Balham,

Agree although Long did ALWAYS seem to concede, most of the time it wasn't his fault.
It was amazing how these long shots would fly into the top corner.

Although I also remember occasions when Long would make a great save buy parry it out towards the centre spot and their attacker would react before our defender and slot in the rebound.

Although I do have doubts in Longs ability I wouldn't blame Wilder for at least giving him a chance.

You never know with a better midfield and commanding defense in front of him he may be less vulnerable
Which in turn should improve his confidence as he acquires more clean sheets.

He might end up being a decent keeper afterall and have a good season.

Clean sheets last season : 13

10 - Long (just read post above!!)

Wigan Ath : 19
Burton Albion : 22

We need to be aiming for something like that.
That's a possible improvement on the points tally by 18 & 27.

Add those on to last season and we'd have finished 3rd/4th with 84 and Champions if it was 27 extra points.

Quick draw on the facts, I haven't taken into account who kept our clean sheets, Long/Howard, but 13, has to be improved on, if we are to challenge for the Top Two.

Is GL capable of 20+ clean sheets this season?
Does CW give him a chance, that's what NA did and look how we started, or does the manager try and bring in a GK before Bolton Wanderers who he thinks/knows will be our no.1 from the start.

Not asking for Neuer, but someone who instills confidence in us the supporters.

Last season, it felt like the majority of times we had to score two just to be sure of a point.

Fair point Mosbo,

Last season I went to almost all the home matches but no away games

And as Lydon says it always felt like we had to score 2 goals to stand a chance of winning.

My worry was the opposition often didn't have many attacks but would still score. There was always an air of panic and worry in the BL crowd when the opposition attacked or had a corner. It reminded me abit of the Simmenson years.

Mental approach, coping with pressure, expectation and confidence played a big part last season and I often sensed that the defence/ gk lacked leadership and character.

Oh you won't have to wait Long for the usual errors;

Failure to command the area. Freezes. Uncertainty. Poor positioning. Sloppy handling. Beaten from 30 yards. Beaten on near post. Dropping catches. Shots blocked back into the danger area.

No exaggeration there. That's George Long.
I thought you was talking about the current England goalkeeper until i got to the end of the post.

We need a first team keeper ,he simply isn't up to it.
He is like Barney says its a communication and a confidence thing.
Long is going the right way and hes well adequate for this league.
I'll take my medicine if it goes pear shaped but Tuftys got it in hand I,m sure.

A decent save in each half and a couple of good takes from crosses. Poor kicking with an atrocious 10 minute period in the second half where everything went in to touch.

Overall, a decent performance.

Wouldn't be surprised if Guardiola makes a change at City.
Hart isn't world class, City with all their money and ambitions NEED World Class...
Goalkeeping in general is a dying profession.
Joe Hart would struggle to get in a non league side back in the day.
They just dont command the box like they used to, flapping at crosses, staying on their line, no communication with defenders.

Hes got some work to put in with his distribution.
Nice to here he caught some crosses

Might be worth watching Walthy's videos. Third division keepers were shit then too.
I always remember Waugh as being OK but at times he flapped around like two ducks mating.

Waugh wasnt one of the Blades finest.

I'm waiting for the footage of Baxter.
Sensational!

Waugh, I thought was decent at the time, compared to what we'd had.
Richardson? Conroy? Nicky fuckin' Johns... that doesn't need a Qmark!!
Terry Poole on loan wasn't too bad.

I agree. We need to upgrade here. Sadly I think we will have to wait until Wilder sees how ordinary he is in real games. Be surprised if we do not have a new number one by Sept time.

We still need another midfielder (Morsy), another centre back and a keeper for me. Also some pace down the flanks. Frightening that Wilde has signed 7 already is it and still need 3/4 more for us even to be a playoff side I feel. Shows what a mess Clough/Adkins left us.
Would just like to dtate the bleeping obvious though. I don't think that Mr Wilder can be blamed for us not putting together 10 - 11 players this close season. I realise that McCabe loves to splash the cash and readily forces managets to buy even if just for the sake of it. However, Chris Wilder doesn't like to go out and buy!! I bet Macca has to force cheques into Wilders hands and says get out and don't come back until you've spent it! :D

Long on the bench as back up .

If and its a big if , Long got a rating of 8 out of 10 consistent we would have a promotion team goalkeeper . Problem is , he can and will fluctuate from 4 to 8 out of 10 , if we start the season with him.

The bloke will cost us games and drop us points . Too risky for Wilder IMO to run and start the season with him.

Glaringly obvious to most and to Wilder / Knill and goalkeeping coach or ask young Travis .

UTB.

How many £ mill is the difference between 2nd and 7th place? Long will cost us that imo. over the season

Yea but look what they had to put up with.
Most pitches were a disgrace after November.
Big physical front men Dougan,Hateley,Mike Fergerson, Osgood etc hurtling in at you with little protection from the ref
And those horrible gloves we used to have a seal with a bar of soap comes to mind.
I got a pair of those Setp Maher (wrong spelling) gloves just after the 74 World Cup they made the ball stick like shit to a blanket

Clough pushed the boat all the way out to sign Shilton at Forest. He always advocated buiding from the back and did OK as I recall.
We really do need the very best keeper we can afford,it`s the most important position in the team.
A large CB with anger management issues wouidn`t come amiss either!

I wouldn't boo him and haven't really criticised to the level some on here do but if he wasn't home grown he would get a lot less slack than he has. Good backup keeper is what Long is no more, no less.

Think it's just got to the point that everyone on forum and everyone who follows Blades , just want a promotion winning team , with winning players in all positions .

After frustration of previous seasons , we have spotted weak areas better than previous managers .

Think home grown players used to get more leeway , but all players are now in the firing line .

Don't want weak second best anymore . Old and new need to cut the mustard from first game to last .

UTB

I remember before he was in the team they said he was a great shot stopper, and when he grows in height he will be a great keeper.

maybe hos relatively late growth spurt meant
he spent most of his early practice not coming for crosses.hence his struggle with it now.

The kicking however is just terrible.

for me a gk is just too important to have a player we hope improves.if it was a youngster on any other part of the pitch I'd give them time but as we've seen in recent seasons a bad goalkeeper can cost you big.
