I know we lacked leadership last season, but does anyone think having too many ex captains in the dressing room will lead to a clash of characters and in some way undermine Billy?

No you don't need 11 leaders, just 11 players who can do their job.

Appointing Sharp captain looked an emotional act, a bit of a P.R. move really.
Nothing to stop us having a captain in each area of the field though.
Must say again, I prefer the team captain to be in defence or midfield. Mind you I believe in real captains but what role can they have on the pitch when the manager and his team are right there on the touchline? It's as much about the dressing room and training ground as anything these days.

Nope, I think it's good. Mistakes don't get made from personalities clashing, they get made from lacking any character and expecting everything to be someone elses job. Like last seasons rabble.

It shouldn't in my opinion. You want leaders on the pitch. Last season Adkins clearly miscalculated that he could cultivate leadership through that leadership group (the lack of natural leaders at the club was something he identified last summer). We need leaders. We had a team overflowing with them in the season we were promoted to the Premier League.

I think Basham has demonstrated those qualities at times. He certainly looked more like captain material than McEveley ever did.

There will only be clashes if all the players with leadership qualities also have big egos. I trust Wilder's judgement that none of his signings will be arriving with an ego

Didn't we have a similar scenario with the signing of James Wallace (formerly Tranmere captain) and Andy Butler (formerly captain of Walsall). The solution to the problem is for one to be permanently injured and the other to fall out with the manager and never play.

Wouldn't call Long a leader. Can't speak for most of last season but he's been like a rabbit in headlights whenever i've watched him. I'll never forget a particular moment when it was passed back to him on his right foot. He panicked, missed the ball completely, and the ball trickled in behind him. I want to say that was against Yeovil but I'm not sure.Long ?

Not at all, the more leaders the better. Good leaders can think quickly under pressure, and make good decisions under pressure. Clive Woodward built his 2003 world cup winning squad on that premise.
If you look at when we went up in 2006 we had a lot of leaders - Morgan, Luketti, Unsworth, Jagielka, Monty, Shipperly, even Kenny in his own way.
The more the better.

Eleven guys need to gell during the game. One for all and all for one, as some twat said. I have just read Harry's book, about the crazy gang. A great read. They could fuck and fight off the field, pull each other apart but they sure worked as a disciplined unit when it mattered
One story is, that coming back from an away match, the bus stopped at a chippie and Wally Downs and another were sent for the fish and chips. When they were in the shop, Harry told the bus to drive on and the two were left to make their own way home with an armful of chips.
The next morning, Wally was in early spitting feathers offering to kill Harry Quick as a flash Harry blamed it on the younger players having a laugh. The door hit Wally on the arse as he ran from the office. Harry sat back; sure enough, the sounds of a pitched battle came from the dressing room and there were cuts and bruises galore. Harry laughed knowing that the bonding session had worked.

Wilder refuted the notion that giving Sharp the captaincy was a P.R.move during the meet the manage event at farm road club. He said he would never let sentiment or PR dictate decisions on players.He also said he wanted three more leaders, and only rated Basham and Sharp as leadership material out of last seasons players ("maybe Brayford").
Nope its fantastic I was watching the euro 96 documentary & they said the brilliant bit about the squad was the amount of leaders in thejpitch which helped when going went tough

You don't have to be a leader to have an ego that causes problems, and being leadership material doesn't mean you can't be a team player.
One thing we won't know too well is how much responsibility is given to the named captain. He's the man on the pitch, in the dressing room, but you still need defenders who help organise each other, midfielders ready to run the game, and keepers barking orders at set pieces. The captain's role isn't so big in that sense.
The one thing we know Billy has is the genuine determination to do his best for the club. He wouldn't be my first choice for captain, but if a player can't rally behind that then I doubt Wilder would sign them.

To be fair he was only about 18/19 with a handful of games under his belt then. He’s come on since then though I agree he’s not a captain. He’s learning to command his area better than he did but still has a fair way to go.

It shouldn't do because the very word captain implies that somebody is of strong nature to not only lead men but also take orders
