How do we rate our clubs team spirit this season?

I've been watching a video of Wales euros conquests, and the team spirit they had was incredible
and as a result the performances were also.

also I saw the documentary Shearer did about euro 96 and the team spirit they had there, even
going out on the lash near the tournament was described by El Tel as being vital to the team.

Do the Blades and Wilder in particular need to focus more attention on this to be successful this season?

We are a well established league 1 club with a number of average players . What's required is good disciplined work ethic instilled into the players by Wilder. Team spirit comes hand in hand with winning .

Wilder just needs to focus on each individual's roles and responsibilities . Then collectively we should start to win a lot more than we lose or draw.

Sounds simple , just that everybody else managing at the lane has failed .

I don't know how I'm supposed to guess at what it'll be like based on the current squad other than that it's something that Wilder no doubt values and he's said he wants players with the right attitudes.

What you need is players that have a strong desire to win and understand the importance of being a part of a team. But there are blends and there are types of personality that complement each other. We all knew that one kid on the playground who never passed it. You can't have many of them, but you can have a team that plays to the strengths of one or two flair players.You need players who aren't afraid to bark orders, but you can't have too many strong opinions clashing and not following each other. You need players who can get fired up without going full Tony McMahon and spending the game trying to pick a fight.

I think it's something that we'll have to judge when we've seen the squad handle the full spectrum of football challenges. You knew the spirit of Warnock's United when you'd seen them run themselves into the ground for a late winner, you'd seen them shut the game down and hold narrow leads, you'd seen them fight back from 2-0 down. We only knew that Warnock's promotion side could handle anything because we'd seen them handle everything.

There was a famous experiment where professional rowers curled a bar until they couldn't do another rep. They then repeated the task in pairs, both lifting the bar as a team. Every single pair managed more reps than their individual scores added together, thus proving teamwork over individual effort.

Great football teams are 'more than the sum of their individual parts'. So yes Wilder will be trying to foster team spirit.

However, don't forget that this is exactly the same principle that kept Hammond in the line-up week after week. Individually he was shit but Adkins believed that he made the 'team' better.

But it's not the full story, and you do also see players and teams that can be upset, that won't react well when things are going against them, and you need players who can handle pressure like that. One in particular that worries me in our current team is Long. He's a big frame and yet you still see him come half-heartedly for the ball in a crowded box. I suspect if you could inject a bit of killer instinct or Paddy Kenny style slight madness into him you'd see him as a much more commanding keeper.

It's the ones who can hold their nerve during break points that win, even if their opponent is technically as good. In fact, with the odd exception, there's not much to chose between the top fifty players in terms of ability, it's mainly down to what happens in their heads.

I know its a totally different level but me and my pal built a junior team at Todwck/kiveton from a hopeless set of 10 year olds who didn't win a game all season in dvision f to a team challenging for the title with Handsworth at 16 year old. They had all the academy nearlys and we just had a bunch of lads from Worksop and Dinnington. We were as good as them because the lads loved each other and would fight for one another because they had grown up together ,went away together and lived in each others pockets. Team spirit cannot be under estimated ,it is as important as talent and ability.

Exactly. And you can't get it out of a bottle. As you say, they had team spirit because they'd grown up together and were mates (and probably got confidence from you and your mate telling them how good they were, how to improve etc).
The Wales team is quite like that. A small group who've grown up together.
What's difficult for CW is creating that team spirit in a short space of time. I think the real question isn't 'do we need team spirit' but 'how does Wilder generate it?' What can he do to mould these players into a team?

I think in modern times, most managers are technically competent and what often sets them apart is their man management skills. How does a manager like Pep get a team of multimillionaires to work so hard, to work so well together off the ball? Yes it's partly great coaching and organisation but he also installs a collective will to win and to play for each other. It's that side of management that fascinates me.

Always makes me think of the Tyson quote, "Everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the mouth". You can't do it without the talent and the tactics, but like boxing you've got to do it when your opponent is putting the pressure on.
