I would've preferred the compensation but at least we could have an incredibly Bladey spine with him, McFadzean and Sharp.

Does anyone know what's happened to George Willis? Looks as if he's gone and the club site refers to Long, Ramsdale and Eastwood. I haven't seen anywhere that he has officially left the club.

So he was initially offered more then it was reduced?

No wonder the kid's pissed off.

Set prices? Really? I thought each case was judged on it’s own merits by tribunal if necessary (though more often than not the clubs agree a settlement). Thought factors such as age, how long they’ve been with the club, number of appearances and even international honours were all taken into account.

Set prices probably wasn't the right term but there's a general ballpark figure I think

Well he's signed so let's hope he now actually improves to the extent that people claim he has....I suspect he'll be a worldbeater by August.

Chris Wilder's squad for the 2016-17 campaign has received a further boost, with goalkeeper George Long agreeing to commit his future to United.

The 22-year-old has agreed a new two-year deal and the stopper has confirmed he will officially put pen-to-paper when he returns from holiday.

The Academy graduate made 38 starts in all competitions last season and was an ever present in the starting XI after having regained the number one jersey from the recently-released Mark Howard in November.

Long's extended stay boosts United's goalkeeping department, with young professionals Aaron Ramsdale and Jake Eastwood also contracted for the foreseeable future.

Sheffield born-and-bred Long progressed through the Blades Academy, starring in the run to the FA Youth Cup final in 2011 and has now chalked up 118 senior appearances.
I'm confused. The article says we have received a boost but then goes on to say Long has signed a new contract.....

Is Long good enough . We may well find out next season . If he comes up trumps he has to be nominated for the league 1 team of the year . He has to set the benchmark bar high for himself next season , nothing less will do.

Still don't rate him , but a steady reliable back for will either help him or make him look what he is - average

Everyone's suggesting Smith without even seeing him play. Northampton fans even admit he's got a howler in him, and from the video which is admittedly all I've seen he looks no better than George. It's just because he's a 'new name'.

Instead, lets back Long and get behind him. Wilder has said he's not first choice automatically so he's going to be signing someone else.

This is a good thing. No doubt about it.

It's about time one our lazy fuckers had my name on his shirt - fame at last?

Absolutely despise the way he's acted recently.

Clearly doesn't want to play for the Blades but came running back when there wasn't anything else out there for him.

And he isn't even a very good keeper!

Absolute joke from start to finish.

In the real world players and their agents play the negotiation game and although it takes a bit more time, the right outcome is achieved a lot more than if every player said " Oh thank you very much sir, good of you sir" and snap their master's hand off. They just test the resolve. Wilder reckons he has that resolve, good on him if he has anything to do with it so soon !!!

Come on Barney. It's how it is, good keeper, poor keeper or not, word is he has accepted a pay deduction, not many do that without some sort of protest.

Let me be clear, I'd have offered him a contract, but I'd have wanted it signing there and then, with little to no hesitation. If he wants to play for the Blades he shouldn't have had to think twice.

Wilder banged on about making sure players were at the Lane only if they want to be.

To me, George Long has clearly shown us all that he doesn't, and yet he's still been allowed to sign.

Wilder going against his own bloody rules already.

Long was offered a contract some time ago. Wilder has been here a couple of weeks and Long was on holiday for most of that, in fact he has accepted the contract while he is still away. Sharp work, sharp reaction, job done.

Agree to disagree.

The lads gone on holiday came back had a meeting with CW. CW said make up your mind if your staying or going and he's decided to stay.

Don't see what the fuss is about in terms of his contract situation.

The question of whether or not he is good enough will be resolve this year.

Hilarious how people have made their minds up based on sheer speculation and hearsay.

No one knows what the delay was, it seems the popular view is that he was holding out for a better offer from United or another club.

It could very equally, and probably more likely, to have been because he hasn't been given assurances that he is Wilder's number one keeper and therefore wasn't sure whether to sign or look for a club where is is number one.

The bashing of Long is embarrassing IMO. Hes a young 'keeper who is still developing. He's made some crucial contributions in the last 5 years as well as some mistakes. A lot of people just want to focus on the negatives and forget the penalty saves and the match winning saves that he has made.

I'm glad he's signed a new deal, and look forward to seeing him develop further this coming season.

Dont think the way Long has dithered over his contract offer will have impressed CW. I'm sure from what CW says about wanting players who are desperate to play for the club and not just desperate to get another £500 at any club, that Long will not have gained his respect by the way he has conducted himself, by constantly requesting extra time, before giving his decision.
I for one cant understand why its taken so long to sort. Yes, it was a difficult decision for Long. Should he take the extra money on offer and become a third choice keeper at Boro, West Brom or another higher placed team, or risk being second choice keeper at the Blades, on a lower wage. Finally he's done the sensible thing for his career and gambled that his own talent will see him emerge as first choice at the Blades, instead of settling for probably never starting next season at one of the clubs mentioned.
I personally believe we should have given him a deadline and then kept to it, instead we have allowed Long to dictate matters, as he has dragged out matters, while his agent attempted to obtain an increased offer from another club. When this appears to have not happened, he's taken up our offer. This has not raised his stock with me at all. There are plenty of keepers out there that would have jumped at the chance to play at the Lane. Long is not that good that he should have been allowed to dictate matters. He could so easily have been replaced with someone at least as good. We should have said sign by a certain date or we will be signing another keeper, instead we have appeared weak and this sends out the wrong message to other players and agents, that we may have to negotiate contrats with in the coming weeks.

No wifi in Mablethorpe.

Negotiations carried out on corner of Jubilee Terrace and Paradise View public telephone box.

Golden Palms Holiday Camp. Nothing but the best, eh......
