What a day that was.
Only seemed like recent.
Will never forget the scenes at the end carrying Bassett shoulder high round the pitch.
A truly great day for Blades fans.

Will it happen again at the end of this season?

I'd never bothered watching their game until I did this but their defence was a shambles. Plus, that Forest team could play a bit when the mood took it.

An early Christmas present.

Hadn't ever seen the Wednesday footage, never realised they'd initially thought at the end that Luton hadn't won.

Quite a gracious Atkinson interview when asked about our promotion given he must have felt appalling – other managers might have snapped back that it was irrelevant.

No, Dave Bassett has retired and Filbert Street doesn't exist.

Before the game racist Ron said Forest would want the Pigs to win as they would get more revenue than a game with Luton.

Brian Clough got wind of this ...the rest is history.

There was some idea post season that Sunderland wouldn't come up due to financial irregularities and Wednesday were campaigning to stay up in their place. As it was they still went down and another side came up. There's footage of various Pigs whining about that and Big Ron was less than gracious then. True, though, on the day he carried himself well.

It was actually today's opponents Swindon who were banned from coming up. They beat Sunderland in the play off final but the Mackems were promoted regardless, which was particularly annoying for Newcastle, who finished higher in the table but lost at home to their bitterest rivals in what, in the end, turned out to be the promotion decider. Eric Gates scored both Sunderland goals at St James's Park if I recall correctly.

I remember when we played Sunderland at home in our 89/90 promotion season, mid-week game I think. We lost 3-1 and Gabbiadini got a couple. Tons of mackems at the lane that evening and the noise they made was unbelievable.

Slightly off topic but here's Newcastle's tribute to Sunderland boss Peter Reid.

Wouldn't have thought so KB. I can't see us replacing Wilder with Bassett any time soon

I had just started a new business and missed loads of games that season including that one. My mum lived at the end of Low Edges and we were there for dinner. Walked to Chesterfield Rd with my daughter to watch the coaches arriving back. Could hear the singing from inside and stood watching as a double decker was swaying side to side coming up Chesterfield Road.

Posted this somewhere before.
Best day of my life.
After we got home we were in the White Lion on Chesterfield Road and there were some snorters in there. There was an uneasy stand-off round the bar football table until one Blade suddenly started singing
"Oh the Forest went to Hillsborough and they beat the pigs, yer down Ron,Ron, Ron, Ron yer down Ron, Ron.
Oh division 2, oh thats the place for you, oh division 2, yer down Ron, Ron, Ron, Ron yer down Ron, Ron"
That broke the ice :D
