How exactly would introducing standing reduce capacity?

Apparently because for health and safety reasons (to avoid crushing) they cannot have as many people in the same square footage as they can when people are seated.

I've had a quick look and can't find the actual guidelines used in this country for rail seating so I'm only going on what someone at the Club told us.

They said that regardless, with what happened across the city, the council's SAG is extremely risk-averse and will not entertain the idea.

Doling out safety certs without bothering to check anything. Who would have thought that might ever be an issue?

That is some seriously nonsensical thinking, even by our own club's standards. I don't even know where to start with how bone-headingly stupid that all is.

There are no guidelines for safe standing in this country because at the moment it's outlawed. It's not a thing. So how could they possibly have arrived at that conclusion?

And refusing to even entertain the idea because of Hillsborough is just...wow. Wow wow wow.

It's incredible that 'Hillsborough' is still wheeled out as an excuse not to entertain standing areas.

Not one person would have died if the fences weren't there.

There are no longer any such fences in British stadiums.

Really complicated.

I just wish two things would happen.

Firstly, start being realistic about the safety element rather than pretending there are any genuine risks and stop giving ourselves unnecessary hurdles to overcome.

Secondly, funding. It doesn't need to be an issue. So much money is generated by football in this country, mainly by the PL. Why not put something back in to football to improve the overall 'product'? One of the key areas we lag behind Germany in is the matchday experience/atmosphere, so standing areas should be encouraged. The clubs who want to install standing areas could be given financial assistance to cover any costs. It would total a tiny percentage of the revenue generated by the PL.

Genuine like.

Someone suggested earlier that the lack of atmosphere is due to the paltry away followings we get in this league and that home support would bounce off a large noisy away crowd and reciprocate. That didn't seem to apply during the Spurs match, the kop only came alive after our equaliser in the latter stages of the first half.

It does feel as if the decades long culture of noisy partisan crowds getting behind their teams is fading away.

Last thing we need is artificial gimmicks like that stupid band at that unmentionable place or naff wannabe DJ's playing cheesy songs after a goal

I've been going since 82 and there has never been a time when we've given unconditional support to our team on a regular basis. One off games, yes. Runs of games heading towards promotion, maybe.
GCB mentioned how we'd sing 'sing up shoreham' when it was quiet, which is true, and sometimes it would set off the singing but more often than not, there'd be a few singing 'up shoreham' a couple of times and then it would fade out. Occasionally, you'd get 'John Street, John Street give us a song' but I went to plenty of games where the atmosphere was a bit crap.

But it was still better than Hillsborough because they had no roof. Some said they did tests for the moon landing there as it had no atmosphere.

All crowds have gone a bit quieter over the years. So it's normal that ours will too.

There's nothing to moan about on the pitch so i've got an idea, let's moan about something off it.

I'm going to hazard a guess that all those moaning about the atmosphere are ones that never try to get any songs going at all or even join in when someone does try to get one going.

We are in very good form whilst 'the library' doesn't sing so we don't really want to change anything do we now! :)

Our away support is very vocal and if people want an atmosphere this season then I suggest they try to get to some away games or start some songs themselves if it isn't too much hassle. :)

Oh wow. Good job they don't have the same H&S police overseas, could easily cut 20000 off Dortmund's home gates

At a guess that would be if rail seats were introduced which I believe are larger than normal seats.

I was thinking about this, I can't say that any of the terraces I've stood on overseas have been of the rail seat design, so I can't really compare like for like. But further to that, are the H&S powers that be serious that, if we had a sold out Kop, everyone sitting down = fine, but if something was to happen like, say, one of those goal things that happened four times at the weekend and everyone stands up as a result, that is a health and safety risk and shouldn't be allowed? That might explain Adkins' strategies to some extent

If you believe Pinchy, he is the one who leads from the front of the Kop..

I'm moaning about the atmosphere, and yes, I do my bit to add to it. I'm a regular at away games too.

Is my moaning acceptable now? :)

You do your bit to add to the crap atmosphere? Do you hold up pictures of dead kittens or something?

Absolutely acceptable alco but we both know that it takes more than one or two people to get songs going and an atmosphere created. It's a group thing and some people are being very hypocritical slagging the atmosphere off of our fans as though they are devoid of having to create the atmosphere themselves, and no I don't know for definite but my guess is that there are people on this very thread doing just that, slagging the atmosphere off but not contributing to it.

Ultimately, it's their prerogative and I love a raucous atmosphere myself but after watching the shite we've been served up in recent seasons I can understand the nervousness and reluctance for a lot of our fans to let themselves go a bit.

The atmosphere at the Lane has progressively worsened as the number of pubs around the ground have declined .

Fuck spending money on safe standing areas , get some more pubs opened .

More pubs = more pissed up blades . More pissed up blades = better atmosphere . More pissed up blades also = more ale chucked abart = more angry blades = more hostile atmosphere .

simple :)

Yes but will these pubs sell mustard or have air conditioning units in them, if no then keep the fuckers shut.

Air con units and mustard are merely subsidiary issues .

The choice is simple ..... wading ankle deep in piss , covered in mustard , puke and fuck knows what else with a black eye and thick lip cos you were staring at some ones air con unit . Coupled with advanced tinitus because we'd taken the roof off with a raucos atmosphere ..... or , sit there thinking you need your ears syringing cos you've heard nowt .

I know what I'd prefer .

But it's not about slagging anyone off. If you sit towards the back of the kop, you can clearly here several vocal pockets of fans in different areas. They regularly cancel each other out by taking the wind out of each others sails. A simple, unreserved seating area could cure it.

People suggesting that's some sort of organised sanitisation of football, that would be rejected, are over thinking it. The fact is, the atmosphere at most games is shit. It's not a dig at anyone, just a cold, hard fact.

Doing nothing (is this really the best we can hope for?) has at best tracked this, at worst caused it. I can't understand the objection to some simple trial.
