'Memries' Memries of Port Vale

Let's think...

That cunt breaking Dane's leg at Vale Park;
A 0-0 in a quagmire at the Lane in '89. Steve Thompson described as "a hippo in the cloying mud";
Deano's last minute winner in '90;
A Vale player punching one of ours in the penalty area, he gets sent off, we score the penalty and win 2-0.

That's about it.

2 recent ones, luckily avoided the boxing day debacle! The FA Cup semi final season when we were 1 down with about 5 minutes to go, Chris Porter came on, scored a backheel and then slipped Murphy in for the winner, just before the equaliser Blades fans singing 'Let's pretend we scored a goal' then setting a smoke bomb off and scoring 30 seconds later, wild celebration for a meaningless goal!

And then the violence at the end of the game there last season, some game for my mate to take his little brother to his first away game too, and I was hanging out of my arse on the way there and threw up at side of the road!

Gareth Ainsworth being set on fire. Oops sorry, that was a dream not a memory

Probably their laughable attempt at hooliganism last year, then shitting their pants as soon as the police line was broken.

It was also the site of my first away match. A 3-2 win in 2000 with Marcus Bent getting two I believe.

...er...anyone?

As it's a quite afternoon on here, I'll chip in. Only visited Vale Park once, we'd been twelve months without an away win until winning away at Oxford the previous Saturday, and then made it two in two weeks with a 3-2 win. Can't remember much about the match other than I think Saunders scored. 1998ish?

A shit house of a ground within a shit house of a town

Rob Kozluk and his crossing ability.

I will never forget to the day I die 26/12/2014 when the snow came away at Port Vale. Took me at least 7 hours to get home to Leeds. And we lost and we were utterly shite! Scarred for life!!!!

This. Not quite as bad as you but 5 and a half hours from Burslem back to my parents' house in Silkstone Common. Wasn't even snowing until half time as I remember. Bloody awful boxing day out.

My first away game 27/12/1983. We'd beaten Rotherham 3-0 the previous day Port Vale lost their previous home game heavily, were bottom of the league. Of course they turned us over 2-0 and we stank.

3-3 draw down there on a Tuesday night back when Bassett was at the helm . Sat in the seats that night which for some inexplicable reason were virtually at the other side of the ground from where the bulk of the Blades were stood :confused:

After the match we decided to have a few beers to let the traffic clear and ended up in " The crafty cockney " which was Eric Bristows pub . Quite what the fuckin hell he was thinking opening a pub in Burslem is beyond me :confused::confused: Could there be a link somewhere with Phil Taylor ????

We played them shortly after signing Marcus Bent and he was outstanding that day. The Blades joyously sang "Thank you for Marcus Bent" (rumour has it Bert was leading that particular chant).

Remember John McCarthy and Lee Mills up front for them. At one point they were a reasonable Championship outfit and think Stoke were lower league. Shows how much things have changed!

It is testament to my interest in Port Vale that it was 1983 or 1989 and I spent most of the game sat on the cold stone terracing reading the Times newspaper. We were that exciting.

Being hung up on by a cabbie number outside Vale Park last year because he assumed it was a prank when I said the cab was for Tom Jones.
The call was going so well until they asked "where you going love?" to which you replied "the green, grass of home"

Don't quote me on this, but I think at last season's game at the Lane, one of their players wore his socks rolled down.

I can't remember which game it was but it must have been over 20 years ago, anyway a quite 'stout' gentlemen, a supporter of our beloved football club, got stuck in the turnstile at Port Vale, much to the amusement of a young Designblade :D

1984 - 3-1 win at home in a night match during the promotion run in. Very sunny night. Cockerill's first goal.

1989 - biggest crowd of the season on an awful night for a promotion clash. 0-0 in appalling conditions.

1990 - Deanos vital injury time goal puts us back in second place after the Leeds debacle.

been a few times edwards rocket goal deanos last min winner, and remember losing to them after they had not won all season or just one win in typical united style if that makes sense

Horrendous journey home on boxing day a couple of seasons ago

Ainsworth the cunt

the 1-3 defeat in front of a relatively empty BDTBL which paved the way for the Warnock revolution.

The year after *that* tackle was god awful too. Drab 0-0, getting soaked in the pissing down rain. Haven't been back since, and don't really want to.

That fa cup 2nd rd game back 4 yrs ago. Was amazing 1-0 89mins gone. Frozen & depressed as we huff & puffed prior 20 mins but it looked like 1 of those days & kept thinking can't believe our 31yr run of always being in the 3rd rd draw is over, & then we got 1, had huge relief thank God weve got a replay & then shaun miller scored in final min of stoppage time. The noise they may have been only 9ish thousand but you couldve thought there was 30,000

But i did feel a bit for the port vale fans, because if you offered them a replay when the board went up for however many mins when 1-0 They wouldve told you to **** off, in a whirlwind they were 2-1 down & out

It was on a Monday night. I was there too. Port Vale used to play their home midweek matches on Mondays

Agreed.

Midway through the second half: "Oh look, it's started to snow."

We got home at half 12 having abandoned the car at the bottom of a big hill.
