Blades olive branch for Hendrie

Lee Hendrie could still have a future at Sheffield United, insists manager Kevin Blackwell.

Blackwell has told BBC Radio Sheffield that Hendrie will return for pre-season training with the slate wiped clean.

"He comes back as a Sheffield United player," he said. "Maybe he'll flourish under a team that's doing well."

Hendrie, who has been critical of his time in Sheffield, moved to Leicester on loan in February but was unable to prevent the Foxes suffering relegation.

The 30-year-old midfielder has made clear his intention to stay at Leicester on a permanent basis. But Blackwell says Hendrie is still contracted to the Blades and is ready to welcome him back in the summer.

"I'm aware of his comments that he didn't like it at Sheffield," said Blackwell. "But he's contracted at Sheffield United and he will do everything that's required of Sheffield United unless he moves on."

The first thought with Hendrie would be to tell him to look for the door marked "Do One", but if there are no clubs interested in him, and let's face it, Leicester are hardly going to want to pay big money for him now, then if his attitude can change he could still have a part to play.

I know we'd be better off with players who want to play for Blackwell, United and us the fans, and if, and it's a bloody big IF, he wants to play for us then why not give him a go? It's not as if he's a crap player, or a Chinaman foisted upon us to keep Chengdu happy (Hao Haidong and Li Tie) is it? And if he doesn't want to know, then fuck him off.

It just seems pointless getting rid of a decent player, which Hendrie is, because of things in the past.

and he also showed a lot of passion he had for the blades when we played QPR at the lane
he scored and went to the crowd celebrating, also when we were loosing he was hyping up the crowd so i do like Hendrie and i think him and Speed in the middle would be good

Would like to see Hendrie have a chance under Blackwell, who knows he might be a totally different player under Blackwell. Look at Michael Brown you don't need me to tell you how he turned out when he came to the lane.

Maybe I'm being ultra-cynical, but this is nothing to do with the fact that he has two years left on his (reportedly) expensive contract, is it?

Frankly, despite his innate talent, I'd let him go. He wants to go and be nearer his family in the Midlands. I'd like to think he'd be important for us next year, but currently I just don't see it.

I think that you are pretty much spot on with that assessment; by making it known that Hendrie has no future at Bramall Lane we only leave ourselves open to another Horsfield scenario (i.e. loan after loan with us footing the bill).

I am of the same oppinion about this, I can see BB's point, he was signed by the previous manager (really wanted to call him something else but that is history now) and lets face it he hasnt been a shining light of a player. We have all heard the rumours about the wage bill being cut and if he is on big wages then he would be an obviouse choice. But lets face facts, this is still a business and noone likes to loose money, so who in there right mind are going to pay enough money for him to off him from our books and onto theirs when his reputation is evident to all

Couldnt agree more SEB, i think that discussions have taken place, and as i mention above, it will have been decided to "Give him another chance" on the basis that we would need to agree a substantial transfer fee for him in order to get some money back that he has raped out of the club. I think that he will be given chances during the summer to prove his worth and saty fit. At this point Blackie will then either be impressed with him and give him a shot at first team football or alternatively (and more likely) ship him out on loan with a "First Option to Buy" clause for the season.

Like people have said he does have the potential however i think that his ego is bigger than our beloved club
