League 1 Signings

But better to be patient and get the right team?

I can see these players without clubs being patient on the off chance we might want to sign them? If we're reliant on free transfers we need to move quickly.

We were patient under both Nigels. Patiently waiting for Burn, O'Grady, Brayford, Coady, Hammond etc. Worked out well.

You think rushing it will work out better then?
We all want progress but patience is the key whether we like it or not

I just hope that whoever we ultimately do sign is currently having a proper pre-season somewhere. All well and good saying we don't need a team until 6th August. But if we have 5/6 recently signed players walking out at Bolton and some of them haven't had a decent preseason regime they won't be at their best, and may not be for much of the season... Not to mention time to 'gel'.

Patience, but clock is ticking.

Port Vale are going to be interesting next year:

Port Vale

Anthony de Frietas from Monaco
Calvins Mac-Intisch from SC Cambuur
Quentin Pereira from Epernay Champagne
Rigino Cicilia from Rhoda JC
Kjell Knops from Maarstricht
Kiko from Victoria Setubal
Carlos Salerio from Clube Oriental de Lisboa
Paulo Tavares from Victoria Setubal

It could be amazing, it could be comical.

Bristol Rovers are my pick for the team to watch out for. Huge coup keeping hold of Taylor & numerous others + their summer signings aren't spectacular, but they are solid.
I think if Oldham's unproven manager turns out to be capable they might challenge for the playoffs at least.

Peterborough look like they've done some good business too.

I look at the signings some clubs have made and sadly they are of a similiar ilk or even better than ones we have but as we have found before it is not played on paper. Charlton, Oxford, Shrewsbury, Bristol Rovers and Bolton all seemed to have brought in some decent players for this level.

I have absolutely no idea where United will finish. I look at a few teams/squads and there is very little to choose. I would not be shocked to see SUFC anywhere from 4th - 18th this season! All depends on Wilder and how he gets them going from the start. Squad wise even with dross gone, I am not sure we are better than where we were to start last season. Still unconvinced we have a dominant keeper, centre half, midfielder or someone with some power up top that shows centre halves been in a game. I sadly still see glaring holes.

The rest of the division a lot of questions over many teams but I see as strong Millwall, MK Dons, Charlton

On the fringes could be Scunny, Southend, Bolton.

As for a few surprise packets; lets say Shrewsbury, Bristol Rovers and Oxford competing for playoff places with Peterboro and Gillingham

I see a drop off for the likes of Walsall and Bradford from last year but still be around middle places joining likes of Coventry, Chesterfield, Northampton, Swindon, Rochdale

I think the following may struggle; Port Vale, Bury, Oldham, Fleetwood, AFC Wimbledon

My predictions will be fun in a few weeks. Total guesses!

Clubs coming up from league 2 who are usually on a role , to me provide a bigger threat than the teams coming down from the championship.

We cannot take anything for granted in this league and over 46 games you could pick two from ten for automatic .

This season I think Wilder will not be bothered about any team , but will show them respect . As we know , we can be turned over by any team . That's why all those players had to go , they had a losing mentality .

Not a easy league , but others will be looking at what we are doing in the transfer market with great interest .

Agree, their momentum can carry them for half a season and a couple of decent additions in the JTW and a bit of good luck can see them through to the end.

I don't think our players had a 'losing' mentality, more that they tended to come from mid table or lower sides where you weren't expected to win every week.
Players at United have to realise we are the L1 equivalent of Man U where losing at home or losing to 'lower' clubs just isn't acceptable. Winning games is a minimum requirement, winning stylishly is the preference. Players who can't get on board with that should go to Oldham or Rochdale or Ross County where mediocrity is acceptable.

every club in the land starts the season with fresh hope
fans starry eyed and full of hope

well apart from us
some of ours only see the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse pounding down Charlotte Road

On the face of it:

IF we can get Brayford back to his loan deal form we have A top notch RB.

We have another clubs player of the season in Fleck.

We have a player that won promotion from this league last season in Duffy.

We have the leagues best striker in Billy.

Admittedly we could do with a CB and a striker but 4 quality players like the above isn't bad going so far.

I think Oxford may be a dark horse.

There have been a lot of outgoings as well as incoming across the league. I reckon there will be some surprises this year. It's impossible to guess how at least half the teams, including us, are going to do. The consistent teams will go up.

We will be around the play-offs at a guess but it depends how he gets them playing.

Some clubs, Charlton, Bolton included are in the speculative, gamble-on-success stage we were at under Clough and Adkins to a lesser extent.

We are in stage 2 after that, you know, sick of throwing money at a simple problem and getting just a bit pissed off at the numbers!! The "we can't go on like that forever" stage.

Not sure about Oxford, lost their 2 best players. Be interesting to see how that money gets reinvested.

I think the sooner we accept that we are skint the better.

Burton broke their transfer record a couple of days ago paying £300k for Jackson Irvine.( BBCWEBSITE)

That means McFadzean cost less as he was the record signing the week before !!!

We really are skint and shows at what level we are dealing at.

Players in italics I would have thought could make us stronger, but I think that Fleck, Duffy and O'Connel are up there with the best signings in the league thus far.

EDIT: it's just put them all in italics, fuck it then, I'm going to bed
.

Hutchinson
Novak
Worrall
Downing

For the second time, who have you seen more than twice that you want us to sign?

Downing is gash, we are well rid, hence why we didn't offer him a longer term contract. Doubt he'll be first choice at MKDongs.

The quietest, weakest centre half I can remember at Walsall. Think the opposite of Chris Morgan.

Do you not read reports?

MK Dons demanded £500,000 form us otherwise he was going no where.
Funny how they drop their demands when Burton come in.
It was reported that we offered in the region of what Birton paid but MK Dons didn't want to sell to a rival.

Also regards being skint it's all relative.
Compared to PL league clubs we're more than skint but in league 1 we are the richest club and will yet again have the biggest budget, surely that's a good starting point to compete.

Retaining good players is often as important as buying new ones which made me wonder how many Div1 players were on an "upward trajectory". Some assumptions on my part but these look to be the ones that have gone so far.

Bolton - Feeny (Blackburn) Holding (Arsenal)
Charlton - Cousins (QPR), Gudmundsson, Pope (Burnley), Makienok (Preston)
Coventry - Sambou (Everton) Cole (Tampa Bay), Fleck (SUFC)
Fleetwood - Maxwell (Preston)
MKD - Hodson (Rangers), McFadzean (Burton)
Oldham - Coleman (Huddersfield), Renshaw (Everton), Wilson (SUFC)
Oxford - Roofe (Leeds)
Peterborough - Edwards (Hull)
Rochdale - Holt (Hibs)
Walsall - Forde (Rotherham), Demetriou (Southend), Sawyers (Brentford)

We are only the richest club in this league if you chose to use that wealth. We are not.

So as it stands, we are with all intent and purposes skint. You must be able to see that with the players coming in.

I am not saying its shite or stropping around, but i am realistic on the position we are in.

What the hell's going on with Bury? Literally in crisis one day to signing established players on decent wages the next. Maybe they don't need to sell Clarke anywhere near as much as we thought?

It's the same with Charlton, one minute they can't afford to sign a couple of trialists, the next they're linked to a couple of really decent players
