The clock strikes thirteen
Took my three sons up for the game on Saturday and for the youngest (5yrs) it was their first; so thank goodness we won and it was a decent game. Got me reminiscing on other first games, my eldest saw a drab 1-0 defeat under Robson at Watford and the middle one a good win at Peterborough under Clough where Ben Davies got the winner near the end. For me it was a 2-1 win at Boro in '85 (I lived in the North East as a child, so it was nearer than Sheffield) but can't remember much about it. Then first home game a 3-1 defeat to Chesterfield under Basset when Agana scored and Stan the Man was sent off. That Chesterfield game was the one that got me hooked, true we lost but great atmosphere and a proper team effort. If nothing else, my youngest lad saw a United team committed to the shirt and to each other. Looking back to that Watford game again that was never the case and where our recent problems all started.
