Agree McCabe bought them but there was an entry in the accounts where United transferred money to Chengdu Blades. Sean will confirm as much though I don't have the source document to hand to show how much.

Anything greater than nil is too much in my personal opinion. That whole venture was a fool's errand. China, land of counterfeit were never going to buy our shirts and any players of a level for SUFC wouldn't have got visas. Any level slightly better and they would have wanted to go somewhere better. We managed a few Chinese players but only well established but you can count the amount of successful Chinese players in England on the fingers of one hand.

It did coincide nicely with McCabe doing business in China.

I'm not openly a McCabe basher, he means well but execution has been poor.

In this case however any dressing as something for United was nonsense, it was clearly much more beneficial for his own business expansion outside of Football.

His prerogative but I don't see how any of the benefits around merchandising or players could ever have panned out.

To be fair to the guy (and I’m normally very critical) looking at how big football has become in China and India (a big reason for the soaring Sky PL deal) I think McCabe was trying to make us market leaders out there (after Man U and L’pool). There was some sense in it. Problem was, I think he kind of just assumed the football side of things would take care of itself without realizing how much harder that would be to achieve post Warnock.


The Chinese venture, Hungary, Vietnamese Soccer Prince, Bryan Robson etc. It was all targeted to making us a global brand. He just negligently failed when it came to producing a product to market.
