View From Bradford (Part 2)

I was there yesterday in the Bradford end, behind the goal. In fact, I imagine I'll be on the highlights, the one not celebrating when Bradford score!

A couple of things have come out of yesterday, besides the game which was magnificent for a host of reasons.

However, firstly I have a new found respect for footballers. Let me finish.... obviously you will see Billy's celebration for the first goal, which might be seen as aggravating the crowd. However, the constant wave of abuse given to him before the first goal was awful! So many people calling him every name under the sun whenever he got near the kop. That's the side you never see on television and you will only see the celebration. However, I would ha e done the same if you got the abuse he did!

Second half, Moore suffered the same fate. He had 45mins of being called everything and having bottles and sweets thrown at him with an alarming regularity! I've never sat that close to the pitch before but I say fair play to them for dealing with the abuse so well, particularly Moore who did nothing other than just clear the bottles and sweets away when he got the chance.

Never sat in the 'non-blades' end of a match before. It's awful, don't want to do it again! What I will say is, they appear to generate a much better home atmosphere than we do generally. They didn't stop singing for 90 minutes so do deserve real credit there.

It was Bradford's biggest game of the season, biggest team in the division in town, Yorkshire rivals, both near the top of the table, and it turned in to an absolute classic, I'd expect nothing else than the home fans being up for it for 90 minutes. I'd guess they're not like that for most home game, especially when teams like Wimbledon, Southend, Walsall, Oxford, et al are in town. Boot on the other foot and United are at home for the big games, or a game turns into a classic, the Lane would be rocking and much more than at VP yesterday, just ask the Spurs manager Pottechini (sp).

Agree with the rest of you're post, I've been in home end a few times over the years and yes it isn't a great experience.

Most clubs have problems generating an atmosphere these days and I don't think Bradford will generate one like like that in many games this season. I think is was as much about who they were playing, it being a local derby, the support we brought and the fact both teams were pushing for second spot.

I suspect it wasn't quite the same against Southend in midweek.

What a joyous Viewfrom! - great to read it, especially in these cynical times that we live in right now.

I couldn't find a thread to fit this into, but I thought their third goal was technically accomplished. I'd like to think it's possible to appreciate good play, wherever it comes from.

It reinforced the view that there are decent players at this level who could take that step up to the Championship if the opportunity presented itself.

Maybe the case, that is obviously the only game I have to go on, but huge cup games and derbies apart, our atmosphere at home is so flat. Even when we scored yesterday, the Bradford fans just continued to sing and I could hear the blades too often, maybe 7/8 songs in the game. I just don't think our fans make the noise we could do based on the numbers we have home and away.

Loved Macca's post match interview. Whoever finishes above Sheffield United will be promoted according to him :)

I hope it's them. Two very popular ex blades nailing the 1/2 in the league would be momentous.

I'd rather we finished top but hey ho ;)

What a pleasure it's been reading these the last few weeks. Last season was dire, it was downright fucking depressing and if the games and results weren't bad enough, reading the views of Fleetwood, Bury, etc. confirming just how shit we were was the ultimate piss take.

I'm over the fucking moon the way Wilder's gone about transforming our club, couldn't be more pleased for both him and the rest of us hard core supporters. It really does put a spring in your step when we're doing well, and it's a great compliment to the way we're going about it when you see how much respect we're gaining from opposing sets of supporters.

Ultimately I don't give a shit what others think, but it sure does feel good when the rest of the league appreciates just how good we're beginning to look.

A point I've made many times about John Harris' team compared with Bassett's. Curiously people took a quite different view in that context....

CW has done as remarkable job. He inherited a poor squad where Adkins managed our worst finish since 1985. He launched a dramatic re-building of the playing squad, releasing ten players, transfer-listing seven players and releasing three players who had been on loan. Naturally, these changes took time to bed in and just ten games ago, we were rock bottom. Some negativity was expressed about this poor start, but it was more a sense of 'here we go again' rather than directed at CW. After all, we've had enough false promises over the last nine years. Now we stand in third place (4th if Bolton win at Bury tonight :() but - more importantly - we're playing as a cohesive unti with good players still to come in. This isn't a flash in the pan. We're on the move.

my favourite post from them
“They are a good team. Yes they had a poor start, but they are a good team! Why is it always someone must be blamed rather than, fair play?
I for one think they will go up! They are so much better than bolton, millwall, mk dons etc. Fair play to them. They have a good manager and a good set of players!”

Nowt personal mate but I couldn't give a fuck about Bradford or any other in the division. I'd love every game we're not involved in to end up a draw so we sailed up. Bradford can get relegated or go out of business for all I care. Fuck em.

Yes it was our biggest game, of course the atmosphere was going to be better than for v Fleetwood but the VP atmosphere is unusually good compared to many clubs. It all goes back to the cheap ST deals when SmC first pitched up as manager, that deal it attracted 1000's of young fans. Those fans are now late teenagers or older, they are the ones who made all those flags you saw in our kop, it's a pretty good and authentic atmosphere at VP, one that most clubs seem to have lost.

I don't agree with the view that Bradford City played as well as they could, how could that be possible with 4 centre backs, no full backs, and with a system we've never employed before? It wasn't our best 11. Still, it was a very good performance.................considering.

Lot of talk about Billy Sharpe and rightly so but for me the Ebanks-Landell kid was immense ,maybe hang on to that lad if you go up!

You are way better than very other team we have played, I think and hope that you will go up.

Cheers Roygbiv it is good to read that supporters of other teams see the progress of SUFC under CW. A lot of positive comments recently. :-)

Agree with you on the atmosphere at VP, been to a few matches there and it's usually loud, moreso than BDTBL if truth be told. Got a lot of time for City, would love it if both teams went up, the Easter Monday fixture could be a hell of an occasion if we both keep this form up.

It was a good atmosphere, though heavily tinged with a "sing-along-a-football-fan" theme. Credit to 'em, but I wouldn't swap.

I think all the very complimentary comments about Billie Sharpe show what a fantastic season this could be for him/us. Nine league goals before October is over points to around 30 by the end of the season.

And the very obvious abuse from their kop? Fuck 'em. It'll be water off a ducks back for Billee. It shows they're scared of a bloke who always seems to turn up against them. Bernie Slaven of Middlesborough, anybody?

Is it only me that hates that happy clappy contrived atmosphere. Think it must be the drum beat that produces it. Reminds me of Leicester with their bloody plastic clapper thingys. Thought the flags looked good and now we know the fans made them, even better. I also like their Country Road song, gets em going. Nothing better than the Lane when it's rocking. Just doesn't happen enough these days.

Agreed. I'd rather a genuine atmosphere than such a contrived one. I'd rather that than a morgue though.

"Country Road" got on my tits after the 2nd minute, so the tenth minute was unbearable. :)
