my mother had my eldest brother in an air raid shelter, shes one of the women of steel , whos statue is outside city hall now
shes 95 now and teetering on the brink due to a catalogue of medical issues, and they wont operate on her as she wouldn't survive anesthetics
but she has an eidetic memory of the war years and regails all and sundrie with them

forgot to put shes a blade too and was in a box for the scunthorpe game as a guest
when I rung her on the Monday after she asked me what the score was.. drew 1-1 I said , thought it was she said, couldnt barely remember saturday but could tell you what shes she wore on a trip to the Lyric cinema with her pals in 45

Forgetting the score isn't old age, it's a defence mechanism for any long-suffering Blade. You could have told her we'd won!;)

I gave it a like as an acknowledgment from one Balde to another. My mum's dad was a miner so protected occupation but was also a part time ARP warden in Netherthorpe.

Different times and so far aware from our phone obsessed twitter/facebook-shite generations. God knows what would happen if the Russians seriously invaded Europe. Loads of Facebook 'dislikes' might have less effect on their tanks than expected.....

Those women were made of sterner stuff back then. My mum at nineteen drove an overhead crane at English Steel. My ex mother in law, at the age of 15, worked down the cliff. She lived at Wisewood but had to walk to work the morning after the blitz cos the trams weren't running. Two inches of snow now and nobody can get to work.

Snap, my mother drove an overhead crane at Hadfields, loved it and says it was the best job she ever had. Luckily the Germans never bombed while she was on night shift the sirens did go a few times but the planes were on route elsewhere.
