January budget - how much should it be?

If we have to live/spend within our means as you say then how do we spend around the 500k mark? Not saying you are wrong but you say live within our means then that says we should not be bringing anybody in and should be selling due to our losses this year.

Not really, the lowest option available was 0-500k, not my limit but the OPs. I'd suggest the owners are comfortable and have budgeted for acceptable losses this year (probably around the £2 million mark its been sat at for the past few years) and therefore spending should be within that budget. Given the sales, paying up of contracts/incentives to go and removal of players from the wage bill, I'd be surprised if there is greater than 500k available to spend.
Expecting £2 million additional investment, in this league, at this time, is unrealistic and shouldn't be the expectation of anyone.

Whatever we need to go up. That could just be loans. It depends on the calibre of player he can attract/

We need:

1 x RWB to either cover or replace Freeman
A replacement for Chapman who would ideally be a loan

If no one leaves, it's kind of tricky for him to bring people in. Especially with the lack of a loan window.

Injuries are always a worry.

We really need cover in CM but it depends how he judges Whiteman.
The same could be said for Semple and CB
LWB would ideally be stronger but we currently have two people under contract there.
A young CF on loan who can come on and make a difference. Difficulty is, we already have Sharp, Done, Clarke and Lavery there. However, if we lost Sharp for a long period we'd potentially be in trouble.

For me, what it comes down to essentially is either bringing players in for the rest of the season to get us up or players in who can succeed in the league above. It's an either/or for me. It depends what's out there and what Wilder can get.

If McCabe said "Ok then, I'll spend £1m if the fans match it pound for pound". Using a nice round 20k average gate, would mean each attending spectator chucking £50 in a bucket on entry to the next game. Would the 24 big spenders be up for that?

McCabe's decisions brought us to where we are. Sure he's had some terrible luck along the way, but he's also made a series of howlers.

If things had gone differently (not least the 07/08 season), he could have cashed out and made a huge profit. To give an example Swansea went for a reported £100 million this season. I don't think anyone would begrudge him turning a profit under the right circumstances.

Even with all the money swimming around at the top end now, anyone buying into football is more likely to spend wads of cash than make huge sums. Such is the life of a football club owner. You'd need to question the business acumen of anyone who invests in a football club with an expectation of making money (not suggesting McCabe did have such an expectation).

Unless any incomers would be more than good enough in the Championship I would prefer we just loan what we need to get over the line and then reappraise the whole squad thereafter. The LAST rhing we need are a few permenant signings on 3 year deals who won't cut it at a higher level.

Agree with all of that. The position we are in with the squad we have, plus a couple of strategic loans, is more than adequate to get us up.

What we don't need at the moment is 2 or 3 new players in the team and the inevitable "gelling" period that goes with it. Anyone remember the start of this season by any chance?

Presumably your £300 was 'donated' to see 23 games.

Bit of a surprise you didn't want to own a football club though, but probably best to leave that to someone with deeper pockets who we can all snipe at.

Given that McCabe 'chose' to own us and we give him no credit whatsoever for stepping in after the Mike McDonald debacle, then how much should he spend?

As none-football club owners, presumably we can still demand he spends £1m or £5m or more?

Not a bad example to pick but things didn't go differently in 07/08 did they? We are where we are.

You can take the view that 'morally' in your own mind, we don't owe him due to poor decision making. Unfortunately in the real world, legally we do.

He's far from perfect and has made some abysmal appointments, starting with Robson. I think I'm correct in saying he still believes Robson could have done it if we (the fans) hadn't forced him out. Having said that, he stepped up when no-one else would,

Without him, we may not be here today.

I'm not related to him and don't really know him. I've had a couple of short chats with him at AGMs where he cheesily uses the "we are all Blades" line with monotonous regularity. Having said that, I'm thankful we have him. It really could have been far worse........

In January, money is not usually the answer. The first priority is to keep 'our' players; second, keep the loan players, if possible. Then it is a matter of recruiting, if Wilder wants, some of the following: Young players from higher leagues, on loan; players in last 6 months of contracts who can be bought relatively cheaply; good players from the league below, or from clubs in our league who have financial problems. We are unlikely to be able to buy good players from higher leagues, or from clubs in our league unless they have money problems. Good as it would to acquire a good player to cover for Duffy, it is hard to see where you would find a similar player willing to sit on the bench.
For me, the number one requirement is for the Board to trust Wilder's judgement, and if he feels a player will improve our promotion prospects, they should look at his record so far, and back him up.

Good thoughtful commments there Hodgy ! Agree that its necessarily the amount of money as per Brayford signing which was totally stupid and just a PR stunt to appease the fans, We could have spent that 1.5 million on 2 or 3 very good players and been much stronger that just one marquee signing !
