10th September 1994 I arrived at the lane for the very first time, to see newly-relegated United take on Bolton. From the first moment I walked out onto the Kop, I was hooked. It was like nothing I'd ever experienced. Even now, 22 and a half years later, I can still remember that first moment clearly. The smell, the atmosphere, the noise...it's making the hairs on my neck stand on end just typing this.

We won the match 3-1 as I remember, and that was it, I was a Blade for life. I'll always remember a bloke who was next to me at that match, saying to me at some point in the game, "we'll be back in the premiership soon lad, dunt tha worry about that." Then it took another 12 years of ups and downs before that goal was achieved.

Some are born to it, some come to it later in life. However your own personal story/addiction began, once it has hold of you it's impossible to stop.

We're pretty much the same age and I also went to a Pig-dominated school in the early/mid 90's.

It was a shit time with United on a downward slope whilst the Pigs were very much on top, but having to put up with their bullshit strengthened my allegience even more.
 
My Uncle Fred, get this, used to say he was a Blade, but when the Pigs got to the Cup Final in 1966 he claimed he was one of them :eek:

He was too mean to buy me and my brother any Xmas presents and must have got some free tickets because one Boxing Day he took us to The Sty. The game was played in such freezing conditions that the Southampton goalie threw up in his 6 yard box, Eustace missed a penalty and it finished 0-0. A bloke shouted at him at full time for trampling on the seats in his haste to get out.

On the way home after the match he stopped his van on Queen's Road and said he had some business which wouldn't take very long. He was probably shagging someone else's missus because he was gone for over an hour and we thought we were going to die of cold while we waited for him.

Bastard.
 
I started going to BDTBL with my dad and mate,our dads used to take us to alternate home games,my first game was a 2-0 win against Stoke in 1975.
Got my 1st season ticket in 1981/82 season and been going ever since,work permitting.

I'm 31 in April if that helps narrow it down.

Once I'd caught the blades bug, being the underdog was definitely part of what cemented me as a lifelong Blade. Also, a lad from my primary school who was a pig in his younger days later changed allegiance, and went on to play regularly for our reserves, and almost made it into the first team (think he was on the bench for a couple of cup games at one point).

Edit to say that I'm eternally happy I wasn't watching football when THAT semi final happened in 1993. It's always been my defence when they try to gloat about it. "I wasn't there mate, before my time."
 
It was beaten into me as a small child...
 
1979, Cup v Burscough. A reward for playing for school (first match for our year). Taken by my Uncle and his mate. School won 1-0 and the Blades won too, the start of many years of watching us be alright sometimes and not great at others. Rather that than Rovers or Dirty Leeds like many of my friends.
 
My dad took me to my first match in about 1967 he would sit me in the corner of the turo tavern coke and a bag of crisps while he chatted to his steelworker mates then off to the match where he would put me above the middle walkway on the old kop .hooked from day one .utb
 
27/04/1971 Cardiff City (H) W 5-1 - I know, how lucky was I! A 10th birthday present from a pal and his Dad who were season ticket holders. I got so excited I dropped a cup of Bovril over the back of the man in front of me. 42,000 under floodlights. After that match, how could there be any other Team? UTB
 
My old man was a Blade. He named my first teddy bear Jimmy Hagan. I grew up within sight of the Lane...well, I could see it from the golf course above Bingham Park. It was especially magical during night matches (we only went on the Saturday in those early days). I could even hear the crowd from up there.

All of my friends were Wednesdayites so I'd go to the Sty on alternate Saturdays, stand on their shitty open Kop and root for the opposition. It was there I learned one of the most important lessons of my life thus far. It wasn't just that they were incapable of recognising the blatantly obvious fact that our TC was worth at least ten of theirs (I mean, Tommy fucking Craig for chrissakes!); it was also seeing that completely unjustified arrogance and sense of entitlement at close range which taught me that if you scratch a Wednesdayite, you'll uncover the grunter beneath. No sense of irony whatsoever and as for self-deprecatory banter...a foreign language to the lot of 'em.

Well, I couldn't be friends with a bunch of grunters, could I? They got ditched just in time for the magical 1970/71 season, still the high point of my life as a Blade. I don't think it is possible to explain what it was like to witness that side in full flow to those who are too young to have seen it. Suffice it to say that there wasn't a single player in the team who I would have swapped for any other. It was that good.

Will those days come again? Perhaps not, but at least the current set up seems to be heading in the right direction and they've given me reason to hope again.

Onwards and upwards. Once a Blade...
 
At the age of 4 my Dad took me to Millmoor in 1957 too see us in the County cup which in those days was well supported and although I cant remember a lot I always know I was a Blade through and through and then 6 years later I was attending all home games and then caught the bug to away matches at age 13 and hardly missed any since
 
From birth, my whole family bar a wayward sister were all devout Blades.

Just a quick story, Irish guy I know moved in with his uncle straight from leaving school , his uncle lived in wincobank, pat one Saturday noticed man ure were playing at swillsboro, and his Irish hero of that far off era one George Best, he walked from wincobank to the sty, after the game he walked home, his uncle asked where he had been all day, he said to watch the football, went on to say to watch man ure vs wendies, his uncle without blinking caught him a good back hander which sent him cartwheeling across the room then told young pat "there was no football in this city today boy and if you mention that team again I'll ship you back to Ireland straight after you get out of hospital.
True story, this was sometime in the 60's btw
 
All of the above is what makes us special.

There are not so many proper clubs left any more. Liverpool, Newcastle, Sunderland, Portsmouth..:

I came late in 71, aged 17, having flirted with Sunderland and Leeds but as I was about to move to Sheffield I went to the 5-1 Cardiff game in 71 and have never looked back.

This season has been in the top 5 in all that time. Here's hoping that this dawn is new and not false.

Anybody who says that Sheffield United is only a football club doesn't know what they are talking about. An obsession, a reason-to-be, a social focus, almost a religion.

Blades don't come and go.
