So, we're going with Long as our only senior keeper and there's no short-term loan market from next season.

Whilst I'm happy to start with George, if he has a bad run like he's done in the past, we could be screwed with only youth players as cover.

Bit of a gamble if you ask me (I know you didn't). Seems a rather unnecessary one as well.

I'd like to see us sign an experienced keeper, but only after we've sorted every other position.

We should have retracted the offer as soon as he showed a reluctance to sign. With his ability as bang average league one standard as it is, that should have been enough to know that he isn't fully committed to the cause and that he thought he is much better than he is. If he was actually up to a better standard he'd have deserved all the time we spent pandering to him, as it was he definitely didn't. Wilder even said himself he only wants players here who want to be, so I'm not sure why he went against his own words.

We could have then added a much more experienced keeper with Ramsdale as back up. Even now Long's here for another season, I'd still want a new goalkeeper to be brought in as it's such an important position. That'd be less than ideal though as Long would then have to go no.2 and it'd force Ramsdale to be pushed out for another season. Still better than scraping through with what we have and costing ourselves a lot of points though, which is what we'll end up doing.

But if we bring in another keeper, it is still the same. One senior keeper backed up by Ramsdale.

We could've gambled that for whatever we are paying Long we might get a better keeper...but I'm prepared to say I reckon we would have been looking a long time to find one.

We have many more issues that need addressing above Long as first choice keeper. He's more than adequate...where as we start pre season without a centre back FFS

The changes to the loan system leaves us with a problem though. If George is out for a long period with an injury, we're reliant on Ramsdale (is Willis still at the club?)

Was George reluctant to sign or just trying to negotiate terms both he and the club were comfortable with?

As much as I'd like to see a more experienced keeper coming in, I do think George gets more flack on here than he warrants... but appreciate I'm probably in the minority.

I think CW is in for a back up keeper. Long is his no1 whose just signed a reduced contract, he ain't gonna wanna demoralise the lad is he

He's said today he isn't

For the 100th time, if we'd retracted the offer and he decided to leave we get sod all compensation. The offer had to be there, him refuse and then sign for someone else for us to get what is due.

I'd have offered the contract for the chance of compensation, but if I was manager and he didn't sign it and wanted to piss me about for ages I'd tell him to shove his compensation up his arse.

Aye, the £100k the club would have got disappears in pique of manager petulance. Another one sacked!

Yes, I'd rather focus on sticking to the plan of recruiting for promotion and not letting it be de railed by people like Long messing about over his contract.

Plus, we poured £1.7m - £2m down the drain for christ sake.

Not the point. The manager costing the club or business that amount due to a hissy fit screaming 'I'm in charge' would be gone. There's years of academy training costs flushed down the pan.

If we had let Long go and focused our efforts on finding a replacement like we did with Maguire and Murphy we'd be relegated with a record goals against total having played a kid in net all season. We're fucking useless at signing players

Personally think we're pretty good at signing players. Signing good ones is where we're useless.

Gonna' take a hell of a lot more than that to claw your way back from the other day. :)

Says who, you and the boy wonder?

You're still clawing your way back from the " I've been banned" breakdown.

See your understanding of player contracts hasn't improved either, but if Barney says he's "won" it's a small victory in a long long line of embarrassing defeats. I'll cut you some slack to make you feel better, for this morning at least.

What were the sticking points in the contract negotiations between Long and the Club?

If CW did that you would start at least 4 threads on here admittedly with slightly different wording lambasting the club for doing it and get a swipe in about it on every thread available. Oh and it's not his compensation is it??

You tell me. He was offered a contract and for whatever reason he chose to delay his signature.

Thinking out of the box here but maybe they were negotiating the original terms, maybe someone went on holiday?

"You tell me" = I have no idea but I won't let that stop me!

Like I say, I'd have offered him new terms, but based on his ability he'd have been given minimal time to sign it, as the club shouldn't have cared all that much. With him dithering, it was a choice between no compensation and George Long, or no compensation and go out and find a better keeper instead, on a free transfer. Latter is obviously more appealing.

So just to clarify you would have done the opposite to what the club has done, now that is a surprise, crack on
