I think they should be a permanent fixture in Sheffield. Like Milton Keynes and those concrete cows.

I think they will obviously repeat the exercise next year with something slightly different like Dolphins or Dragons.
It's been a good way of encouraging kids/parents to explore the city and a money-spinner for the hospital.

I did the full trail earlier on this summer with my lad. It was a superb experience and got us exploring parts of the city we might not have visited. I can't see one reason why the club can't buy Elephantom at auction and keep it at the Lane and make it a part of the rich history of the club.

The only reason Elephants were chosen was because during the First World War, they couldn't use horses in the steelworks because they was all used during the war effort, so they used an Elephant called Lizzie instead. Hence why a lot of the Elephants are named Lizzie, Tin Lizzie, Lizzietron 2.2 etc

A rep from the project ws on Toby Foster show this morning, no idea what they are going to fetch. £25 to register to bid though, might put some off.

Next year it has been decided to have giant owls all over the city.

I think that's the point; to stop idiots bidding and then saying 'I haven't got the money' like eBay twats do.

The elephant trail has been excellent. Me and my lad did a lot this summer- I had never been to Forge Dam before for instance or to our Cow Molly farm etc.

Treks to Crystal Peaks (no offence) and Hillsborough PArk (Every offence) were not as excited.

We saw the Hillsborough one at the time of Foriesteri's (sp) self imposed exile/strike and my 8 year old bewildered a lot of nearby folks by banging on the elephant and shouting 'Are you in there Fernando!?'
One of the few times he was unintentionally funny.

We started off doing the city centre ones but then he was desperate to do them all. Saw lot of families with maps going round. One of Sheffield city centres better ideas definitely.

Give your lad some credit DB. I'm sure he knew he was joking. Good one for an eight year old too.

Were it not for the Hefalump trail I would not have experienced rhubarb and custard ice cream from Our Cow Molly. Bloody Ace.

These elephants are a copy of The Barons of Lincoln (not sure if another city did it prior to that).
Quick guesses as to how much a 'baron' would cost you (some looked better than others).

Can't wait all night for a guess; between 8k and 15k, I'd rather United bought another player, besides I may be missing something but if that elephant wasn't stood outside the ground I wouldn't relate it to United at all. And the final point, selling The Barons raised so much cash they are doing it again next year with 'Knights'.

A mate of mine at work is married to a woman whose company sponsored the Sheffield Botanical elephant outsider the city hall and he reckons it cost the company £5k. A few different cities have some similar things, I know Liverpool did it a few years back with something called the Lambannanas, and you mention Lincoln.

I'm guessing it will raise at least a couple of million when everything is finished with these Elephants for the Children's Hospital Charity, a fine organisation that raises money to save the lives of sick children and help their parents. I've seen what they have done at close quarters because my son wouldn't have got one his best friends whose life they saved with their expertise. I've even ran half marathons to raise money for TCHC because I see what a vital service they provide at close hand.

Still if you wish that United had spent the £8k-£15k on a new player, I don't think you have an understanding of how much transfers cost, but if you want to slate something that is raising a lot of money for a very, very good cause and in the process creating something that is making memories that a lot of the children of Sheffield will cherish and look back on with fondness for the rest of their live, then I guess that says a lot more about you than it does about anyone else who has really enjoy the Herd of Sheffield.

We had a load of Gromits back in 2013 in Bristol (al la 'Wallace and ........', not them things you have put in your ears) and they auctioned off for an absolute fortune, I think the cheapest was £16K right up to about £50K, we had Shaun the Sheeps last year, they didn't go for as much as the Gromits but still raised a load of money for the Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal, which is the Bristol Children's Hospital Charity. The Bristol City Shaun looked a right dickhead though, just saying!

We them all the first weekend they was out. We did the first Elephant, The Warrior at Sheffield Station on the way back from the Notts v Yorkshire T20 match at Trent Bridge, and then got up and started at 9 on the Saturday morning and spent a full day at it finishing off at 9pm having spent all day walking round the city, and he still had enough energy to walk furthur, according to fitbit we walked 25k in a day.

We learned a lot of stuff we didn't know about Sheffield, in the Botanical Gardens we fed the Squirrels with some nuts that Mick Rooker and his missus gave us, we fed the carp in Victoria Quays with some fishfood i got from the bar when i decided i wanted a beer stop, and learned loads about Sheffield. We did the Elephant hunt for the last mini herd around Sheffield Hallam university and ended up with Brownie jnr having a careers chat about what he wanted to do when he grew up with a careers advisor, and the last one we did was at Our Cow Molly where we finished off on a baking hot day with a couple of ice creams. We learned loads about Sheffield and it is something we both really, really enjoyed

brownie sorry mate I thought it was obvious it was a joke, the 8-15k gave it away somewhat.

is the Elephant theme something to do with making knife handles from ivory? hence the elephants on the top of Cutler's Hall etc.

but the new uns don't have tusks - not now they don't

There were a load of painted cows a few years back, I thought they moved those from city to city - I think they pre-dated Liverpool's superlambananas which were there for European Capital of Crime.

I`d love us to buy the thing due to the charity concerned, but wouldn`t want to see it in the car park. Shirecliffe maybe.
Or maybe Kev sees it in the entrada of his Brussels mansion.

Another auction which will only be available to the haves with a few thousand pounds of spare change burning a hole in their pocket. Why not hold a raffle for some of them where the ordinary man (or woman) in the street could be in with the chance of winning one? I'd love to get one for my back garden but I couldn't afford to bid the price of a decent second hand car for a polycarbonate ornament.

It's the same with Children In Need. And before anyone says anything, no, I'm not begrudging the charities the money but, in the case of Children In Need, they're as good as saying 'yes, we'll have all of your loose change and the cash you've begged through doing your stunts but you can't get any of the good stuff unless you're one of the wealthy few who can pay through the nose for it'. The man (or woman) in the street's fiver which he gladly donates is as much out of his pocket as Tarquin Farquin's seven grand which buys him something special as part of his donation.

Saw loads and have photos of well over a hundred of them, but if you are planning to go and buy one remember that you can only bid on the big ones, the little herds are going back to the schoolchildren who decorated them, well the schools are getting them back....

Just in case it hasn't been mentioned..

Thats me out of the bidding then, was thinking more £500 - £1000. Thanks for saving me £25.
