Sheffield United have been rocked by news that Harry Chapman, their on-loan midfielder, suffered a potentially serious injury during a freak training ground accident

Assistant manager Alan Knill confirmed the England under-20 international returned to Middlesbrough before yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers after damaging an ankle membrane last week.

Shame as I fancied this lad to go from strength to strength as the season went on. The one silver lining could be a pathway opening up for David Brooks.

“It’s not a great injury, the medical staff have told us that,” Knill said. “We haven’t really got a timescale to be honest but we think it will go into January and then we’ll take things from there.

“The door to him isn’t closed though. He’s an exciting young player and it’s not shut for both parties. We spoke to Middlesbrough and they were delighted that he was here.”

Is there enough there to be hopeful that we've not seen the last of him this season?

I'd be happy to hear it's going to be 7/8 weeks at this stage. If it's longer term we'll need to make a signing we wouldn't have otherwise had to make.

It could be a big blow to us because I'm sure he would've got better and better in the second half of the season and possibly become a key player.

I think we need to look at Prem clubs, see if they have any similar young, flair/explosive players they would be willing to loan us - Our style this season will make it easier to get the better young players, I would have thought.

Lloyd Isgrove is one we could look at. Quite similar to Chapman but not as much of a goalscorer. Was on loan at Barnsley last season.

I think we will be doing.

The big question if it's more like 12-16 weeks is whether the option to cancel the loan sits with us, Middlesbrough (or both). We might want to reinvest the wages for someone else in January if we can.

Perhaps we could come to an arrangement where Middlesbrough cover his wages while out injured, but he's still registered to play for us in the event he recovers at say end of Feb/early March.

Maybe we can keep within the European free market without paying them any money or allowing free movement across our borders.

;)

Hopefully he could book over the worse by the end of January, a couple of months to get back to fitness and then back to us for the run in?

The good thing is we should know in 5/6 weeks if he's going to be ok for the rest of the season or whether we need to replace him before the window shuts. Fingers crossed as he gives us something different

Undoubtedly for the lad yes but for us not so sure, he is a talented player of that I have no doubt but I feel CW was struggling to find a position for him since we went 3-5-2. Maybe CW will be able to reassess now and bring a loan / perm player in who will suit our present system for this season.

Good luck to Harry hopefully see him back soon.

I think he could have easily played up front/off a striker, replaced Duffy (he was our best cover option) or played wide in the 3-5-2 in certain games. I think his quality would've dictated that he got in the team at some stage.

On the bright side, this might just eventually work in our favour. The lads injured til April, then hes gunna need to get up to speee after such long lay off, prob take him til pre season, and he wont have been getting noticed at all by his current employers and might just slip under their radar. Hes half a year older, no nearer the Boro team, and they might have moved on with other younger talents in the Boro set up puttong themselvea in front of him in the pecking order. If we have got promoted and have a bit more cash knockin about for squad players and fees, we might be able to pick him up on the cheap.

Dont think we would have got him long term in the current circumstances but football is a fast moving picture and if a young un is out of the frame for a period of time he cn quickly become yesterdays man and be surplus to requirements. Id be well happy if we could pick him up for a bargain price as i think he had some genuine latent talent.

Would piss me sen if we got him for a song in pre season and he turns out to be better than £5m Adam Reach who looks wank for the pigs.

Proper serious injury though, once ankle ligaments go they are never 100%, the fact he did it innocuously also doesn't bode well. Let's hope he can return to 100% fitness but very likely he will be prone to twisting that ankle through out his career.

I hope so! I think he'll be the next big thing coming out the Academy. If he's good enough he's old enough and he's more chance of making his mark in League 1 this season than the Championship next!

He might have to wear a special boot? Still be faster than Hammond though!

Gutted for the bloke, aswell as us!

Luckily for us, we have a chance to change our fate, where as he doesn't as it stands.

Good luck to the lad, he will well and truly need it with that sort of injury.

Only problem is, I think his ideal position in our formation would be Duffy's role so he still has to try to get past both Duffy and Scugall (and possibly even Basham as we could push Fleck up into that role).

I'm absolutely gutted for this lad, he was a breath of fresh air around the place and starting to grow into his time at the Lane. He was a game changer and a fantastic option to have on the bench. We could have really done with him for the second half of the season.

Unless the plan is to try and get him should we go up then send him back. Get someone else in who can make a difference. No time to be sentimental this season.

Thankfully, I think Wilder will know this.

In my opinion Chapman will never be seen at SUFC again.

He was always a stop gap years signing to give the squad a little something different.

Now he is injured he wont be back.............. I always felt he was hampering Brookes development so now its time for Brookes to kick on.

I always think he was going to be something a little bit special, for a short period like said above. Then destined for time at Boro or a deal with a big club. Agree to getting Brookes in and around the side now, but there's a bit of a gap between the two, Chapman was more ready now, you can see he ought to be class, if he fully recovers. I'd also like to see Whiteman get more time in the side, but obviously not in the same role.

I bet the lads gutted, just as he was finding his feet in this god damn league, shit happens to him.

Bury game. It him and Lavery that changed that game. They carried so much threat that it allowed others tho do more from midfield. I would have loved to see more of him because he has so many assets to his developing game.
Thanks for the all too brief memories Mr Chapman, Merry Christmas and good luck for your future.
