Coutts or Carruthers?

The players have to get used to Carruthers too ,it was noticeable that the players didn't give him the ball in tight positions on Saturday ,Coutts is a great outlet as he can receive the ball under pressure and he will retain it. The players know this ,have confidence in him and use him all the time ,he is also very good at finding space.

I would start Coutts and Jayo.

Recently with Coutts and Duffy both playing we have been too safe and less positive. Change either or both of them though at 60-70 minutes, depending on the game situation.

Having said that, both Coutts and Duffy have upped their game a bit since Samir and Jayo arrived - so feeling the heat a bit certainly seems to work, so let's carry on with them all feeling that they have to do something special to keep the shirt.

Duffy's first half v Wombles was his best for a while.

UTB

Coutts for me too. Don't think he's been at his best recently but the knowledge that there are replacements on the bench who CW is happy to use will hopefully bring him back to his best.

Good to know that we have options if any of the midfield are under par.

Coutts for me ,thought Carruthers was 'Flecklike'rather than bringing anything different. I wouldn't change the 3 in the middle or the wingbacks ,or the front 2 or the back 3 or the goalie from our team which has got us where we are.

To be fair, I don’t think we can say a particular front 2 (or back 3 for that matter) have got us where we are because they’ve changed so much. Done has played the most games alongside Sharp so “not changing” could mean playing those 2 but Hanson and Lavery have also very much played their part alongside Sharp and both are now ahead of Done for me. McNulty and Clarke have played a bit but can’t say they’ve contributed much to date. The back 3 has always been 3 from 4. For me, Wright and JOC have to play and then one of EEL or Bash on the right side of Defence (think I’d go Bash v Scunny, EEL v Bolton).

I agree about sticking with Moore, Freeman, Lafferty, Wright, JOC, Fleck, Coutts, Duffy and Sharp though.

Exactly, and we've rested players which added to our already impressive fitness should stand us in good stead. They didn't have that luxury yesterday as they're the ones chasing and need to put their strongest team out every single game. Let's tire them out and go for the jugular.

They have been making changes lately. I note Van Veen and Bishop were both on the bench last night although Morris and Madden played. Having brought in Toney and Davies they are more able to rotate up front these days.

I don't mind which one he picks out of the two but my guess, looking at what happened with the substitutions last night is that Carrutters will start on Saturday and I won't mind that one bit personally.

I think it will be the same midfield who started against The Posh, Carruthers, Fleck and Duffy.

Carruthers can keep hold of the ball aswell as Coutts and also penetrate the opposition more which is what I think we'll set up to do on Saturday from deep aswell as further forward.

I think CW and AK will set us up to obliterate Scunny to make them think the autos is almost unassailable for them.

What evidence do you have for this about Carruthers , he didn't show it at Peterboro

Ive seen him a number of times Sitters and he's impressed me everytime. The Posh game was his first start and he still impressed me whilst recognising at the same time he's still getting used to playing with them. People are making out he wasn't much cop at P'Boro but he was always looking for a forward pass and we didn't really look like conceding with him in there, he did more than people are making out at P'Boro, defensively and attacking.

To start Saturday?

Wasn't at the game last night but Coutts has been 'the man' pretty much all season in their with Fleck...however, I was impressed by Carruthers at Posh, brings something a bit different to the squad with his energy, aggression.

Decisions, decisions....
I thought Carruthers was a bit off the mark at Peterborough tbh. Obviously got talent but not quite on his game yet. So Coutts - no brainer for me!

It's far too early to say yet. We'll probably only know how good Carruthers can be for us when he's fully fit, settled in the area and has had a decent run in the side, and that might not even be this season.

Did anybody really think that Coutts was any good before Wilder and Knill had time to work with him? He's been a revelation this season, but so might Carruthers in time.

I'm with you on this. I actually thought he had a decent game against P'boro.

It's not easy to come into a new team and adapt straight away but I thought he looked good. He faded a bit as the game went on but that's to be expected when you've come back from injury.

I did.

Not read through all of this thread, but I'd go Coutts. Don't tinker with your known best team for a big game like this.

I really did though ,and it pissed many off on here at the time ,only took my crash helmet off about 3 months ago
There was always a decent player in there wasn't there?

I just wasn't ever sure if he was 100% fit or just not up for the challenge, I don't think I ever saw him make a clean tackle. I suppose it was a bit of both but he's proved me wrong definitely.

Yes Gray, but what did Wilder say to bring this turnaround about? Did he encourage? Did he suggest a personal approach that would allow the 'hidden' player to escape? Or did Wilder whisper in Coutts' ear that he had photos that he'd make public unless Coutts pulled his finger out?

Coutts ability was never in doubt in my mind last season. It was his apparent lack of heart, desire and effort which irked me.
CW obviously dug deep to discover some heart and desire remained in Coutts after all.
Definitely the conductor of our orchestra!
