Pope is available for free, but I'd wager he'll be hard to shift. He has 2 years remaining on a reportedly lucrative contract, which he will want compensating for should he move. And after a distinctly poor season I hardly think clubs will be lining for him.
So, more or less like us when we were begging Hull to take Quinny off our hands.
If they get rid they've still reduced their wage bill significantly which means they may be able to be more robust about Clarke but it doesn't look good for them.
Their board will be sat looking at the cash flow projection for the season and shitting themselves.

I don't think it was either of these. Its driving me mad now. Some manager or chairman definitely came out not so long ago ridiculing a bid we had put in. I recall Phipps coming out defending the club saying "you bid low first"

Is it John McGinn you're thinking of? A quick 'derisory Sheffield United' Twitter search throws his name up.

Did we bid for Bradley Dack last August?

Russell and Mackay-Steven are two I remember clearly though. Apparently we offered 10 grand for Mark Duffy in January 2013 as well.

What does it matter if we do bid low on players? Has no effect on anything. Wow, we get called 'comical' and it gets labelled 'derisory'.

Do you think that if we now offered the magic amount for Leon Clarke that Bury would turn around and say 'nah sorry, not after that first bid!'. No, they wouldn't, they will snap our hands off.

Pretty much. It's a risk, because he could well end up in a situation where nobody comes in for Pope due to his wage demands and mediocre performances, and he's left with a player he's publicly discarded as unwanted. I agree. I think he's trying to reduce the wage bill in order to be able to keep Clarke, or improve their negotiating power, as you say, who he no doubt sees as his one key player. I'm still confident that Clarke will go, they simply can't afford him.

Nothing wrong with starting the bidding lower. It's just that we seem to have put in a number of bids that suggest those at the club have no idea what the player is worth, which is piss poor, or that we don't even have any real intention of signing them at all - Johnny Russell's the best example of that, it was laughable.

And I'd say proving to other clubs that we're clueless does our reputation no favours whatsoever, and it's made us easy targets for agents in the past.

Within the last hour there's more twitter feeds about turning down a bid from us. but I'm guessing this is just in response to the Bury Times article this morning than a freash bid. Either way this persuit reminds me of Dan Burn! I really want us to sign Leon Clarke but if we can't then lets move on and sign someone more attainable rather than missing out on other targets. As a battering ram playing the Chief's role, Tom Pope would do a job.

John McGinn is the guy I was thinking of. I recall everyone watching him in the Scotland U21's thinking he was about to sign

McCabe has spent tens of millions on our club. Far, far more than he will ever recoup and infinitely more than all of us put together will ever do.

Do you think it's Monopoly money or some sort of computer game?
His feckin career choice

Leon fuckin' Clarke - £300,000

okay.

You don't reckon he's worth that Lydon? I'd say he is myself, as you know he's likely to get 20 goals plus in this league.

Personally, no.
Not even if we had £300,000 to spend on one player, I don't believe he's the man.
I don't know who is mind, but if Clarke signs (I say if, as I was "informed" a couple of months ago, he was nailed on!!) I think it would be for considerably less, known as an undisclosed fee.

I still think there's a CB coming our way, which may influence the amount Wilder has available, that and the selling off of one/two/three before the end of July.

His dad died, so that one is put to bed so to speak.

Shortly after that his mother and partner both suffered from some quite serious illness' (seperate) but are ok now I believe.

Sad news. His dad was a true legend of Trinidadian football. Didn’t know his mum had been ill though. Some sort of problem with her implants? Did it stop her promoting her books?

World of extremes with United.

£2.5m on a right back to £30k.

Has anybody responsible for negotiation got even the slightest clue about what they're doing?

I don’t think it was anywhere near £2.5million but I agree with the sentiment. We shoot our load about once a decade and if it goes badly austerity follows for a number of years and the decline goes on.

Do you really think we should pay over the odds for a 31 year old journeyman?

I think we should have signed him when he was out in the cold at Swindon but Charlton did instead.

Or when he was out in the cold at Charlton but Coventry did instead.

Or when we got our game-changing investment and desperately needed a striker but Wolves did instead and we loaned Billy fucking Paynter.

Or when Wolves released him but Bury did instead.

So many opportunities to pick him up for nowt whilst he still had plenty of good years left in him. Now we finally seem to notice his existence he is 31 and will command a fee.

Now, I’d maybe say negotiate up to a ceiling of around £200k. If it’s a no-go, move on.

can people stop saying paying 300k plus for Clarke is a good idea. I feel sick!

I'll keep saying it because its not about next season its about now and getting a realistic goalscorer, they don't come much better than Clarke at this level. I'd go up to £400,000 if it meant promotion, due to his goals. Wouldn't you?! Tell me another realistic goalscorer that will compliment Billy that is going to get 20 goals? I can think of a few out and out target men who will due a Chief role and come off the bench etc and ruffle a few feathers, hold the ball up and work hard, but no one who can score goals like Clarke can at this level. Just look at his record at Chesterfield, Southend, Coventry and now Bury. Yes he didn't do so well at Charlton or Swindon but I'll go on hios most recent years at Coventry and Bury.

They`ve not turned down £300,000.

The chairman would put on a chauffeur driven car for that price!

£100-150,000 should do it.

For five years or more (check the archives) I made it clear that I would pay for a stretch limo, complete with champers, cigars and dancing girls to take Montgomery to his new club. I think the only condition was that he took Kozluk with him. The offer had, of course, lapsed by the time he went to Australia...

I have wanted Clarke to come here for a few years, always a handful, always hanging around in dangerous positions, ready to pounce and break on goal, big and strong with pace and guile. If we need a battering ram to come on with 25 minutes to go, to run into defenders when they are tiring, cause problems and be running into the box and power through defenders, like skittles, to head in, Clarkey is probably the best option out there.

Scunthorpe away a few seasons ago, Clarke comes on, they get a corner, he runs in from outside the box and knocks everyone out of the way, heads in with ease. Last year at BDTBL, he was a real handful.
