Surprised anyone is other than pleased by this...

Any self respecting pro is going to have to think hard when there are offers from the prem around and speculation about a new manager bringing his own keeper in.

Think George is a top keeper in the making. He's shown his mental toughness coming back from being dropped as well.

And for all the clamour around smith his highlights vids show he's not especially strong on crosses either.

Glad he's signed up.

Well he's signed so let's hope he now actually improves to the extent that people claim he has....I suspect he'll be a worldbeater by August.

He’s gone from miles away on the opening day to looking reasonably assured over the 2nd half of the season. If he can continue to improve, he could at least be a very good League 1 keeper by the end of the season. Never any guarantees with kids though and I think even less so with young GKs. Remember Steve Simmonsen as a youngster being tipped to be England’s number 1.

Absolutely despise the way he's acted recently.

Clearly doesn't want to play for the Blades but came running back when there wasn't anything else out there for him.

And he isn't even a very good keeper!

Absolute joke from start to finish.

Absolutely despise someone trying to get the best deal? Really? Absolutely despise?

OK, he might have shown he’s no Dane Whitehouse but the majority of people would try to negotiate to get the best deal. The great Alan Kelly was out of the team for a while over a contractual dispute and still preserved his legend status.

Let me be clear, I'd have offered him a contract, but I'd have wanted it signing there and then, with little to no hesitation. If he wants to play for the Blades he shouldn't have had to think twice.

Wilder banged on about making sure players were at the Lane only if they want to be.

To me, George Long has clearly shown us all that he doesn't, and yet he's still been allowed to sign.

Wilder going against his own bloody rules already.

This seems a sudden change from “no wonder the kid’s pissed off”.

Feel sorry for Long as he suffered from being put into the team possibly too early then having the absolute cluster fuck of Collins in front of him for a long period which destroyed his confidence. I think we've got a good keeper on our hands and if we can get the defence sorted he'll get better and better. Pity it's only a two year contract as I think that may bite us on the arse.

Everyone's suggesting Smith without even seeing him play. Northampton fans even admit he's got a howler in him, and from the video which is admittedly all I've seen he looks no better than George. It's just because he's a 'new name'.

Instead, lets back Long and get behind him. Wilder has said he's not first choice automatically so he's going to be signing someone else.

This is a good thing. No doubt about it.

It's the old problem, anything new is better than the shit we have. Memory serves me the "shit we have" is actually alright, what we need is something that pushes Long to be better rather than him just sitting there as number 1 by osmosis. 2 good keepers battling for one shirt is a good thing. Long is a decent keeper, lets get another decent keeper in and let the games begin.

Totally agree. Not gonna sit here and say Long is a world beater, he is decent, getting better but needs pushing. An experienced head would do that and there's plenty of them floating around on a free.

There is also the fact missed by others that he has had his initial deal changed since Wilder came in. So is anyone surprised that he delayed to consider his options? We moved the goalposts and I think him and his agent did the right thing.

My stance leant towards "if he doesn't like the offer then tough" but if as you say the goalposts were moved by us, then that does cast things in a different light. At the time I wrote the things I wrote I wasn't aware of that.

What is to despise about taking a bit of time to consider ones options given we have no idea about the terms, the conversations that were had, other offers on the table etc. ?

fact? Or rumour?

Am I to now believe that no one actually knows the full details of contracts, wages, add ons, sponsorship details, charity patronages, where they live, who they live with, where they shop.....

And I thought I was out of my depth.

So we offer a deal, before he goes on holiday, he comes back and we've changed some of the terms, and instead of signing it immediately he takes a few days to go through it and decide. What a Cunt! Oh and he's shit too.

All this is immaterial to me. He is entitled to take his time and United are entitled to offer what they think right. Personally I wouldn't have made him an offer at all and would have much preferred him to move on.

Time will tell, but I don't see him, by August, becoming a confident and commanding keeper with great communication skills; dominating his area; catching routine crosses; stopping shots without knocking the ball back into a dangerous area; dealing reliably with long range shots that ought to be saved and knowing where his near post is....

Better get cracking young George...
