Set prices? Really? I thought each case was judged on it’s own merits by tribunal if necessary (though more often than not the clubs agree a settlement). Thought factors such as age, how long they’ve been with the club, number of appearances and even international honours were all taken into account.

If that’s true, even the reduced offer has to be more than his last contract suggesting the original was so good he should have snatched our hand off when it was on the table. If he didn’t, he has nobody to blame but himself. Legally, if the club made him an offer he would have had chance to accept it before the club withdrew it and made a reduced one.

In Long's situation he will know Wilder has a view on him, if not first hand then through his Blades contacts. He's nowhere near as yet, but he's young.

Would you start a promotion season with Long in goal? 50/50 perhaps. Nobody, not even Long is totally sure, but he needs to improve this side of Xmas. That's why he's offered less on his wages.

Such as Adams will be taking nothing for granted on their next contracts, that's for sure, not without a big contribution now, not just on potential, if it's there at all.

Well, we came within a whisker of promotion with Steve Simmonsen in goal and I’m confident in saying Long is better than him.

Dictated to? Yes. Hes had the offer of a contract since before the end of the season. Hes now stalled signing on 2 occasions. He has chosen to look elsewere as hes entitled to do so. So for me. Thats sufc being dictated to by long and his agent.

I suppose the ideal way for SUFC to handle this in my opinion would be


Offer him a contract telling him he has every chance of being number 1 but it’s down to him to prove he deserves to keep the shirt.


Now he’s stalled tell him that if he doesn’t sign by x date, the offer is withdrawn and a new offer of (insert sum £1 per week better than his old contract) will be made, we will be shopping for a new number one and if he signs it, he will be back up or possibly loaned out again.


Protects our position re compensation whilst letting the player know we won’t be dicked around.

He’s got to be worth more than that. He’s proven himself a capable League 1 keeper at 22. He’s racked up much more experience than most his age. He’s a good shot-stopper. Big and agile. He has areas to work on but there’s certainly potential there. I’d guesstimate he’s currently worth somewhere between £500-750k largely because he has the potential to become a multi-million pound player (there’s every chance he won’t though).

I think there is more to it than meets the eye regarding the Kierans. Most see them as having potential and being at least good enough to be squad players. The fact that both are quite versatile would also work in their favour.

There’s been plenty of questions raised about Freeman’s attitude and I suspect that’s the reason he’s on his way out.


As for Wallace, it was only after he’d been out of the team a while that Adkins mentioned his injury (a little like Clough with the mysterious calf strain of Neil Collins). Was the injury the reason he was nowhere near the team during the 2nd half of the season? Adkins said he hoped he’d be back by Easter but he didn’t feature again. Perhaps he’s also conducted himself in a way that has finished his blades career?


On footballing ability alone I would keep both but I suspect that’s not the reason they are outward bound.

I don’t think he was initially brought in as number 1. I think he was signed to cover for Tracey when he was injured but his Wembley heroics against the pigs made it damn near impossible for Tracey to get the shirt back for quite a while.


Kelly was dropped for a while over a contract dispute and Tracey got the shirt back for a while (though Kelly’s version of events is a little different). Kelly was broadly speaking the number 1 but had fierce competition and at worst excellent cover in Tracey.

Bentley had a very good season in 2014-15 as Southend got promoted and attracted interest from higher placed clubs (was being linked with Prem moves I think). Has made one or two howlers this just gone season but still has a decent reputation. He’s a big lad as well.


If Long goes to Scotland, doesn’t that lose or reduce the compensation we’d be entitled to?

He had a blinder against Rangers in the playoffs for Motherwell…..

The rules keep changing but it was certainly the case that compensation was greatly reduced if a player went 'abroad' which included Scotland. I recall another player threatening to go to Scotland during a contract dispute but I can't remember who now.

George should have been tied up six months ago but our dithering attempts to cover all eventualities has bitten us on the arse again.

Two great keepers in their own ways but I have to say I preferred Tracey myself ........ I always thought that Kelly was a bit susceptible to conceding too many from long range shots .... possibly why his international career stalled ?

I saw more outstanding saves and performances from Kelly and was just getting into football around the time he put in that world class performance v the pigs. I remember him being constantly linked with Rangers and Newcastle and at one time even Barcelona!!

Always liked Tracey but Kelly was something of an idol for me growing up. Incredible keeper.

I remember Tom Ince being linked with Inter at one point meaning Blackpool would have got next to nothing for him.


To be honest, given that loophole, you’d think loads of Serie B, Ligue 2 etc. teams would be looking at young players at the end of their contracts in England. People like Bentley and Payne in Southend, Sawyers at Wallsall etc. Probably better young players out of contract in the championship too.


I’m surprised foreign teams don’t tap into that market more. Maybe it’s because of the wage demands of English players compared to others around the continent.

That and English players tend to be like Wards; don't travel well.
 
Seems he's going to sign and that's got to be good, especially if it's on reduced terms as suggested.

Long has a bit to do in pre-season. He might find Wilder a tough manager but I sense Long is an 'arm around the shoulder' sort of lad. Calvert-Lewin said he got big bollockings from Wilder at Northampton and made sure he responded. Could all toughen Long up no end.

I'd have much preferred for him to leave, us receive some sort of compensation, reinvest it in a CB and Ramsdale act as cover for a new GK (Smith)

Long's wages are in our budget and he might well be on more than the Northampton lad might have signed for.
 
This is pure Bladey-Bladeness, but George is the last link with the 2011 FA Youth Cup finalists (Callum McFadzean was the other). Not a reason to keep him, but I like it all the same. The actual reason to keep him is that he improved enough last season to earn his place in the squad, not necessarily as the No 1 but we will see what CW thinks about that.

Chris Wilder's squad for the 2016-17 campaign has received a further boost, with goalkeeper George Long agreeing to commit his future to United.

The 22-year-old has agreed a new two-year deal and the stopper has confirmed he will officially put pen-to-paper when he returns from holiday.

The Academy graduate made 38 starts in all competitions last season and was an ever present in the starting XI after having regained the number one jersey from the recently-released Mark Howard in November.

Long's extended stay boosts United's goalkeeping department, with young professionals Aaron Ramsdale and Jake Eastwood also contracted for the foreseeable future.

Sheffield born-and-bred Long progressed through the Blades Academy, starring in the run to the FA Youth Cup final in 2011 and has now chalked up 118 senior appearances.
