Agree on McNulty, I've always rated him. Thought Clough woefully mismanaged him playing him isolated in front of a midfield giving him no service due to a lack of creativity and ability. I'll just put this on record, if he's given the chance, he'll be top scorer next season (exact amount dependent on the level of quality the side Wilder brings in is), but I don't think Wilder will give him it.

You covered almost all bases there though so you can't be proved wrong, if he doesn't make an impact you could claim its for any of those reasons really, even if it may be down to him not been good enough.

No I haven't. If he's given a fair crack of the whip and he doesn't produce, I'll be wrong.

But then you could claim looking at your original post that it's down to the quality playing around him.

Normally it's fairly obvious and unanimous as to the level of quality we bring in.

Looking at Weir, Clough and Adkins for clear recent examples.

And even with those hindrances he managed a good, solid goalscoring (top goalscorer) record for a player of his age. I'll just put this on record, if he's given the chance, he'll be top scorer next season (exact amount dependent on the level of quality the side Wilder brings in is), but I think it's clear that Wilder isn't going to give him it.

Clough signed him of course and should take credit/ criticism!! for that!!

I just don't think that McNulty was a 'Clough sort of bloke' and in a way he just might be a 'Wilder sort of bloke', just a hunch, nothing more.

In a 'confident, express yourself, say whatever it takes' sort of environment McNulty might do well. He looks and acts beligerent to me and I personally like that.

I'm rather amused when people say how well he did at Portsmouth. 10 in 27 games at League two level for someone whose only contribution to the team effort is goals doesn't have me salivating...20 and I'd forgive his third-rate first touch and laziness. 10? No, not enough.

No me neither, he managed to blame the poor sod for just about everything, when he was the one recruiting the utter dross playing around him. Then he whose name cannot be said came in and didn't even give him a sniff.

Which of our central defenders would you play up front?

Not Basham, he is not assertive enough. I'd say McFadzean and the next one!!!

I would have said Kennedy every day of every week, I loved to watch him play.

Whoever we eventually sign can compete for the privelege. I have a lasting memory of watching the hated, obscene Jack Charlton pushed up front for the old Leeds with great effect. All you need is distraction.

I am not sure I except the "quality of service" argument when it comes to strikers, last season Billy Sharp, a dictionary definition of "out and out goal scorer" managed to score twenty goals in this league with a pile of shite playing around him.

If Macnulty plays more or less a full season as centre forward in this league I would want at least 15 plus goals out of him whoever he's playing with.

Shame really as I don't think he'll get the chance to prove himself either way.

Pinchy. How old are you? Give me a list of players you and I could ever count on to put away one-to-one goalscoring opportunities once they arise.

I've not got the time to even think about it, though I must say it is a big question.

McNulty is one of the calmest I've ever seen in a one-to-one situation. Rare quality, worth a very close examination by Wilder. It's all about playing to his strengths and compensating for his weaknesses . That's what Wilder has to do.

If I was Wilder I'd make it work for McNulty and challenge him to displace Sharp. Honestly, I don't ever see them playing together. If Wilder achieves that in a 3-5-2 I couldn't be more delighted. I don't much like big, lumbering strikers personally.

Za. all you and I have seen from McNulty is in a peevish, egotistical environment under Clough and Garner. Scots do not respond to that sort and nor do Yorkshiremen actually. McNulty could look a different man this season, he looked pained under Clough. Who knows?

Well we may see.

I think "who knows" is an accurate motto for our club this summer.

Who's asking for a big 'lumbering' striker Woody? Certainly not I, as you might imagine. "Tall and mobile" is how I usually put it. Oh, and a better first touch and greater desire than McNulty. The latter two requirements are not too onerous.

Hmmm? This is what Jack Charlton said about Revie playing him up front in 1961. It looks like he didnt play again up front after we won 2-1 at Elland Road in 1961

"The first year with Revie was an interesting one. The day after he took over, he moved me up to centre forward. I tried my best, but the No 9 shirt didn't feel right to me. I didn't know what to do, and nobody showed me. I remember Joe Shaw of Sheffield United laughing at me, I was making such a mess of it. After I protested Don switched me back to centre half."

Love it Pinchy. who would you have in mind?

Giroud or Carroll would be OK mate. Honestly, I really don't know. Then again I'm not paid to find them. There must be one or two gems? That Akinde seems a rough diamond worth taking a chance?...

There lies the rub.. As ever the strength of the club is in recruitment. Given the role and a budget for a scouting team, I could do it and I'm sure you could.

I think the match you talk about Silent was the year we got promotion
beat Leeds 2-1 at Elland Rd,Let Allchurch got the winner at the end I was stood,he scored some remarkable goals did Let in the run in
to promotion.I would say without his goals we would have failed that season, another master stroke John Harris pulled off that season.
He did the same 10 years later signing Hockey and Hope in the new year when our promotion push was showing signs of failing Hoping Wilder has the same ability to bring players In at the right time.
As for a tall gargling striker! why not
sometimes when things arnt working
it's always handy to have something
different up your sleeve.

At this less than rarified level Jamie Murphy took the mickey out of keepers in 1v1 situations a few times.

Yes, it was Don Revie's first home match as L**ds manager, Len Allchurch's debut. My parents got married that day too!

I was at that game too, stood on the the front row of the terrace. It was the week before the semi-final v Leicester at the same ground and I was on the terrace for that game too.Allchurch was cup-tied for the semi. Leeds were a small club in those days in a rugby city, much like these days in fact!

As for centre halves playing up front, anybody remember the spell that Charlie Bell had as centre forward; big, gangling Charlie Bell, did OK actually.

What about D Finningham who scored an hat full of goals for the reserves, but couldn't cut it in the first team

Joe Shaw could handle anybody.

Do you mean Dennis Finnigan? He was a defender. Jack ? Parks scored a lot in the Central League but I can't remember him playing for the first team.

Maybe we need a big lad to go up front in the last 15 minutes for Plan B; having said that, why not play a central defender up there if need be?

Still think we need raw pace over height ( all over the pitch).
Fine in theory but we still haven't got a central defender for the centre of defence, never mind one to throw up top.

Finnigan played quite a lot of reserves games playing up front and scoring goals but didn't play up front for the 1st team. My dad didn't rate him.

I think Jack Parks played in two first team games in the 1963-64 season. In 1965 he moved to a lower division club (think it was Scunthorpe?)
