The Long and the short of it

What were the sticking points in the contract negotiations between Long and the Club?

You tell me. He was offered a contract and for whatever reason he chose to delay his signature.

His original contract offer was made by Adkins et al and when Wilder took over the contract was amended. Having had his representatives check over the original contract and negotiate a few points, they had to repeat the whole process again with the new, revised contract.

So just to clarify you would have done the opposite to what the club has done, now that is a surprise, crack on

You have to remember this is the poster who claimed - repeatedly throughout a thread - that it was easy to get rid of players simply by cancelling their contract. When pointed out that the balance of the wages payable would be due, his expert opinion was that there would be nothing due as the contract had been cancelled, then there wasn't a contract and therefore nothing to pay.

Oh how we laughed.

Not entirely true now is it.

Getting sweeter, keep 'em coming.

Didn't post then but been an avid reader for years I was pissing myself on that thread and he just couldn't let go of the shovel:D:D

Wilder even said himself he only wants players here who want to be, so I'm not sure why he went against his own words.

No real indication Wilder's done that – the fact he's chosen to sign early into pre-season before most clubs sort their business out rather than wait out and see what other offers came forward is as clear an indication you need that he wants to be here.

I'd have offered the contract for the chance of compensation, but if I was manager and he didn't sign it and wanted to piss me about for ages I'd tell him to shove his compensation up his arse.

For "piss about for ages" it was, what, a couple of weeks? At a time most players weren't even about?

Wilder's quite adamant that Long isn't going to be guaranteed a start and that he'll have to maintain high standards – otherwise, we have a couple of promising keepers ready to seize any chance offered to them. I think on that point, and given the need to focus recruitment on more important areas, Wilder's done fine on this one. Far more concerned about the other areas we need to recruit in.

That's my point - you say we should just bin off people who don't sign offered contracts straightaway yet you have no idea what causes any delay.

It could be anything, including obscure but important things like pension contributions for example.
