Yes - described as one of the most one-sided cup defeats of all time; they were a rough bunch (not for the first time, and certainly not the last). There were 60,000 to see the game, care of a temporary stand built on the cricket pitch! Despite that - no crowd problems at all (no segregation either) - happier times for our national sport. When opposition players scored, they were often applauded by the Blades fans - though to be fair we didn't ever put our hands together for that lot.......

The opposition didn't even have to score to get applause. Crowds would put their hands together just for decent approach work by the opposition. I don't know exactly when it stopped - late-seventies, early-eighties, possibly - but it was a nice feature of football in the sixties, when I started watching.

remember the cup run the year after when we lost to leicester after 3 games never forget my father in law was at elland road and always says we were robbed there when doc pace scored a perfectly good goal in last minute think it was dissallowed for either hand ball or offside we would then have played the magnificent spurs double winning team in the final can remember being in tears as a kid that night we lost at st andrews

Don't get me going on that one. The ball went in off Pace's chest and the goal was disallowed. He politely showed the ref a mark on his shirt which suggested the goal should have stood. Repeated the other week for Billy v. Walsall.

I didn't realise Gratton was there for the start of the 59-60 season. I thought it looked like him, honest! The thread about Denis Gratton started by his daughter(?) does not include this picture - might be worth adding it. I am not tech-savvy enough to do it.

Terry Hillman

Wally Gould played five 1st team matches for us before moving to York and then to Brighton. Played in South Africa from 1967 to 1977
